Bangladesh set to have own space satellite by 2013

Dhaka, June 28: Bangladesh is likely to have its own satellite in the space by the end of 2013 as the Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARRSO) is jointly working with Asia Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCOP) in this regard.

Addressing the inaugural session of a two-day seminar on space technology application at SPARSO auditorium in Dhaka Tuesday,
Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury said, the government has made a significant progress to this end with its limited resources.

"Our satellite will not be for capturing the space, but using the space technology for welfare of our people," she said lambasting the donors for their reluctance to provide support for the space satellite project.
"Bangladesh is trying to launch two satellites- one for high resolution image and other for communication with the technological support of the APSCOP," chairman of the SPARSO Mujibur Rahman Hawlader said.
State Minister for Environment and Forests Dr Hasan Mahmud attended the function as special guest while secretary of the Ministry of Defence M Asaduzzaman was in the chair.

Begum Matia Chowdhury praised the role and activities of SPARSO and said the organization over the years has been playing a very effective role in promoting space science and technology in the fields of agriculture, forestry, geology, cartography, water resources, land use and land cover.

She reiterated the political commitment of the present government to strengthen the SPARSO to promote space research and survey and disseminate the findings to the government, relevant authorities and different user groups to lessen the extent of damage in natural disasters.

She alleged that all governments except Awami League was reluctant to capacity building of the SPARSO saying the SPARSO data helped taking many preventive and precautionary measures during floods and cyclones in 1997 and 1998 when the Awami League government was in power. But, the process was not followed in 1991 and 2008, she said.
State Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said promotion of space science and technology is very crucial for Bangladesh, as the country, according to many credible organizations, is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change.

He laid importance on capacity building of the SPARSO both from skilled manpower and technological aspects and said the Ministry of Environment and Forests has already approved a 150-million taka project from Climate Change Trust Fund for capacity building of the SPARSO.

Dr Hasan said Bangladesh also has undertaken a project for satellite monitoring of country's forest resources and said the project would help watching 10 feet X10 feet forest area.

Focusing on government's vision for building a Digital Bangladesh, he said space science should be given high priority to help the country advance towards progress and prosperity.

BTRC process on to appoint consultant targeting to launch country’s 1st satellite by 2013

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is proceeding with its target to launch Bangladesh’s first ever satellite into orbit by December 2013.

As part of the plan, the BTRC already started a tendering process to appoint an international consulting firm to help achieve its goal.

Under its tendering process, the telecom watchdog will receive technical and financial offers from the short-listed bidders to appoint the consultant.

According to a source, the BTRC, as part of the government decision to launch the satellite, invited expression of interest (EOI) from international firms in November last year to appoint the consultant.

In response, a total of 31 firms submitted their initial proposals for the job. But after a scrutiny, the BTRC short-listed seven firms from different countries – two from USA, and one each from Canada, France, Russia and Germany.

Later, the sort-listed firms were issued request for proposal (RFP) to submit their final technical and financial offers in detail.

Meanwhile, the BTRC today (Monday) held a meeting with representatives of the sort-listed firms to discuss the project. Representatives from five firms were present in the meeting, presided over by BTRC chairman Zia Ahmed.

After a thorough discussion on different aspects of the project, the meeting expressed the hope that Bangladesh would be able to appoint a consultant by May this year and launch its first satellite by December 2013.

Good thing.

Most important to have one's own satellite.

BD has launch pad..????

I am sure they will build one.

or piggyback/ pick a back, a satellite on a foreign one like the French or Chinese and shoot it into outer space.

The sky is the limit, nay, beyond the sky is the limit in these fields.

Great news, this will eventually help in mapping the whole country
which is crucial right now. Real time scans will be an asset
for meteorological departments.

BD has launch pad..????

China has................. :lazy:

So according to the article .. we getting two satellites...

Getting two satellites?

Aren't you engineering your own?

Foreign satellites may have overrides secretly done in.

Hmmm we now have a new space race going on in South Asia.

Pakistan is also scheduled to unveil its own satellite some time next year.

Anyways all the best.

Will it be a Geo sync one or a Polar sync one ?

two .. that is what article says.. just read the article, where the minister says that we are not there to capture space but those satellites are for need basis.
We probably hire satellite building companies to build one for us. That will give us maximum return for the money.

Even on one satellite 'specialised' purpose apertures can be engineered.

While i comprehend your point...but once we acquire the skills, i believe we may tailor new satellites to needs.

So, somehow i feel there is no need to re-engineer and devote it to a single yet distinct purpose.

Cheers!!!
