If we are talking about the Unocal project that was to ferry the gas from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan and Pakistan to Gwadar/ Fazilka, it will not see the likes of the day till Afghanistan stabilises.

Even if the Americans leave Afghanistan, will it ever be a stable country that is beyond tribal and sectarian calm?

Currently, the pipeline remains a pipedream!

In both case TAPI and IPI pipelines, they are expecting that it will go overland India.

I wonder what will be the transit cost at each country till it finally reaches Bangladesh, if indeed this is what they visualise.

Even it it does happen, they will complain that both Pakistan and India are looting them.

Actually, from what I perceive from various comments that Bangladeshis are never happy unless it is totally loaded in their favour and they have no obligation to anyone!

They are of the type which looks a gift horse, not only in the teeth, but expect the teeth to be made of gold!

Going through your previous posts, I do admire your optimism for this current regime and how you always try to look at it objectively.
I do agree with you that some Bangladeshis go a bit overboard with the paranoia, and it is also equally true that India has used the 1971 card a bit too much for meeting their political ends. I think we have formed our brand of what I called "extremists", or prejudiced mindsets. Their political opinion or bias ness is the main base of any issue, which I think has grave consequences. I think we need more politics based on actual, economic issues rather than 1971, Bangabandhu and war criminals.
The current relationship between India and Bangladesh is favourable, but not definite. We should not make any presumption that it will remain this in way in the near future and sign any deals with them. PM Manmahons remark about jamaat was a wake up call for all of us, that Awami regime is not forever and any deal should be reconsidered before finalising. I don't think policies and deals where we have to rely heavily on India is a very good idea as it gives them more bargaining power in future dispute.

I agree with your post. The bottom line is - Bangladesh needs energy, now and in the future. It's very critical.

@Zabanya: I agree with you...every bilateral relationship is having some issues or the other....If you guys think that AL league is making wrong decisions then of course it is not India that needs to be blamed, rather BD people should introspect more about it....For India...it will like a business deal....If the deal is suitable for her then India will go for it or else they will not go for it....Sometime i feel AL gov is doing more harm to India BD relation than the BNP gov...The reason is that every move of the GOV is not based on the sensible public mood that in turn is impacting Indian relation with BD also...

It's feasible. The AL leadership aren't really that smart for the most part. Yes, very corrupt but lacks brains and organization.

India is not likely to enter into these gas pipeline projects (IPI or TAPI) anytime soon. The reasons are many-fold and the Indian Government must have weighed in the pros and cons of this project.
1) Discovery of large gas fields by Reliance and ONGC on the East coast have doubled the gas production in recent years.
2) 4 or 5 large LNG re-gassification terminals are being constructed with huge investments in addition to the 2 that already exist. So, it looks like LNG from Qatar will be the source for India's gas procurement for the near future.
3) Now that Iran has completed the pipeline on its territories, India always has the option of a submarine pipeline (1000 kms) from Chabahar to Gujarat coast, from where India's domestic gas distribution pipelines are already operational. Also, the Turkmen gas field is already piped to Iran which can also be diverted to Chabahar. The extra cost would be covered by savings from transit fee through Afghan and Pakistan territories.
4) The nuclear deal and the expansion of India's nuclear (large thorium reserves) industry will curtail the requirement for fossil fuel in the future once the fast breeder reactors go live.

So, Bangladesh entering IPI or TAPI doesn't look likely. A better deal for Bangladesh is to pick up equity stake in hydro power projects of India/Nepal/Bhutan and import the electricity generated from these dams.
