TRIVANDRUM: Close on the heels of BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Limited (BATL)'s plan to increase its annual turnover by Rs 50 crore, Union defence secretary G Mohan Kumar has assured BATL of all support towards increased participation in defence-related manufacturing with foreign vendors.

With ISRO's plan to increase its number of space launches from 12 to 18 this year, BATL being the Tier 1 supplier expects production orders worth Rs 300 crore.

In his latest visit to BATL here on Saturday, Union defence secretary G Mohan Kumar, IAS, has examined the contract orders received by BATL and assured of all possible central support to increase its participation in defence related manufacturing with foreign tie-ups. Now, foreign vendors are looking for reliable Indian manufacturers and BATL has the potential, he said.

BATL managing director Vice Admiral Raman Prabhath AVSM, VSM (retired, told TOI that the Union defence secretary G Mohan Kumar had made a normal visit to examine BATL's contracts and to assess its potential to increase its defence manufacturing.

Apart from BATL's manufacturing of space engineering components and products such as the biggest Air Borne Launcher (ABL) and other products related to BrahMos missile, Launch vehicles for ISRO and equipment for the Department of Atomic Energy and DRDO, various manufacturing opportunities related to the defence offsets are currently under negotiations, he said.

"With the central government opening up the defence sector with 100 percent foreign direct investment, defence manufacturing will surge. With that, BATL expects more defence manufacturing orders from foreign companies. Though the workers at BATL are highly skilled, the state support is crucial in giving them the required direction," Prabhath said.

"Now, the turnover at BATL has crossed Rs 44 crore and we are targeting over Rs 50 crore by the end of this year. From being a loss-making PSU, BATL is on a profit-making spree, it has made Rs 60 lakh profit last year and hopes to make over Rs 1 crore profit by this year," he said.

BATL General Manager Commander Vinod Sankar (Rtd) told TOI that "ISRO's plan to increase the number of launches including PSLV and GSLV would translate to more production orders for BATL as the Tier 1 supplier of products including Vikas engine. BATL is also developing the Advanced Cryogenic engine here". A sizeable quantity of production order is from ISRO with fringe orders from BARC, DRDO and others, he said.

Current order for BATL from DRDO arm is from Bangalore based Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) for production of aerospace engines which is a development project with an initial worth of Rs 10 crore, which on development later can fetch huge contracts. In space and defence products contract, BATL has about Rs 170 crore pending orders by March end and the production order is expected to increase by Rs 300 crore soon, the official said.

BATL officials gave an overview of the company status, its future marketing and sales plans to the union defence secretary. After visiting various production facilities inside the BATL factory, the Union defence secretary appreciated the efforts of BATL staff and advised them to visit defence labs across the country to obtain more production orders.

They should make it a JSC.

Seriously, BATL would get a lot of investors.

Especially since we are planning to export them abroad.
