The investigation revealed that although Barisal is a riverine area, boats were not built here. Boats were made and brought from Khulna, Dhaka, Narayanganj, Chittagong or Mongla. Goods or fuel ships were also built in Dhaka and Khulna. In 1964, a dockyard was built on a small scale in the Nayani area of Charkaua Union of Sadar Upazila next to Saheb's Hatkhal by the prominent launch businessman and former municipal chairman late Golam Mawla.

Barisal's foray into boat building began with the construction of four wooden launches there. The dockyard has seen great success in the construction of small launches and boats for three consecutive decades. After that, he built Surabhi Shipyard on a larger scale in the Beltala area of the city on the west bank of the Kirtankhola river. The first ship with modern facilities built there for one and a half years was able to float in the water in 2000. The fast launch named MV Surbhi-4 was widely appreciated by passengers on the Dhaka-Barisal route.

Golam Mawla's eldest son Surbhi Group of Companies Managing Director Riaz Ul Kabir told Ittefaq that all the company's passenger, goods and fuel transport ships were built in its own shipyard.

Saidur Rahman Rintu, President of the Barisal Chamber of Commerce and Vice President of the Launch Owners Association, has built Sundarban Shipyard on the banks of the Kirtankhola river next to Surabhi. Owned state-of-the-art passenger launches MV Sunderban-7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 have been built in this shipyard on various routes in the southern region including Dhaka-Barisal.

Saidur Rahman Rintu told Ittefaq that along with the passenger launch, cargo coasters and oil tankers have been built here. Apart from this, several launches and cargo coasters, and oil tankers have been built under contract at Sundarban Shipyard.

He also said that it is possible to build world-class ships in the shipyard here. Kirtankhola Shipyard started its journey by building ships for Kirtankhola Company next to Surbhi and Sundarban Shipyards. MV Kirtankhola-Nos. 1, 2, and 10 launches have been built at this shipyard. Many boats have been built in the shipyard owned by Manjurul Ahsan Ferdous.

Manjurul Ahsan Ferdous said many skilled craftsmen have been produced in Barisal. It is possible to build world-class ships in their hands. Barisal Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce president Nizam Uddin built a shipyard named Adventure on the east bank when this huge day and night shipbuilding campaign brought success on the west bank of Kirtankhola.

Two water wedges named Adventure-4 and 5 and Adventure-6, 1 and luxury Adventure-9 have been built at his shipyard. M Khan Shipyard is located in the area adjacent to the former Dapadapiya ferry port. Besides, there is a dockyard for the construction of small cargo trawlers and coasters in the Chandmari area adjacent to KDC.

The Adventure series of launches are larger-than-average modern marine vessels, of the twin hull catamaran design, which is increasingly common in Bangladesh. They are mostly patronized by middle class folks going places where road networks are not common or are harder to reach using roadways.

Are these the types of launches being built in Barisal? The interior is quite nice - I'm very impressed.
