Bangladesh is not in the United States democracy conference this time as well​

US President-elect Joe Biden is going to host the Democratic Convention for the second time. He will hold this conference jointly with four other countries of four continents on March 29 and 30 of this year. However, Bangladesh was not invited to this conference either.

The US has invited 111 countries including India, Pakistan, Nepal and Maldives in the second phase of the conference.

According to the US State Department, the four countries that have been added as joint hosts this time are Costa Rica, the Netherlands, South Korea and Zambia. The conference will be held in all five countries including the United States.

Government, private sector and civil society representatives will be invited. It will be discussed how democratic countries provide better services to citizens and how these countries are best prepared to deal with global problems.

Earlier, Joe Biden organized the first democracy convention in December 2021. The governments of the hundreds of countries participating in that conference made some 750 pledges to advance the practice of democracy, fight corruption and confront authoritarian rule.

This year's conference will discuss the implementation of those commitments.

Foreign Secretary Masood bin Momen said in this context, 'Countries like the United States regularly organize such conferences for various reasons. They invite countries to it from their own calculations.'

He also mentioned that the government is exchanging regular visits and exchanges with the US government at various levels.

Only democratic countries with democratic values have been invited. Bangladesh is an autocratic country ruled by one person at the behest of one political party named BAL which is in essence no different from North Korea.

America again showed the way to Bangladesh. Accept the American proposition to revive democracy or get collapsed economically. BD has been forced to take an IMF loan with many conditions.

I believe, there are many more unwritten conditions behind this IMF bailout money. One unwritten condition is to hold an election under a caretaker govt.

Bangladesh is currently not a democracy under any barometer.

However whilst many of repressive features of dictatorship is present it is also not wholly a dictatorship.

I would describe it as more of a kleptocracy of politician/businessmen working to maintain status quo where they monopolise state power to gain economic power.

A large percent of the nation is fine with it as long as the economy keeps growing as opposition simply reflects another group of kleptocrats.

BD objectively is an imperfect democracy....having said that we should not feel slighted to not get an invitation. I would say it is a good thing and helps with our balancing act with global and regional powers.

However those who believes that BAL has legitimacy should reassess. Global opinion can not be silenced as easily as incountry media.

Why do you think a govt is elected directly by the people? People;e elect MPs or MNAs and they elect a new govt. This is how the IK govt was ousted and the Shabaz govt was formed.

The majority must be granted.
