Bangladesh said on Saturday it had withdrawn two new school textbooks after protests from Islamist groups incensed by a curriculum overhaul to recognise transgender identities, same-sex relationships and secular science.

Thousands have demonstrated in the capital Dhaka since last month demanding that the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) scrap the changes to the books, published for students aged 11 to 13.

One section of the new history and social science book narrates the story of a child called Sharif who transitions, takes the female name Sharifa and goes to live with other transgender people.

The state-run NCTB said it took the decision to withdraw the books "due to some criticisms and to reduce reading load on students".

"Many schools in our rural areas don't have adequate resources to impart lessons from these books and the contents are a little heavy," spokesman Mohammad Mashiuzzaman told AFP.

"There are also debates over the contents of the books. So we decided to take them out for now so that no one can politicise the issue."

In 2014, the Bangladeshi government allowed people to identify themselves as belonging to a third gender, and it has in recent years given "hijras" broader rights in areas such as housing and higher education.

Multiple Islamic clerics have even issued decrees declaring them part of the country's Muslim mainstream.

Several trans people have contested and won local elections.

But the conservative Muslim-majority country's roughly 1.5 million transgender people still face discrimination and violence, and are often forced into begging or the sex trade to earn money.

The NCTB will also modify the content of two other books, Mashiuzzaman said, referring to titles that Islamist groups claimed were "promoting homosexuality", distorting Bangladeshi history and criticising the tradition of veil-wearing by Muslim women.

One of the withdrawn books included the theory of evolution pioneered by British naturalist Charles Darwin. The book enraged Islamist groups, who called the theory dangerous and demanded it be dropped from the curriculum.

I do believe the state should absolutely recognise and protect sexual minorities. This can be done without such bogus controversies.

Schools does not need to teach this, leave it to parents, hijras have always existed in our society its no big deal.

Hijras require mental health assistance and to break the cycle of generational abuse more than anything, there's no "recognition" needed.

They are tugging on hijras just like they tug on intersex people to make a point for the delusional transgenders.

During sultanat period transgenders were given very high post in administration of state , many good generals were transgender , malik kafur was greatest general of alauddin khilji .

Have no great knowledge on the topic. They are a sexual minority that do suffer abuse and state should step in to protect.

Trans people have always existed. I can not lucidly argue about the causes of their state but assume it is a combination of mental and physiological issue and believe in live and let live. Anything they need such as mental health assistance if required should be offered.

I agree entirely, but the demands of the transgender people infringe upon the rights and safety of other groups, especially women.

Grown men who want people to call them women is not enough for them, they then demand to enter female combat sports, female bathrooms, etc.

Not hard to figure out how problematic the above is.

Sure, but these are western issues. I do not think that has translated into hijra topic as such but could be wrong.

BD must not buy into these bogus narratives. The society is a conservative muslim one but it also accommodates others without any issue unlike many countries. The open multi confessional nature of the country will change for the worse if foreign issues are imported. Massive own goal by the government, there is no need to emulate the west and stir up trouble when it is not necessary.

Agreed. We must live and let live. There is no need to disrupt social cohesion via directed attacks on minorities, it is ALWAYS an unproductive waste of time. Nothing is gained from this.

I have seen many conservative people often have this bizzare obsession with LGBT. They become consumed with nonsensical hypothetical scenerios.

Myself? I do not think much of them at all. I am secure in my beliefs. Do you understand fundamental concepts like population growth that underpin all human societies? If so then you will realize these groups will always remain a minority.

.
Conservatives by their very nature are conservatives and anything that goes against their world view will trigger them. Its best not to and maintain social cohesion.

Yes, the ignorant Islamists should demand the Science subject to include an Islamic proposition derived from Christianity that the entire Universe was created 6000 years before the birth of Jesus. It means about 8,000 years ago!!

This is the best way to enter Eternal Paradise infested by virgins. For me, virgins are no problem. The issue is that most unworthy people on this Earth will be there bickering among themselves. This is what they do in this world.

One trnsgender malikushurk established Sharki sultanat of jaunpur during sultanat period , his sharki clan ruled whole uttar pradesh bihar orissa and some parts of east bangal more than hundred years , his adopted great grandson hussain shah sharki was a great exponent of music during fifteenth century . Sikandar lodi defeated him and destroyed sharki sultanat .

Better to Keep religion and science separate.

Where did I not separate religion from science? Do you really comprehend English?

They are a sexual minority, but their agenda is pushed by the majority. It went from gay rights to LGBTQI+ with a flag, an agenda to normalize additional sexual deviancies in the future.

... for now. West can force its evolving 'human rights' issues upon weaker nations through economic sanctions.
