Bangladesh is way ahead of India: Amartya Sen

Bangladesh has been doing really well for itself in the past decade or so, their economy will for surely become the second largest in South Asia within the next 2 decades. India and Bangladesh can both learn a lot from each other. We lag behind in some fields which the government is working hard on, while progress is slow, change is happening. The current government in Bangladesh has done a great job for the country contrary to what many Bangladeshi member say here.

A few examples would be much appreciated and not any self serving agendas such as war criminals.
Even today a senior awami league MP has intensely criticized the gov't mismanagement and failure.

Heh.

Of course I don't mind; why should I? I never used the expression East Bengal; please do me a favour and go back through my posts carefully! I did, however, use east Bengali, which is perfectly valid, as we were not ever Bangladeshi; you are Bangladeshi, we are not. We came out of east Bengal, so we were - and remain - east Bengali.

I don't blame you; this is a subtle error, fairly easy to make, and falls in the category of anachronism. There was no Bangladesh in those days.

Our Pakistani friends, on another thread, are making monkeys of themselves for the nth time, and talking about Porus the Punjabi king, or king of a people that did not exist at that time. Their point - there is one ignorant youngster leading the charge - is probably that this was the Punjab even then. It wasn't; Punjab, if one analyses the word, is a post-Islamic word, a synthesis of two Persian words, which were never used until the time of the Sultanate. The language Punjabi also started only in the 12th to 13th centuries, so what they are thinking of is not clear. Actually, they aren't thinking.

I am sure you will object strongly if I call myself Bangladeshi, so east Bengali remains the correct expression for us folks. Hope this clears things up ;-)

I ve mentioned on other thread, about Indians would like to stick with the ramayan era's pride (BSF related barbaric topics). We dont accept the old names existed during pakistan/british-raj. Those Hindu people who left their motherland only to change of luck, are the betrayers of their motherland. But, we didn't leave. Who cares what some betrayer/kicked-out's hindi speaking bengali ancestors think. We do never use the term epar-opar, kata-taarer dewal. Cause, those doesn't matter for us cause we have gained in true brave bengali's way. And, WB who left with Indians are the losing side to the hindi-speaking, gorkhaland ppl.

And, from this side we will keep smilling.

My, my, what a response! I must hand it to you for remembering with such clarity what you have mentioned on "other thread".

Let me reiterate that a neighbour has a bright prospect of the future, however bad-tempered and surly he may be. Perhaps with decreasing insecurity, that state of temper may change.

I ve mentioned on other thread, about Indians would like to stick with the ramayan era's pride (BSF related barbaric topics).

Perhaps you could make it clear what that, whatever it means, has to do with this.

We dont accept the old names existed during pakistan/british-raj.

Noted. I presume Dhaka, Chittagong and Barisal, for instance, are also under revision. Or are you referring to those names that started only in "British-raj"? Or only in "Pakistan"?

It is clear that there is some effort at identity definition going on, but of what sort is less clear. Whatever it is, good luck to you. What you do with and to your country, as it is today, is entirely, without any quibble, your business, as long as the repercussions do not have to be faced by others.

Similarly my heritage and that of millions like I, is my business and none of yours. If I say I come from east Bengal, it cannot concern you, since the entity doesn't exist any more and you are concerned with what exists today.

So you mind your business and allow me to mind mine. And we can both keep smiling.

Those Hindu people who left their motherland only to change of luck, are the betrayers of their motherland.

If you want some evidence about why "those Hindu people" left their motherland, I can make the matter as clear as you wish. Have you read the resignation letter of Jinnah's hand-picked Finance Minister, when he explained why he was resigning? Read up on facts and on historical evidence before you take to posturing.

But, we didn't leave. Who cares what some betrayer/kicked-out's hindi speaking bengali ancestors think.

Evidently you are not one of the thousands throning our streets and our roads at this moment, seeking specialised medical attention, business prospects, and employment. I congratulate you on your sturdy independence and refusal to follow the hordes who have decided otherwise. I presume that you will not categorise these as betrayer/kicked out hindi speaking bengali ancestors. Or as they are not Hindu, you will not find it necessary to define them as Those Hindu people who left their motherland only to change of luck, are the betrayers of their motherland.

Purely as a matter of interest, what will you call them? With a smile, of course.

We do never use the term epar-opar, kata-taarer dewal.

It is not difficult to understand why the term kata-taarer dewal makes you nervous.

Has it occurred to you that these are used sometimes by condescending and hateful people who want to find something in common with you, and after failing to think of anything useful, come up with these useless concepts? Think about it.

Cause, those doesn't matter for us cause we have gained in true brave bengali's way.

It does seem sometimes that you need to be reassured every five minutes about being true, brave Bengalis.

Here we go: you are true brave Bengalis and you won everything for yourselves, and continue to win. Until the next five minutes, then.

And, WB who left with Indians are the losing side to the hindi-speaking, gorkhaland ppl.

Good. Congratulations. Gorkhas don't speak Hindi, but that should not matter to you; you have already stated that it is none of your business.

You to yours, we to ours. We are happy that you are happy with your constant civil wars, and your inherent hatred of each other. While you have others to hate, you do that with the greatest of ease. Once your hate has eliminated them, you start on 'your own'. That should keep your numbers in check, if nothing else. I am impressed, for instance, by the family planning measures of your BDR, who eliminated a lot of Pakistan-centric men and women involved in military service. Very strategic move, and it is nice to watch and realise that by your good wishes, we are not part of these periodic massacres.

And, from this side we will keep smilling.

You will get as many as you give.

The chauvinism and blatant political partisanship which can be witnessed among Bangladeshis(atleast in this forum) is the direct consequence of the void that had been created because of the evacuation of middle and upper class Hindus who were the bedrock of East Bengali society. Like many other society, religious intolerance has been crawled into the society to fill the empty. Unfortunately Bengal has been a secular community for most of her history, religious zealotry was an idea alien to the land - result is a confused and partisan community, desperately looking for an identity of their own.

I ve mentioned on other thread, about Indians would like to stick with the ramayan era's pride (BSF related barbaric topics). We dont accept the old names existed during pakistan/british-raj. You seem to be still in high-school like most of the members here, so it's futile to expect any knowledge of history from you. Those people, who were made to leave their ancestral home just because bigots like you can encroach on their land and belongings, in spite of having to start their life from zero, reached heights that you lot ever will.

Talking about treachery, it's rather funny when Bangladeshis speak that BSF looted their erm.. wash-basins, when most of them themselves are traitors to their own stock by living off the looted land of their fellow Bengalis and at the same time claiming to be true-Bengali!

And let me remind you, just as I'm composing this reply, thousands of you are pouring in to Calcutta, legally and illegally, to get their knee fixed/appendix removed and to provide food to their half a dozen kids back at the country of true and brave bengalis. And no, Bengali doctors of West Bengal don't inquire whether the patient is Hindu or Muslim before operating on him/her.

The Hindus who migrated to that Ghati country called west Bengal and the muslims who had stayed in their homeland - are together called Bangal by the Ghatis. Hindus who left their homeland have an equal right to their motherland Bangladesh. People like Amartya Sen feel more at home in Bangladesh where they can speak in their native dialect. This Nobel Prize winner has donated a large sum of money to Bangladesh. But, I do not remember on what purpose it was done.

Thank you for your generous words; it is what I have come to expect from you, notwithstanding our frequent disagreements. But some things need to be cleared up. Clearly not every Bangladeshi thinks like you; clearly not every Bangladeshi has your dignity and self-respect. Those others seem to need some answers.

Let's get one thing clear - respect breeds respect. If Bangladeshis do not have the manners nor the social discipline to keep your teenagers polite and civilised in the presence of their elders and betters, in the presence of those who have forgotten more about the history and sociology of the country known as Bengal, and now known by different names, so be it. Nobody is a beggar before your gracious lordships; we came to this strange ghoti land as beggars and destitute, we have earned our place in society by hard work and endeavour. My entire family on my father's side was sheltered by the only earning member; on my mother's side, the only earning member distributed his salary among the others as long as he was working and they were not. It wasn't any loudmouth from Bangladesh who kept us going, it was our own. And today, both families are socially respectable; not rich, that was never an objective, but respected for our contributions.

So if any of you wants us to go away and never bother you again, don't worry; we hang on to these roots out of sentiment, and love and affection, not dire need. If the borders of Bangladesh were to be permanently defined with steel and concrete, with what one upstart has called Kaanta-tarer byara, we have no difficulty in turning away and going our own way. In this new country of ours, this growing, bustling, untidy, dirty, , advanced, backward, conservative, modern antheap, we have our places. They don't care about ghotis and bangals, they want commitment and hard work, and that a bangal does not need to learn - or to acquire. You want friendship, come and ask; you will not find us wanting in warmth of heart. You want a fight, come and ask; you will not find us wanting in that department either. Only get rid of the misapprehension that we are dying for your attention. In particular, for the attention of your rude and boorish ill-mannered fringe elements.

I'm sorry, but how can we call ourselves as "doing better than India"? We cannot build CNG taxis/cars/buses. We import them from China and India. Electronics from China. Even clothes from China. We are proud to buy foreign things at the expensive shopping malls.

As for our famous education "system", can any BD member truthfully say that our education system is anything but rubbish? From top to bottom its rotten. Add to that we BDeshis have no work ethic, are lazy and need to have domestic helps, who do our housework for us. No other country has outsiders doing the housework for them. We are not self-sufficient in any industry at all. I don't see anything to celebrate about.

The average BDeshi is a lazy unpatriotic person who just wants a comfortable and luxurious life for himself/herself and FVCK the nation.

This "girl's education", "microcredit", "human rights", "trial of war criminals" - these issues are just stupid things which distract us from real economic and Industrial development. But alas, we BDeshis feel comfortable with these NGO and foreign aid-related issues. Its because we are non-patriotic people so we feel very proud when an outsider, especially a white outsider praises us. We are more concerned about our "image" than our "capability".

In the end, we are suffering from corruption at all levels, an enormous and inefficient bureaucracy, no industrial development, our universities and ports are often shut down due to political activity. (+Electricity crisis)

You may call me a traitor or "jamati", but these are real facts. You people ignore the real issues and sing and dance about these stupid, irrelevant things.

Simple fact is that we are deep sh*t, and there is no room for complacency or to congratulate ourselves.

Oh, and another are of concern is our Armed Forces. It has become an enormous business racket. Have any of you been to a house in any DOHS? Did you see what extreme luxury they live in? In addition, the Army has numerous businesses through the sena kalyan sangstha. I ask you a question, is it the duty of an Army to produce Ice-Cream? To raise chickens? To run CNG-conversion workshops? Do not forget the recent controversy in Rupganj over grabbing land by the Army to build yet another housing project, where their fat wives and spoiled children will live in a life of luxury kicking around their kajer mey. Army officers live like kings in BD, and have no professionalism. India does not need to attack BD to win, they only have to launch a hostile takeover of BD Army, Inc. and offer a handsome price to the generals. And if any of you are in the Army and feel offended, I have relatives in the Army as well, and they are just as disgusted with the increasingly commercial nature, as me.

Before 1947 there was no India, Pakistan, or Bangladesh. It was commonly known as the British Raj. Joe is right referring Bangladesh as East Bengal simply because that was the name back then.
