Shakib stars with bat and ball as Bangladesh wins 1st ODIagainst New Zealand
By The Associated Press (CP) – 3 hours ago

DHAKA, Bangladesh — Shakib Al Hasan claimed four wickets and hit a rapid 58 to help Bangladesh win the opening match of the five-game limited-overs series by nine runs against New Zealand on Tuesday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

New Zealand needed 210 in 37 overs on the Duckworth/Lewis method after rain suspended play after 15 overs when New Zealand was 85-4 in reply to Bangladesh's 228.

But the visitors faltered at 200-8, despite Brendon McCullum's aggressive 61 off 45 balls, which included seven fours and two sixes.

Shakib had already had Jesse Ryder (21) caught by Roqibul Hassan when he removed fellow opener McCullum, and New Zealand steadily lost wickets throughout to damage its chances of victory.

Bangladesh sensed victory when Naeem Islam (2-30) trapped Ross Taylor (42) lbw in the 31st over, and the hosts held their nerve in a tense finish.

Kyle Mills (22) and Tim Southee (1) were unbeaten in the final over.

Shakib's man-of-the-match display, which also included the wickets of Grant Elliott (0) and Nathan McCullum (16), began earlier in the day when he rattled off 58 runs from 51 balls after Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat.

Shahriar Nafees chipped in with 35, while Junaid Siddique added 30.

Shakib was one of three wickets claimed by Mills, while Ryder, Daniel Vettori and Andy McKay took two each for New Zealand to restrict Bangladesh.

Vettori was particularly impressive, ending Nafees' promising innings in the first ball of his second over and ending with figures of 2-29.

The next match is Friday.

That's all from us here at ESPNcricinfo. Do join us on Thursday for the 4th ODI at 9am local time, and make sure you cross over now to our coverage from Bangalore, where the 308-run stand for the third wicket between Sachin and Vijay has finally been broken. On behalf of scorer S Raju and all my colleagues, this is Avi Singh signing off. Thanks for joining us today, we hope you have enjoyed our coverage. Goodbye!!

Kyle Mills picks up US$1000 for the game's best six, Shahriar Nafees the same amount for the fastest fifty.

Daniel Vettori: 'Very disappointed with the batting, Ryder and Watling set us up but from then on we were under pressure. The spinners for Bangladesh bowled very well, we have to adjust quickly. We have to post a decent score in the next game to put some pressure on them.'

Shakib al Hasan: 'Boys played really well, we kept taking wickets, Suhrawadi bowled fantastically. The only area we didn't bowl well was in the Powerplay. Our opening batsmen batted solidly and they gave us a good start, that's what we need.'

The Man of the Match award goes to Suhrawadi Shuvo for his 3 for 14 in 10 overs. 'It's always a good feeling to play well and win, the wicket was helping a lot and I was just putting the ball in the right place.'

So exactly 10 overs to spare for Bangladesh with 7 wickets in hand, a fully deserved win which means that this will be the first ODI series against a full-strength Full Member opposition that Bangladesh cannot lose. The bowlers set this victory up, especially the miserly Suhrawadi who also plucked three wickets. Nafees and Kayes then both batted with ease in reaching fifties. On the other hand the New Zealanders are really behind the eight-ball now, needing to win the last two games just to avoid a series defeat. Expect changes to the middle order for the next game, particularly in light of Stewart's head knock. You would have been forgiven today if you had thought the New Zealanders were actually Bangladesh given the way they played today. There was a distinct lack of the fight normally associated with the Kiwi side except when Taylor and Mills maximised the Batting Powerplay. Stick around for the presentations, taking place shortly.

40.1
Mills to Shakib Al Hasan, (no ball) FOUR, a no-ball but no free hit because Shakib smoked the half-volley through the covers, great way to finish and fitting that their captain wins them the game

End of over 40 (2 runs) Bangladesh 172/3 (2 runs required from 60 balls, RR: 4.30, RRR: 0.20) Raqibul Hasan 18* (53b 1x4) AJ McKay 6-0-28-1
Shakib Al Hasan 9* (6b 2x4) KD Mills 6-0-33-0

39.6
McKay to Raqibul Hasan, no run, but not in this over, as Raqibul leaves alone outside off

39.5
McKay to Raqibul Hasan, 2 runs, slower ball outside off, mistimes the on-the-up drive through the covers for a couple. 2 to get

39.4
McKay to Raqibul Hasan, no run, played down towards point

39.3
McKay to Raqibul Hasan, no run, worked off the pads to midwicket. McKay is round the wicket to the right-hander btw

39.2
McKay to Raqibul Hasan, no run, rears up slightly outside off, easily beats the attempted cut

39.1
McKay to Raqibul Hasan, no run, defends into the off side

End of over 39 (3 runs) Bangladesh 170/3 (4 runs required from 11 overs, RR: 4.35, RRR: 0.36) Raqibul Hasan 16* (47b 1x4) KD Mills 6-0-33-0
Shakib Al Hasan 9* (6b 2x4) AJ McKay 5-0-26-1

150 for SRT in Bangalore. Most 150+ Test match scores ever. Unbelievable.

38.6
Mills to Raqibul Hasan, 1 run, driven wide of cover

38.5
Mills to Raqibul Hasan, no run, on middle stump, Raqibul props forward and defends

38.4
Mills to Raqibul Hasan, no run, played back to Mills on the bounce, who deflects it to mid-off

38.3
Mills to Raqibul Hasan, no run, short on middle, Raqibul plays it down safely

38.2
Mills to Shakib Al Hasan, 1 run, short ball, Shakib goes back and taps to mid-off, runs a quick single

38.1
Mills to Raqibul Hasan, 1 run, Mills strays onto the pads and is worked out to deep backward square

End of over 38 (9 runs) Bangladesh 167/3 (7 runs required from 12 overs, RR: 4.39, RRR: 0.58) Shakib Al Hasan 8* (5b 2x4) AJ McKay 5-0-26-1
Raqibul Hasan 14* (42b 1x4) KD Mills 5-0-30-0

37.6
McKay to Shakib Al Hasan, no run, outside off, very close to a wide, marginal call, left alone to end an average over which somehow earned a wicket

37.5
McKay to Shakib Al Hasan, no run, pushed to point

37.4
McKay to Shakib Al Hasan, FOUR, open the dam and the flood begins. short ball outside off which comes in slightly, gets on top of it and cuts through backward point

37.3
McKay to Shakib Al Hasan, FOUR, finally a semblance of intent to finish the Kiwis off, wide outside off and driven away nicely to the covers

37.2
McKay to Shakib Al Hasan, no run, full ball outside off carved along the ground to point

Shakib enters

37.1
McKay to Junaid Siddique, OUT, short ball outside off, sits up but Siddique manages to slap it to a diving Nathan McCullum. Poor stroke and a poor delivery

Junaid Siddique c NL McCullum b McKay 14 (48m 27b 0x4 0x6) SR: 51.85

37.1
McKay to Junaid Siddique, 1 wide, horrible wide outside off, started outside the wide line and went further, off the pitch almost. Memories of Harmison and Brisbane come flooding back

Drinks break taken, rather perfunctory really considering only 16 runs required but the New Zealanders will be glad for some respite from both the sizzling sun and the dominant Bangladeshi batting

End of over 37 (3 runs) Bangladesh 158/2 (16 runs required from 13 overs, RR: 4.27, RRR: 1.23) Junaid Siddique 14* (26b) KD Mills 5-0-30-0
Raqibul Hasan 14* (42b 1x4) DL Vettori 10-0-36-0

36.6
Mills to Junaid Siddique, 1 run, on leg stump, wristy flip over midwicket and wide of square leg

36.5
Mills to Junaid Siddique, no run, nice drive but cannot beat mid-off

36.4
Mills to Raqibul Hasan, 1 run, short outside off, controlled dab to third man

36.3
Mills to Raqibul Hasan, no run, punched to Brendon McCullum at cover

Hmm, so they can't lose the series now. So I am guessing this will be the first ODI series they won't lose against a test playing nation?

Btw, NZ are a really crap team in subcontinent. I remember how Pakistan used to slaughter them wholesale when they came to Pakistan. Nothing to take away from Bangladesh though, considering the fact that they usually always lose against test teams and to win two games in a row is good effort.

Either our team getting better or NZ out of shape and could not cope with Bangladesh weather. Let us see the outcome of next game.
