Bangladesh wants to have S Asia's largest airport

Bangladesh is contemplating to construct a new airport, which is to be the largest in South Asia.

The mega international airport will be built on the outskirts of capital Dhaka, as part of its efforts to have a new international airport, a Planning Ministry official told Xinhua Thursday.

Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said the government will construct the airport on the west bank of Padma River where wide-bodied aircraft equivalent to Airbus A380 could land and take off.

"We're keen to construct the airport so that it can function as one of the key airports of the South Asia region," he said.

No further details were available about the project which is still under planning stage.

Bangladesh has been making many mega infrastructure projects centering the largest Padma bridge.

The 25-meter-wide and 10-km-long bridge is being built over Padma River, one of the three major rivers in Bangladesh.

Future is always hopeful.

Another paper plan which will never see Day of light.

How do you know?

It's good, but are you sure there will be that much passengers from BD and vise versa?

There could be a lot of obstacles...there could be/would probably be fund shortage. There could be land acquiring problems and other political and infrastructure related problems. And it might very well be just a paper plan.

But I don't think there would be lack of passengers if this goes through. Dhaka is projected to be the most populous city in the world. And as per capita income rises more people would like to fly by plane. And more people will come to Dhaka from other countries and more people will leave to other countries from Dhaka. I don't see any lack of passenger if this actually goes through.

I know the airport going to be at the backyard of your ancestral home. ;)

The planning minister said there will be 380 planes land on the very first day of the opening of the airport.

This rich and drunkard planning minister is only saying something that pleases the PM. The airport cannot be built without getting loans from different international lending agencies. These lenders will make their own survey before making a decision. Thing is why our poor country's politicians have to speak of No. 1, No. 3, No.5 etc.? I have been hearing this numbering chapa since Kamlapur Rly. station was built. I no longer remember its number in Asia.

Now, this AL govt is putting this suffix to whatever it builds. Even if the country needs it, the planners should first think of the location. AL govt. wants it at the other side of Padma Bridge, which makes it far away even from Dhaka. Think of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Sylhet etc.. Shibchar is far away from all the places except that Chittagong is little nearer.

How about placing it on an enlarged Char north-south at the near side of Jamuna somewhere in Aricha? Almost all the places, except Ctg., are nearer from here than Shibchar. Even Chittagong distance can be shortened by constructing an Aricha-Mawa bypass where there is a direct link to the Dhaka-Ctg. highway somewhere in Narayanganj. It will avoid going through the crowded Dhaka.

If BD really wants to, it can afford to build out of it's own funds like with Padma Bridge.

But there are so many other more urgent
prorities the money can be spent on.

Maybe if construction does not start for another
10 years, it may be ok.

It will be within one hour of driving time from dhaka. Padma bridge is connected with expressway. Thats what they want to showcase the world. Not a bad idea i suppose. Will attract a whole bunch of capital in other sectors.

Kinda disagree with that statement, when income increases, domestic flight is supposed to increase rather than international flight, what about the rest of Bangladesh?
I would suggest, it's better to build a high speed rail corridor, which will be a huge boost to the economy.

One hour bus ride will not take people to the new airport. Read it two hours, minimum. The govt should build and operate Motijheel-airport specific railway train service with limited number of stations. This is how the journey can be maintained within the limit of one hour. In that case, a bus service can also be operated.

We don't even have metro rail yet....you're asking for high speed rail corridors and bullet trains....

Anyway this airport probably will never be built...that being said which is the biggest airport in south Asia?

Highspeed corridor, not bullet trains. Metro is entirely different and expensive. You can build a highspeed corridor, ie with fast running trains at 150-200 KMPh

Largest by what measure? Annual passenger load? Physical space used?

It's hard to believe a greenfield airport will be able to beat the existing airports in S.Asia (ie India) who themselves are seeing enormous growth year on year and struggling to keep up with demand.
