Bangladesh remittances rise 10 pct in 2011/12

Bangladesh remittances rise 10 pct in 2011/12 | Reuters

DHAKA, July 4 | Wed Jul 4, 2012 5:22pm IST

(Reuters) - Money sent home by Bangladeshis working abroad rose more than 10 percent to $12.85 billion in the financial year that ended in June, the central bank said on Wednesday.

Central bank governor Atiur Rahman told Reuters the government and central bank, along with commercial banks were seeking to make it easier for people to send money home, and he was hopeful of an increase in remittances of more than 10 percent in the current fiscal year.

"We have been very active and several exchange houses were opened, particularly in those countries where our expatriates live in big numbers," Rahman said, adding that more money was also being sent through regular commercial banking channels.

"We hope to achieve more than 10 percent growth in the current fiscal year," Rahman said.

The taka currency's sliding value against the dollar played big part in decisions by people over how much money to remit, according to another senior central bank official.

On Wednesday, the taka traded at around 81.81 to the dollar, more than 9 percent weaker than its year ago level.

Remittances from about eight million citizens working abroad are critical for the impoverished South Asian nation and are key sources of foreign exchange alongside garment exports which account for 80 percent of the total export earnings of around $25 billion a year.

Bangladesh received $11.65 billion in remittances from citizens overseas in the 2010-11 fiscal year, 6 percent more than in the previous year, but that was the slowest pace of growth in many years.

A majority of Bangladesh expatriates are employed in Middle Eastern countries and almost 60 percent of the remittances come from there. Rahman said the government was seeking to enable workers to go to more countries, notably Malaysia.

How is that possible when most of the middle eastern countries such as Kuwait stopped taking bangladeshi workers?

.
they wont stop they need the workers as much as the workers need jobs, where else will they resort to apart from south asia, only region with an abundant supply of workers

Are you aware that Saudi Arabia has stopped hiring from Bangladesh, many suspect because of the death of Saudi diplomat and the investigation having no headway after many months to find the culprit? There has been allegations that RAW trained RAWami death squad did this job at India's instruction, so Indians get more jobs there instead. Similar thing is happening with our relations with Libya. So yes the workers will go from South Asia all right, but not from Bangladesh due to excellent performance of RAWami League following excellent instructions from South Block.

Not really.

It is just that the demand of manual labor has gone down. There are changes in trend. Demand for young professionals are pretty high over there now.

Are you saying that Hasina govt.'s actions did not affect our relationship with GCC countries and Libya?

I inquired about the visa the other day. There used to be smaller companies and recruiting companies who used to hire most of the Bengalis. But in current arrangement, only the parent and big companies can hire Bangladeshis. You have to be skilled to be hired in those companies. But, after stopping the flood gate of massive migration the salary of existing workers increased many fold and sending more remittance than before.

We should have similar arrangement like Malaysia where govt should recruit and send the workers to Saudi. It will ensure welfare of the worker as well as cut the middlemen.

Not really.

Although, it is understandable that the Saudi Government might be unhappy with the progress regarding the investigation on the murder of a Saudi diplomat. And that of the trail of alleged war criminals.

They already know of Awami's usual anarchy-like style of rule. Everyone knows that.

But I do not think that should affect the labor market too much. It isn't really that severe. It's just that the trend in the Middle East labor market has certainly changed.

What did we do to Libya? That country is in a mess right now, no use looking there.

I do not have information to refute opinions from you two, Zabaniya and iajdani, so I will let others with more 1st hand information comment on it.

If remittances is really rising, that is always welcome news for Bangladesh and hiring should be more organized through govt. channels, no question about that.

I have already confirmed it with my sources (real life).

Remittance is tail end result of manpower export. If you note remittance growth rate in last 3 years it has decreased significantly. 10% growth is indication that growth rate has forced to be bottomed by Awami league regime. Also, remember because of taka depreciation and other global economic factors expatriates choose to send their savings back to Bangladesh. That also contributed to the current increase.

Now couple of folks claim there were increased number of professional went to Saudi Arabia and middle east and that contributed to remittance increase. I would ask them to show some statistics to support their claim.

To some people whatever happen in Bangladesh they need to bring BAL in it... if bad happens then this people go for full scale bashing but in case of good news they try to self discover other funny x, y, z reason for it.

63608 went abroad with jobs in Jan | Priyo News

Bangladesh sent 63608 workers abroad this January alone which is higher then the previous 2 years.

A total of 50,632 workers went abroad in January 2009, while during the same period, the number is 33,847 in 2010 and 32,924 in 2011.

Similarly last year alone 565000 workers went abroad which is higher then the last 2 years...

Although manpower export had gone down worryingly in the last few years, a total of 5,65,000 workers went abroad last year.

BMET statistics show that a total of 475,278 workers went abroad for jobs in 2009 and 3,90,702 in 2010.

To these persons 565000 people going abroad has no effect in increase of remittance earning.

Just wondering how pathetic these people are.

May I ask about the political persuasion of this real life source?

There is no "political persuasion". Lolz...

It was my contact with the links I have with the travel market and the university. Although, there aren't any established statistics yet. It's too early to establish statistics now.

The Taka's value depreciated mainly because of these quick rental power plants. They had to import large amounts of oil from abroad. They did that even though there were many cheaper alternative sources of energy like hydro, coal and wind.
