Who is afraid of FTA ? Indonesia ( and ASEAN ) has already had FTA with China since 2009

I am taking about FTA with Bangladesh whereby you will have to let your garment manufacturers compete without protection.

1. Trajectory of Indonesia’s Electronics Industry

The trajectory of Indonesia’s electronics industry can be traced back to the 1950s with the founding of PT Transistor Radio Manufacturing Company (now known as PT National Panasonic Gobel Indonesia), the first domestic producer of transistor radios.

The early 1960s became a new beginning for the country’s electronics industry with the first production of black-and-white televisions. At that time, most electronic products in Indonesia were imported.

In the early 1970s Indonesia began the import substitution agenda, applying tariff and non-tariff barriers to restrict the imports of radios and televisions as finished goods. Rather than operating on their own, foreign electronics companies were encouraged to invest in the country through joint ventures and technical cooperation with domestic firms to supply domestic demand.

Because:

1. It doesn’t look at production capacity through the security or nationalistic lens.

2. It is focussed on a small number of sectors and hence very competitive.

For compressor manufacturing, I think Astra International has one

BD's economy is a huge opportunity for Indonesia.

It could quite easily grow 8%+ this decade and incomes rising quickly on the back of this.

At this stage there probably is little industrial goods that Indonesia could offer BD apart from in niche aerospace subsystems but coal imports are likely to rise as more coal-fired power stations come online and there is the huge potential of greater agriculture exports and wood products. BD can never produce enough food to satisfy the needs of a population that will near 200 million sometime in the next decade.

Last fiscal BD took in around 2 billion US dollars of exports from Indonesia and it could easily grow maybe 15% a year this decade, up from 11% over the last 25 years.

BD and Indonesia should work together economically as BD could become a relatively large economy within 15-20 years not too far from the size of Indonesia.
