Barbaric Gujrat Massacre - The Truth Behind The Story

BBC News - India court jails 31 for life over 2002 Gujarat riots

A court in India has jailed 31 people for life for killing dozens of Muslims during religious riots in the western state of Gujarat nine years ago.

They were found guilty of murder, attempted murder, arson, rioting and criminal conspiracy after 33 people were burned alive in a building.

Another 42 mostly Hindu defendants were acquitted for lack of evidence.

More than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, died when riots erupted after a train fire killed 60 Hindu pilgrims in 2002.

It was one of India's worst outbreaks of religious violence in recent years.

Muslims were blamed for starting the train fire, and Hindu mobs eager for revenge went on the rampage through Muslim neighbourhoods in towns and villages across Gujarat in three days of violence following the incident.

Fierce debate

The special court dealing with the case sat near Sardarpura village, where the 33 Muslims sought shelter in a small house on the night of 28 February, 2002.

The victims had gathered there to get away from the rioters, who set the building alight. The bodies of 28 people were found at the scene, with five others dying later from their injuries.

Those convicted on Wednesday can appeal to a higher court.

The Gujarat government is led by Hindu nationalist Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who has been accused by rights groups - and a senior police officer in April - of tacitly supporting the rioters.

He denies the allegations but has never apologised for the riots.

Responsibility for the train fire has been the subject of fierce debate between Hindus and Muslims.

In February a special court in Gujarat found 31 people guilty of setting fire to the passenger train in the town of Godhra. It acquitted 63 other people of conspiracy and murder.

The mostly Hindu pilgrims on the train were returning from the town of Ayodhya, itself a flashpoint for communal unrest after a mosque was razed in 1992 by Hindu hardliners. That led to separate riots that also killed thousands of predominantly Muslim people.

An inquiry commission set up three years ago by the Gujarat state government into the 2002 riots said that the burning of the train had been a "conspiracy".

It examined more than 1,000 witnesses during a six-year period, found that 140 litres of petrol had been purchased as part of what it said had been a conspiracy to burn the train carriage.

That commission also exonerated Mr Modi over the riots that followed the blaze.

In 2005, however, a federal government inquiry took a different view, concluding that the train fire had been an accident - probably started by people cooking in one of the carriages - not the result of an attack (This inquiry commission was later struck down by a court order)

The Sardarpura killings case is one of nine singled out for special investigation by India's Supreme Court - in 2003 its judges castigated the Gujarat authorities for not delivering justice to victims.

If I ever could do something, I would put these pigs in a open field against Pathans and Singhs. Then ask them to show how big of man they are. It's an absolute shame and discusting how they consider them selves MAN and above all humans. This a absolute copy of 1984 in 2002.

Very true brother

He is going to elected PM in 2014.
He had no role at all in the riots as 3 times he has been aquitted by the SC.
Even congress workers took part in riots. Community backlash after Godhra train massacre.

What role does Sangh Parivar have to play in it?
It was a congress conspiracy to defame modi.

Anyways 70 people went to jail over it and a dozen were hanged so justice is served.

Remembering the Gujarat Riots

Hundreds of people who survived the deadly religious riots that swept India's state of Gujarat 10 years ago gathered in the city of Ahmedabad on Monday to mark the anniversary. In pictures.

The riots, which killed over 1000 people, mostly Muslims, was one of the worst episodes of communal violences in India's history.

Gujarat riots a result of fundamentalist ideology

Hindu fundamentalists have time and again used violence as a tool against Muslims and other minorities to demonstrate that India is a land of Hindus and the 2002 Gujarat riots which is one of the most violent of genocides in post colonial India exemplifies that ideology, said M. H. Jawahirullah, M. L. A., Ramanathapuram and president, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi.

Addressing a protest meeting held by ‘Joint Action Committee Against Religious Fanaticism' in condemnation of the Gujarat riots and demanding speedy justice, here in Madurai on Monday, Mr.Jawahirullah pointed out how all these commissions which were appointed by the Government in various cases of violence against minorities had failed to deliver justice .

He also condemned the way in which corporate capitalists and certain sections of media have been trying to construct a different reality that Gujarat as a State has made great progress under Modi's leadership. “It is a myth, Gujarat over the years has been among the prosperous states and this was due to its geographical location and the wealth of natural resources and even during the time when Congress ruled the state it was the same.”

While thanking the various human rights organisations, that stood by the minorities whenever they faced trouble, Mr. Jawahiruallah said that the protests will continue till justice is rendered.

Henri Tiphagne, executive director, People's Watch, in his address said that people who believe in human rights and rule of law would always stand by the victims of Gujarat riots till justice is rendered.

This protest remembers those innocent people who died as victims of “state sponsored terrorism.” He further said that not only justice has been delayed for so long but the victims were denied relief amount.

He also demanded that the Nanavati Commission should be scrapped.

Speaking earlier, Communist Party of India's Radhakrishnan, said that the State and police here in Tamil Nadu along with sections of media are setting a bad precedent by painting a rosy picture about the migrant labourers and North Indians as outsiders. The act to enumerate the migrant labourers and putting them under surveillance is highly condemnable as it questions the very basic foundations of a democratic state.

At the end of the protest meeting all the members held a candle light ceremony in memory of the innocent victims who were killed in the riots.

Mahaboob John, Marumalarchi Labour Front leader, John Moses, State president, Tamil Nadu Janata Dal (Secular), Parthasarathy, organizer, C.J.Rajan, coordinator, Joint Action Committee Against Religious Fanaticism and R.Thirunavukkarasu, Institute of Human Rights Education also spoke.

The Hindu : Cities / Madurai :

said M. H. Jawahirullah, M. L. A., Ramanathapuram and president, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi.

I don't trust him. " Manithaneya Makkal Katchi" is Muslim party, its communal party, the statement raised by it's member will be pro Muslims only.

So rejected..

Narendra Modi still needs to get sent to jail for life (personally I don't like the death penalty, as it lowers the time of suffering that the perpetrator has to endure).

Can you explain the crime he committed, something which has escaped the courts of law ?

Anyhoo haters gonna hate and the unreasonable, prejudiced hate towards Modi is only making him stronger..:azn:

We are from the land of Gandhi, that does not mean that we are impotents when you kill 56 of our pilgrims in a train bogee.

This is a famous quote from the Father of our nation [GANDHI] - It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of non-violence to cover impotence.

You talk about 1000 dead in the post Godhar riot, but you keep quite on what started the event, it was mislims that burnt people alive that triggered the riot. so if any of you what to blame some one for the carnege then blame the muslim brothers who ignited it.
10 years have passed, and there has been no such incidents till today in Gujarat and it will not happen again as the leason learnt will stay on. "Do not indulge in violance and trigger a massacre" will be there in the hearts of MUSLIMS AND HINDUS as long as it can.

modi for PM of india
I am not sure Modi can change the way this country as he has transformed Gujarat. it lies with the responsibility of each of the state government to make a bench mark on Modi's achievement and work for their own state.
From my own understanding there are no good leaders to each of our states exept MODI and NITISH KUMAR.
the rest are all busy looting peoples money and taking commisions for development activity initiated by private sectors.

10 years gone, many rioters are punished, many will be punish. we have 2 option

1. Let the court decide rest cases.
2. Keep itching the wound, so that it never heal .

Shivraj singh chouhan and raman sing too are doing good job. even navin Patnaik was good, But I don know what he is doing in odisha, he is been CM for 10+ years and Odisha is still poor state..

The problem with the Gujarat riots was, that policemen were seen directing the rioters on where to go, plus they had electoral lists given by civil servants, that showed muslim households to target.

Police were seen either idly standing by, or actively helping the orchestrated 'mobs' to target kill.

This official sanction, and indeed, official complicity in the Gujarat massacres, is what exposes the Bharti establishment generally, and the Gujarat govt. specifically as RSS infiltrated, Hindutva orientated, Sangh Parivar influenced, Saffron wearing, Trishul brandishing criminals that they are.

Without doubt, Bharat is an extremist HIndu State, masquerading as a secular, democratic republic.

Thank You.

10 years have passed another 10 will help healing the wounds in the hearts of both Hindus and Muslims. Economic development will certainly help in healing it faster.
