In recent years, Russia has supplied Bangladesh with MiG-29 jets, three Mi-171Sh helicopters and several dozen armoured vehicles

DHAKA, October 27. /TASS/. Bangladesh is looking to Russia to strengthen its naval fleet and lessen dependence on Chinese armoury, a government minister has revealed.

First sights are on buying two off-the-shelf diesel-electric submarines and warplanes for its navy as the country seeks to distance itself from Chinese sourcing of around half its weapons inventory, Minister of Information Hasanul Haq Inu told Tass on Monday.

Defense sector partnership would not be limited to equipment, he said, eyeing Russian training for Bangladeshi military and technology transfer.

The two states are already cooperating successfully in the defense sector. In recent years, Russia has supplied Bangladesh with MiG-29 jets, three Mi-171Sh helicopters and several dozen armoured vehicles.

Partnership received new impetus when Prime Minister and Defense Minister Sheikh Hasina visited Moscow last year to agree a $1.5 billion loan for Bangladesh, mostly to buy Russian weapons for ground troops, air defence equipment and military transport helicopters.

No date has been fixed for further acquisition talks but Tass has already reported that the Bangladeshi navy expected government go-ahead to buy submarines by 2019.

Hope US puts a stop to any more major weapons purchases from Russia.

BD needs to fully embrace Chinese arms for its national security.

Stupid move from China you can get better equipment or similar and Bangladesh needs several hundred new Tanks and Fighter Jets

Mi-171Sh helicopters are new, those Migs came many years ago. YAK 130s will be something new, when they land in BD.

If BD want to purchase fighter jets then Mig-35D with TOT would be best choice from Russia as it will not allow any reaction on Indian side too as they will not like any thing in BD military which is on par of their best jet.

Other then Russian, used F-16s from US or other operators will be good purchase from west, if BD does not have money they should go for JF-17 or J-10 later will be big boost for their front line fighter capability.

New variants of Hip is always a good purchase for developing countries, but why BD going for Yak-130s?

I always thought of this, if BD had some F-16s. They could be more suitable for BD.
I heard from many BD military officers; they have bad perception for JF-17 or J-10. As they are not proven fighters.

BD air force has something big in mind. Right now they have become a trainer based air force.

F-16 is very reliable jet, plus it is less maintenance frenzy then Mig-29s and cost effective too.

J-10 is Chinas main multirole single engine plane and it gets tech of 5th gen tested on it which means those stuff is available to be integrated in J-10 when needed or if customer required, with upcoming AESA upgrade only MKI will be superior to it in some aspects till Rafale arrived, but Chinese are working on evolving it to very high standards, like US did to F-16s.

But what JF-17 allows Pakistan is totally different, it allows PAF to integrate or test any thing they wanted, it is sanction free and it can carry more list of weapons then our F-16s including ALCMs.

Incorrect.
Since the volume of purchase is small, it is not a security threat for India at all. Even Typhoon wont be an issue for us should GoB want to purchase them.

These fighters being purchased now are essentially geared towards Myanmar.

India can help Bangladesh with mig 29 maintenance, spares etc

Bangladesh if it decides to buy Chinese to oppose India , will be a very bad move

Friendly India is the easier way for its development

I wonder why Bangladesh needs weapon at all... Submarines gosh .. U can develop your economy first and leisurely buy weapons .. No risk for them at all unless they want to do something..
