Bangladeshis would rather swim in the ocean and reach Italy than come to India, the country’s outgoing envoy to New Delhi, Syed Muazzem Ali, said in a farewell speech. The Hindu reported Wednesday that Ali said the per capita income in India “is not that high”.

His statement comes as India’s political discourse finds itself increasingly polarised by the BJP’s bid to eject illegal Bangladeshi immigrants from the country.

Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) is an exercise in this direction, and seeks to expel immigrants who came to India after 1971. Home Minister Amit Shah, who has referred to illegal immigrants as “termites” more than once, said in Parliament Wednesday that there will be an NRC for the entire country.

‘Issue used during elections’
Speaking at the Press Club of India Tuesday, Ali said the issue of illegal immigration was used during the Indian elections.

“There has been so much criticism of Bangladesh in Northeast India because of alleged illegal immigration from our side… ,” he added. “But let me tell you that a person of my country would rather swim in the ocean and reach Italy instead of coming to India. A citizen of Bangladesh would like to go to a place where he can earn more, but as you know the per capita income in India is not that high,” The Hindu quoted him as having said.

Economically, Bangladesh is reportedly pegged on stronger footing than India. The Asian Development Bank (ADB), in its October 2019 report, revised Bangladesh’s GDP growth for 2019 from 8 per cent to 8.1 per cent. The forecast for India, meanwhile, was revised from 7.2 to 6.5 per cent.

He conveniently fails to mention high population density and land scarcity in Bangladesh.

Deporting Bangladeshi Muslims is impossible unless population transfer takes place between Bengal and Bangladesh.

I second that as most migrations are for economic reasons.

Isske Muh main ghee sakkar...I hope his statement is true..

if any one is from Bhubaneswar...then the entire area besides Master Canteen Railway line is a slum area slowly occupied with BD illegal immigrants...Now ...it is quite funny when some one with his stature talks in this way...

It's a failure of GOI. It has let Bangladesh freely Islamize West Bengal, Bihar, Odhisha and North east.

And India dreams of being a superpower when it lets Bangladesh bully it.

The question is why only Bangladeshi Muslims alone ?? Why not all illegal immigrants who are flooding my country, irrespective of their foreign nationality and religious affiliation, huh ???

India is a country of hindus. How can a hindu be illegal immigrant in India? Nationality of a person is defined by his culture. And by default all Hindus are Indians. Where is the question of sending anyone other than muslims back? Who else is there to send back other than muslims? Of course, it is not just Bangladeshi but even Pakistani muslims or other muslims who have to be sent back

.
So you suggest we send Hindu refugees back to Pakistan and Bangladesh to get raped and murdered.

The country was split by Muslims. Why should we forget that? They need to be kicked out

But the government won't send them back. Bangladesh cannot accommodate them. Bangladesh will send another batch of tens of millions to India.

Unfortunately, BJP is only concerned about winning elections. They will identify few illegals, take them off voters list and keep them in camps. Not solve the problem once for all.

They used the same strategy for Indian Muslims as well. Use them to instill fear in the minds of Hindu voters. But keep the problem alive and let it grow. Such short-sightedness exhibited by Indian rulers since the last 1200 years, keeps destroying the country.

I bet you don't know the difference between a refugee and an Illegal immigrant ??

And I don't give a damn about a Hindu, Christian, Muslim or Sikh as long as they are not Indian. If they are stuck between a rock and a hard place it's their fate, and I have full sympathy for them. But that doesn't mean we add an additional million or half people from outside to our already swelling population balloon.

So irrespective of faith, religion etc. a foreigner has no permanent room in India. Period.

No all Hindus and not Indian, you are wrong. Then why don't we add the only Hindu nation (Nepal) as an Indian territory yet, huh ??? Why a separate nation for them ?? Try and add them as an Indian state first and then boast about an exclusive Hindu nation.

Even Mauritius is Hindu majority. It does not mean India has to add it into India. India is Hindus state. But Hindus are not exclusive to India.

We expel muslims and christians to make room for hindus if necessary. Since Muslims and christians are foreign agents, it only makes sense to expel them and accommodate natural citizens of India - the Hindus

You think Hindus who flee Pakistan and Bangladesh are economic immigrants? They give up their land and other assets in their countries and live in huts in India.

India has only Muslim illegal immigrants. Nepalis are allowed to work in India so don't call them illegal immigrants.

We give ration cards, passports, voting ids and even government land free of cost to Muslim immigrants. But Hindu refugees from Pakistan and Bangladesh live in deplorable conditions. Go watch videos of Hindus refugees living in dirty slums of Delhi.

RSS is not much different from the Congress.

Oh really ?? Then be ready for a cute civil war. LOL :woot:

This country very well belong to every citizen born and brought up here irrespective of his religious affiliation. It is not the exclusive property of Mr. Amit Shah's DAD or some Sanghi stooges. Else be ready for a prolonged civil war where in extremist Hindus will be greatly surprised when the minorities fight back, with our without external help. ;)

Again, why discriminate on religious lines ?? That's my question.

The Rohingya Muslims are not illegal immigrants rather refugees who fled for their lives living behind everything. So what is your take on those refugee's. There condition is also too bad.

If you start expelling minorities to make space for "hindus" you'd find a civil war on your hands.

Our founding fathers were very clear on this, they could have emulated Mr. Jinnah and declared India a hindu rhastra, they specifically chose a nation state for all. We are too diverse to be united otherwise.

You are doing your nation a great disservice by dividing it, there is injustice, corruption and politic malaise, however the out, the way forward, is together, not alone.
