Bangladeshis have mixed reaction to West Bengal’s name-change proposal

Brother entire India calls our Bengalis as Bangali in Hindi.

In Hindi Bangal means land of Bengal but in Bengali Bangal is an ethnic term used for residents of erstwhile East Bengal for their distinct Bengali accent. Descendants of East Bengalis are present day Bangladeshis with few having traces of Afghans, Turks, Afro-Arabs and Persians.

.
West Bengalis call East Bengalis (Bangladeshis) Bangal instead of Bangali due to distinct Bengali accent which is very different from accent used in Kolkata. In other way Bangal means Bangladeshis in India. Bangal accent is considered 'backward' and 'rural' accent in West Bengal. Kolkatan accent is considered standard and elite accent of Bengali. The intellectuals of Bangladesh use Kolkatan accent which is called 'Promito Bangla' in Bangladesh.

Banga is the name to go. Bangla means Bangladesh and Banga means Indian Bengal.

Dont spread bull$hit that Kolkata introduced standard bangla without knowing the actual history of Bengali.

Read a poem from 16th century before Kolkata even born. The poet is Alaol from Arakan. He never saw west bengal in his lifetime.

We call Bangladeshis Bangladeshi. In Bengal we all are bengalis or bangalis, that bangal-ghoti thing is barely mentioned nowadays, bangals were those bengalis who had their origin in erstwhile East Bengal, ghotis are Bengalis from soon-to-be-renamed West Bengal.

Thanks brother. I always thought all Bengalis were the same and the partition was only along religious lines. Like for Sindh and Punjab. I did not know you are racially distinct. I always got the impression it was slightly different dialect. Like Assam and Odisha.

What was the division of East Bengal and West Bengal? Was it a British legacy or indigenously traditional?

A circle must have its center crossing point at the very Center of a circle. Naming west Bengal to Bengal/Bongo is like putting the Center at the circumference of a circle. It is against the rule of geometry, and whatever cannot be proved by mathematics cannot stand for long. Mamata is stealing the heritage of Bengal from us. Damn with her.

Some Bangladeshis (the Jamati types) think their Bengali identity is too Hindu-like and claim imaginative Arab, Persian, Pathan, Turk ancestry, considering these races superior and more Islamic. But just check their cricket team, or TV programs and cinemas, you will know.

Bangladesh's demography is like in India where we have early settlers who are 'adivasis' (literally) and probably classified in the groups of scheduled castes and tribes, or dalits, and later settlers who are probably categorized into upper castes (I am no expert in this, so I could be wrong).

What was the division of East Bengal and West Bengal? Was it a British legacy or indigenously traditional?

Nothing. Eastern part of Bengal had more Muslims, western part had more Hindus, in 1905 Carzon decided to split Bengal on religious lines, though the plan was scrapped later due to opposition from certain sections, mostly Hindu Bengalis who called it a British conspiracy of divide and rule, but the division happened eventually in 1947, and on religious lines only. East Bengalis and West Bengalis are nothing but the same linguistic group of people who ended up on either sides after the political division of Bengal.

About the dialect, there is no single East or West Bengali dialect, it changes from district to district. Being the capital city for most part of British rule, Kolkata area was more educated and had greater involvement with finer aspects of culture, like literature, arts, music, etc., and it produced some stalwarts in Bengali literature who standardized the formal Bengali language, its grammar, spelling and pronunciation...which became the official version of Bengali for all Bengali speaking people everywhere, including present day Bangladesh. Bangladeshi jamati types hate this language because those stalwarts of Bengali literature who standardized it were mostly Hindu Bengalis, and Bengali has its roots in Sanskrit (which they consider a Hindu language) like all other Indian languages.

First learn to respect that heritage, a good portion of the Bangladeshi don't even want to be Bengalis.

West Bengal and East Bengal are different linguistically due to different Bengali accent. East Bengalis and present day Bangladeshis speak very casual and informal Bengali with some different vocabulary in day to day life but most West Bengalis talk very bookish and formal Bengali even in daily conversation. Very few West Bengalis bordering Bangladesh talk similar to Bangladeshi accent even then there are differences.

Original West Bengalis facial structure is not same as Bangladeshis or East Bengalis. Generally West Bengalis in majority look a lot better than most East Bengalis and Bangladeshis (No offense but its true). Majority of East Bengalis and present Bangladeshis have tanned dark skin compared to original West Bengalis.

During Partition the area was divided mainly along religious line but also along ethnic line due to certain linguistic and cultural differences.

East Bengali Hindus who settled in West Bengal in 1947 and afterwards and also during 1971 genocide of East Bengalis still have hard time to completely adhere to West Bengali culture even though both are Hindus. The current generation of East Bengali in West Bengal are hybrid generation due to marriage between East Bengali migrants with original West Bengali residents. They are more comfortable in West Bengal than their East Bengali ancestors.

There were serious Bangal (East Bengali)-Ghoti ( original West Bengali) cultural conflicts for decades but now it has become a matter of light unharmed fight and humor which reflects mainly in football matches of Bangal team 'East Bengal' and Ghoti team 'Mohun Bagan'.

Bangal
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bangal is a term used to refer to the people of East Bengal (usually from regions around Dhaka and Barisal), now in Bangladesh (as opposed to the Ghotis of West Bengal). The term is used to describe Bengalis from the east, who are marked by a distinct accent.

Some of the people from East Bengal, mainly Hindus, migrated to West Bengal during the Partition of India in 1947. These refugees were sometimes referred to as Bangals by the native population of West Bengal.

The terms Ghoti and Bangal are mostly used in West Bengal while in Bangladesh, the usage of these is rare except in regions with relatively high concentrations of immigrants from West Bengal.

Amongst the high-caste Bengali Hindus, "Bangal" and "Ghoti" are used as social sub-groups. Those whose families came from East Bengal at the time of Partition are Bangals and those whose families were staying in West Bengal at that time are Ghotis.
Similarly the people who came West Bengal from East Bengal Before the Independence of India,1947 are also known as Ghotis as they were staying in West Bengal, India, at the time of Independence. The term as used here has little relation to actual geography, since most members of these groups all now live in India. Historically, in addition to marrying within their castes, people from these groups also preferred to marry within the group, whether Bangal or Ghoti.

Bangals and Ghotis keep up their cultural rivalry through their respective support of the football clubs East Bengal (Bangals) and Mohun Bagan (Ghotis). They also cherish a rivalry through claim of supremacy of their respective cuisines and especially river-food delicacies, i. e., Chingri (prawn) for Ghotis and Ilish (hilsa) for Bangals.

For the bold part, and again stating that I am not an expert in this; Indian subcontinent (including Bangladesh and Pakistan) has three primary types of population, one group is darker in skin colour with more African facial features and mostly grouped under the lower castes and tribes (termed as 'dalits' in northern India), another group has a bit lighter skin colour with more Caucasian features mostly grouped under the upper castes, they are considered to be the later settlers in the subcontinent, and the third group is Mongoloid. Bengali lower castes and tribes in both West Bengal and Bangladesh look similar irrespective of their religions, and Bengali upper castes in both West Bengal and Bangladesh look similar irrespective of their religions (even Muslims in the subcontinent have their castes on the basis of their ancestral Hindu castes before converting to Islam...though informally). Maybe greater number of Muslims in Bangladesh are converts from lower castes compared to the converts from the higher castes because lower caste Hindus were discriminated against, since Manu wrote that damn theory a couple of thousand years ago. Bengalis also have some Mongoloid features because of their close proximity to Mongloid regions.

'Culture' was not much of a problem, the real problem was that millions of Hindu Bengalis from the eastern parts of Bengal settled in West Bengal within a very short period of time during their mass exodus in 1947 and 1971 (though the inflow continued at a lower but constant level for the last 70 years till today), it put enormous amount of economical, social, humanitarian, pressure on the native Bengalis of the western part, it was supposed to cause certain issues, and it did. Imagine what will happen if millions of Bangladeshis, homeless, penniless, starving, dying, from one division of Bangladesh start settling in another division within a very short period of time.

Amongst the high-caste Bengali Hindus, "Bangal" and "Ghoti" are used as social sub-groups. The bold part above disproves your earlier statement that Bangals and Ghotis are racially different.

What difference? In West Bengal we have/had writers, poets, singers, painters, players, athlete, politicians, even Chief Ministers from from both East Bengalis and West Bengalis, where is the difference in real terms? About their dialect, even in East Bengal/Bangladesh do the people of Barishal, Noakhali, Chattagram, Comilla, Dhaka speak in the same dialect?

I have no problem regarding the national anthem, I just want to put Jasimuddin into somewhere. Maybe as our national poet instead of Nazrul.

Then you should not have any problem with shirk either.
