Well if it was exports etc...why put the two numbers side by side without giving an export number.

Honestly the consumption figures are still so low per capita, that I doubt there is surplus left to export. BD people will take and eat all that BD itself can produce....BD needs to produce as much food as it can do so internally....still long way to go.

Is jackfruit similar to durian? It sure looks similar.

Jackfruit is a cousin of Durian. Jackfruit is generally lot more palatable to lot more people. I used to hate the way it smelled (As a kid)...but now I can get past it (ever since I became teenager) and eat it (its quite good stuff....sort of like juicy fruit chewing gum kinda taste).

I cannot say the same about Durian, I simply cannot get past its smell.

OK show me some news articles of BD exports on fruits. Who are they even exporting mangos to in the last 10 years?...that too half their production (given doubling vs quadrupling difference in the numbers).

I have never had it. Not sure.

Jackfruit is good and tasty fruit. Some people should try to grow it in the soil and weather of Pakistan. One aspect of the jackfruit tree many people are not aware of it cannot survive in seasonal flood water. It dies in knee-deep water. I have seen this many times when the entire BD was once flood-prone. Now, we have less flood and there are virtually many millions of trees here and there and even on the roadsides. Higher lands in Savar and Gazipur have a lot of jackfruit trees.

A peculiar aspect of ownership of roadside fruits. Jackfruits, mangoes, and all other fruits belong to him whose land was bought by the local govt to build the village road. It may also be owned by the family nearest to the road if the original owner's house is in a faraway place. Maybe it is same in Pakistan and India as well.

Here are some old stats from Hortex Foundation. Since there is plenty of demand for fresh produce locally, govt. is not too eager to export fruits and vegetables or will not spend money to encourage exports.

As I had stated before - there is plenty of demand locally for fresh produce as earning capacity of the average person increases. Export will take off only when preservation (canning plants) and refrigeration (Refrigerated vans) get introduced. These are not so common yet for fresh produce.

Bangladesh started exporting mangoes only in 2015. The country exported more than 800 tonnes of mangoes, mainly to the European markets, in 2015 but the quantity fell to 300 tons in 2016 due to tough safety standards there.

So a few 100 tonnes or whatever is nowhere near 50% of 1 million tonne production....that would be needed to explain production/consumption disparity of 4.4 times compared to 2 times growth.

However, I read a news that says BD imports about Tk.1,000 crore worth of mango from India. So, it is of no substantive value if the country exports a tiny 300 ton to some other country. Excerpt:

"The five top export destinations for the commodity (mango) in 2013-14 are - Bangladesh (Rs 896 crore), Malaysia (Rs 639 crore), UAE (Rs 330 crore), Sri Lanka (Rs 392 crore) and Indonesia (Rs 258 crore)".

The easiest difference is smell. Smell of durian you can feel from way far and its very sharp even some people are allergic to it. At first i didnt like it but later own it has its own addiction. Its taste is bit careamy but has distinct taste.

Jackfruit is a staple dessert during monsoon season in Bangladesh and same in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. In the US you can find whole or parts of fresh Jackfruit in any Vietnamese grocery store (in season). I find it quite sweet and tasty.

Yes this makes more sense. But the figures in original article was saying production of mangoes in Bangladesh far outstrips consumption of mangoes (given their growth rates in the end)....and hence ari/katti girl said "exports" to explain for it.

It would have made more sense if the consumption grew more than production, and the difference is in the imports you made from India and wherever else....given BD hardly exports any mangos clearly.
