Bangladeshi tourists in India cross 1.6 million in 10 months

1. In Kolkata more half of the hospital beds are occupied by Bangladeshis. Not only the private ones, but govt hospitals as well. Even they are coming here for petty clinical tests.
2. During any festive time in Bangladesh, you will find people flocking here in Kolkata to buying dress materials. I really can't understand why Bangladesh having so much of developed garment Industry needs people coming here .
3. Leave medical facilities, Bangladesh doesn't produce anything but rice and Hilsa they consume. 90% of fruits, 100% of pulse, over 90% of potatoes and onion, even carps (type of fish), over 80% of mustard oil (main ingredients for fish) are exported everyday to Bangladesh. Even more than 70% of life saving medicines are exported. The list can go on, but....
4. Dacca imo is the most congested city in the world, keeping Kolkata and Howrah in mind. Waves of rickshaws everywhere..

Keep your LDC gareeb money to yourself. We don't want money from beggars, it's not a good look.
But, your govt has opened India to the Bangladeshis, because we have the heart to spend money unlike the world famous miser Indians.

You are exaggerating too much. In 2015-2016 year, 165,000 Bangladeshi patient gone to Indian hospital. And most Bangladeshi patient go to Tamil Nadu for treatment, not Kolkata. How it fill more than half of bed in Kolkata? While 20 million Bangladeshi patient sought treatment in Bangladeshi hospital in a year. Bangladeshi patient who go to India or other countries are no more than 2 percent of all patient who need medical attention in BD.

Garments industry produce western outfit.People buy traditional cloths from India.Indian cloths are comparatively cheaper than Bangladesh and visa is now easy. That's why many people from Khulna, Jessore region from where Kolkata is near, go to shopping there. But this trend will not last long. If you can read Bengali than read these article,

What is your sources of these percentage ? Most of the fruits in Bangladeshi market comes from Bangladeshi sources. Some fruits which don't grow well in our climate like Orange, Apple or grapes comes mainly from Bhutan, not Kolkata.Imported pulses in Bangladesh mainly comes from Nepal.90 percent potato? There should be some limit of bullshitting, Bangladesh is the 7th largest potato producer in the world. Our production exceed 10 million ton per year and we export potato in world market. Why should we import it from India? Mustard oil? Unlike Indian bengali, we don't use mustard oil for everyday cooking, Soybean oil is used in BD.Mustard oil is only used in BD to make Vartas(if you know the meaning). Not for main cooking.Indian onion is considered low quality in BD and people only buy it in lean season.Otherwise people prefer 'deshi' onion. 70 percent life saving medicine? what is your source? 98 percent drugs in Bangladesh comes from domestic sources, other 2 percent, which are some rare ingredients comes from mainly EU and USA.Bangladesh is a net medicine exporting country, if you don't know.Last year we exported around 100 million dollar worth of medicine.

never heard any problem ever reported from bd tourists... they come legally and leave after shopping.. or treatment or sightseeing.
I think we should encourage more bd people to come.
I heard some bd tourists face issues in getting hotel rooms, this should be looked into by govt.
@BDforever can share more info regarding how bdians are treated...
last time i visited India was in 2010 and I had no issues but things changed a lot after BJP has come to in power.
In recent time, One of my friendss did not get medical visa just because he had beard and was questioned for 2 hours.
After cutting of his beard , he applied again and got visa :angel:

more like biased officials than govt... i dont think modi govt sent circular to refuse visa for bearded folks..the same officials would have refused before 2010.. i think..
anyway... i was asking about ordinary people's behaviour not govt official... coz there was report of bd national refused room in mumbai hotels... i have seen in kolkata too once some people acting rude(non bengali ppl) towards bdians... guess thats just one off incident...
generally i think bangladeshis feel at home in kolkata (and may be down south) but rest of india is hit and miss.

There is absolutely no reason any upper-class or even middle-class Bangladesh person would want to live in India.

There is no commonality of language, religion, of culture, of food, of anything. Besides they love where they grew up. Unless they are being persecuted, which is rarely the case, even if you are a Bangladeshi Hindu.

Why would someone even WANT to settle in a country which is to most of them, an alien sub-par situation, filled with large numbers of Kanjoos/rude/uneducated folks and offers a living condition not any better, much less economic opportunity or even a future?

Most educated Bangladeshis don't even need to go to the US or Australia anymore. India is a far cry...

Try to visit Bangladesh sometime....

I think most Indians are actually being a bit self-congratulatory about this. The way most Indians treat Bongs is warning enough.

Believe me - a lot of Bangladeshis go to visit India, sometimes for a change of pace, or because of cheaper and reasonable medical care, hotels etc. Staying there would be the last thing on most every Bangladeshi's mind.

They have their jobs, careers and life in Bangladesh to get back to....

It's getting tiring to counter all this Sanghi propaganda about how Bangladeshis want to settle in the land of milk and honey.....
For a moment I thought I was talking to a Japanese or a Korean citizen, then I looked at your flag and lol

Yeah keep patting your own self in the back buddy.

Ignorance is bliss....:-)

Better to have comparitively lesser tourists from a country who can spend something .

Your assessment is completely wrong. :-)

Bangladeshi tourists are far more well-heeled than the average PDF Indian poster.

Most western tourists who are forced to choose India as a vacation spot are low-budget adventurers and backpackers who spend far less than the average Bangladeshi tourist. Medical tourists from Bangladesh spend lakhs of rupees generally.

Not speaking about the average upper class women who spend lakhs again buying expensive clothing items and jewelry (mainly Kolkata and New Delhi).

I am sorry but you have no clue.

Hello Genius. remove your islamist eyes and tell there is no commonality? then why do Bangladeshis run restaurants under the tag " Indian restaurant" here in US? Have been to dozen such restaurants here in US.

My Bhakt friend - 'Indian cuisine' in restaurants mainly signifies food from the subcontinent. Sanghis claiming patent on 'Indian' cuisine now.

Bangladeshi restaurateurs do it because of the ignorance of Americans and Europeans. Same with Pakistanis opening 'Indian' restaurants. Things will change eventually as Indian cuisine gets more popular like Chinese food forking off into Cantonese, Mandarin, Hokkien etc.

Besides, some 'Indian' restaurant cuisine has little if anything to do with Indian food eaten at home. Most 'Indian' food served in restaurants (like Chicken Tikka Masala and Balti Chicken) were invented by British Bangladeshi chefs in the last century in London. Google is your friend.

@UKBengali Bhai - this guy needs some history lessons. But I think this is slightly OT subject, so open a separate thread if you want to discuss.

No one likes over-seasoned over-salted brash-tasting North Indian cuisine, we are actually helping the reputation of 'Indian' food by offering our far better cuisine as an improvement to the world. So Thanks are in order if anything. :-)

To the nincompoops trying to stop Bangladeshi tourism, go have a talk first with your airlines and hotel associations, see how they support your Sanghi agenda.

I'll be the first one to tell Bangladeshis not to visit India - but then, that'd be rather futile....

This is from Nov. 2015....

Health care, trade push number of Bangladeshi tourists to top spot
The bulk of the increase in the number of visitors from Bangladesh was possibly driven by those coming for medical treatment

Growth in foreign tourist arrivals at 3-year lowWe will discuss cap on fares with airlines this week: Mahesh SharmaSwitzerland sees 26% growth in Indian touristsTo the mystical highlands in LadakhTourism boards propose single visa for ASEAN countries

More tourists from Bangladesh came to India in the first 10 months this year than from the US or the UK - the traditional source countries of most foreign visitors.

From January to October this year, 6.28 million foreign tourists came to India. Most of them were from Bangladesh, whose share was 14.64 per cent. US ranked second, with a share of 14.55 per cent and UK third with 10.75 per cent.

This was a contrast to 2014, when US was at the top of the table with 14.57 per cent. Bangladesh was at the second spot with 12.27 per cent and the UK had contributed 10.92 per cent of the total foreign tourists visiting India.

Last year, the number of foreign tourists coming to India increased by 10 per cent. Bangladesh had replaced UK as the second highest contributor to the numbers.

For the past many years before that, the US was the source country with the largest contribution, accounting for about 15 per cent of the arrivals.

Of the 10 per cent higher or 710,000 additional tourists who visited the country in 2014 (against 2013), 59 per cent were from Bangladesh.

For some, this increase is a "mystery". Ajay Prakash, the former president of Travel Agents' Federation of India who runs Nomad Travels, said as much.

But others provide a number of reasons - medical facilities, business ties - for the increasing numbers.

Sources said the bulk of the increase in the number of visitors from Bangladesh was possibly driven by those coming for medical treatment.

A report by KPMG, which provides risk, financial services and business advisory, internal audit, corporate governance, and tax and regulatory services, last year said Bangladesh accounts for the highest number of medical tourists (22 per cent) coming to India because of the lack of "quality health care infrastructure and unavailability of skilled manpower" in the neighbouring country.

"India is a convenient option because of its physical proximity and similarity in culture, food and language," the report said.

Besides medical tourism, business ties that many Bangladeshis have with the eastern states of India also prompt them to come here.

"Medical tourism is driving tourist arrivals from West Asia, Africa and neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh. Many Bangladeshis would also have business ties with India, especially the states in the eastern region," said Sharat Dhall, the president of online travel portal Yatra.

Trade appears to be one of the drivers as well, if one goes by the commerce ministry data.

While India contributes to the bulk of the bilateral trade, import from Bangladesh rose 28 per cent to $621 million in FY15.

The top items of import from Bangladesh are apparels, textile fibres, fruit and fish. India's export to Bangladesh also grew from $5.14 billion in FY13 to $6.16 billion in FY14 and further to $6.45 billion last year.

Some of the items of we export to Bangladesh include cotton, cereals, salt, organic chemicals, vehicles, and iron and steel.

Most of the visitors from Bangladesh seem to come by bus, availing the service between Dhaka and Kolkata - a distance of about 250 km.

Haridaspur, a check-post in West Bengal, has ranked third or fourth in the top port of entry into India for most of the months in the current year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bangladesh in June this year. The two countries signed 22 pacts for greater cooperation.

There is an emphasis on increasing connectivity between the two countries. In June, India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh signed a Motor Vehicle Agreement for seamless movement of people and goods across their borders.

More tourists mean more visa fees ur consulate will earn , so if one application n visa issue fees is lets say 500 rs ,then 500 x 1.6 million will go to india govs coffers
But i prefer tourists who dnt litter the towns
