The BNP says a ‘morally weak’ Bangladesh government has slashed transit fee for Indian vehicles shipping goods to ‘please India’.

BNP Spokesperson Asaduzzaman Ripon told reporters that the move was ‘hurting’ Dhaka’s interests while benefitting Delhi.

He said an inter-ministerial meeting on Wednesday ignored a NBR proposal to impose a fee of Tk 10,000 on containers India would ship to its states through Bangladesh.

“The NBR proposed to charge Tk 1,000 per tonne but they (the policymakers) brought it down to Tk 580,” he claimed.

Using Bangladesh’s land route would significantly reduce distance and save costs for India in transhipping goods to its north-eastern states.

“Bangladesh could have gained from the economic benefit India will enjoy [from here],” he said, adding, “We’re only demanding our just share.”

The government has been saying that both the countries would benefit from improved regional connectivity.

India’s mountainous north-east is surrounded by Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan and China. The only land route to these states from within India is through West Bengal.

But floods and landslides in monsoon make road transport difficult. Frequent strikes and blockade by various groups further aggravate the situation.

Agartala via Guwahati, for instance, is 1,650 km from Kolkata. The distance between Agartala and Kolkata via Bangladesh is just about 350 km.

Ripon said his party was in favour of strengthening economic ties with India but it opposed ‘lenient’ policy.

“We don’t believe India wants to be unilaterally benefitted by getting low transit fee,” he said. “This morally weak [Bangladesh] government has brought down the fee to Tk 580 to please India.”

Bangladesh should just scrap any deal with India regarding transit. Even 7 dollar per ton is too low. If India transport 10 million ton goods per year through our road then we will get just 70 million dollar. A peanut by any measure. But what will be the cost on the account of infrastructure damage due to movement of heavy lorry, tracks? I think it is many times more than that paltry 70 million dollar. So we should just scrap the deal and show Bharat middle finger.

These zero sum arguments don't serve Indians or Bangladeshis. SAARC's transition into a meaningful trading bloc needs foolish nationalists from selling the idea that whats good for my business partner is bad for me and visa-versa.
Barriers to trade and transit with minimum hindrance serves the downtrodden though not the rent gathering politicians.

1. In India, goods traveling from one state to another have to pay tax!!
2. Once BAL/SHW are ousted, we need to scrap all covert and overt deals with India.

You know me very well i was just being sarcastic,Awami League should watch out for National Interests first,Damage to Road infrastructure is know , because of Heavy Traffic other problems like Road Accidents and smuggling can't be ruled out. Bangladesh should increase Transit fee in such a way that it can maintain roads and also get profit.I am sure smuggling of drugs and other precious things can't be ruled out in and out from Bangladesh.Pakistan didn't granted Transit to India for Afghanistan due to these reasons.
In short it may cost more Bangladesh then India Pays.
