And so it begins....finally, Bangladeshi made medicine to be sold in the US!

Bangladesh forays into US market with Beximco Pharma

A leading drugmaker has ventured into the $425-billion US prescription drug market in a first for a Bangladeshi pharmaco, opening a new window on export earnings.

Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd said on Thursday they had commenced the export of hypertensive drug, Carvedilol, and became the first Bangladeshi company to enter the stringent market regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith said at the launch in Dhaka that the decades old company had “achieved glory for us.”

“We must celebrate the glory,” he said, speaking at a ceremony where the pharma’s Managing Director, Nazmul Hassan, announced the new achievement.

Health Minister Mohammed Nasim also congratulated them, while US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat said it was “a testament to Beximco’s hard work as well as the quality of their products”.

She said receiving US FDA approval was a “long and rigorous” process.

“I am especially proud that US consumers will now be able to take a life-saving drug and see ‘made in Bangladesh’ on the bottle.”

We are unparalleled

Bangladesh’s burgeoning drug industry, after meeting local demand, exports in a number of countries including the European markets.

The export earning was Tk 3 billion annually five years ago. But last fiscal’s first three-quarters Tk 4 billion export mean it has surpassed the previous records.

Bangladesh can make generic drugs without any intellectual property rights until 2O33 as a Least Developed Country.

Adviser to the Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceuticals Industries Abdul Muktadir in the ceremony sought government’s support so that “we could take some of our manufacturing activities overseas”.

“We are unparalleled with technologies and human resources. No other developing countries have as much capability as Bangladesh has in making drugs.”

He said the export incomes would multiply several times with the opening of the US market.

Square Pharmaceuticals has also gained the US FDA’s approval, but is yet to start exports.

Last time I heard they were exporting Drugs to South American nations. Good for Beximco.

Good news for Bangladesh, but I think the minister is getting a bit carried away with his praise. Let's see how it does in US, which both highly regulated and competitive.

Of course the minister is getting carried away...it' what we Bengalis/Bangladeshis do best - EMOTIONS. We're either full of so much bravado it's nauseating or so full of self hate, it's pathetic

It's a tough market but, you've got to start from somewhere - regulations and standards are obviously the big hurdle, but I think price wise, Bangladeshi pharmas should be very competitive.

Congrats, US has very strict regulations on medicine being sold and its manufacturing process.
BD companies will certainly manufacture the medicines by strictly adhering to the US codes and standards.

Now is the time for Chinese and Indian pharma companies to invest in Bangladesh Pharma scene to export to the US and the EU markets.

Bangladesh can enter these markets with reverse engineered patented formulations while India and China cannot.

. .
That's indeed a major milestone for the pharmaceutical industry.

Good job Beximco! Square and Incepta must be taking note...

  1. The minister is known for being a bit off kilter and gets effusive easily. Some people think he lost his screws sometime ago.
  2. I've heard that BEXIMCO was trying to get FDA approval since late nineties. It has taken them twenty plus years which is quite a feat not only for local but also the subcontinent.
  3. FDA wants to bring prices down for generics but it is a heavily influenced/lobbied/lucrative market in the US with trillion dollar stakes. Think lucrative mental disease drugs, ZIKA drugs or AIDS drugs, all are now within reach and capability for these two Bangladeshi companies.
  4. There is scope for everyone to jump on the bandwagon - including Indian pharma majors like Ranbaxy....if Indian companies are smart they will tie up with Bangladeshi pharma companies and use this opportunity.

SQUARE does have FDA approval and will start exports soon. Incepta was trying for FDA approval for some time now.
