Bangladesh export to exceed $60 billion by 2021: Tofail

BD population is 160 million and its FY2016 export was US$34.2 billion. On the other hand the population of our neighboring country, India, is 1300 million and its 2016 export was US$270 billion. BD per capita export is US$213, whereas Indian per capita export is US$207.69. It seems our export per capita has already surpassed that of India. It will keep on going up, no doubt.

India is not a major exporting nation and never will be due to the substandard quality of Indian products. Their exports are also declining continuously for the last two years.

Kudos to this versatile land and it's versatile people.
Quite optimistic about BDs future development in spite of all odds , bribery, bureaucracy, corrupted politics and endless obstacles.
Salute you man...to my deshi....

Bangladesh has set a target to earn five billion US dollar in 2021 through exports from leather industry.

That's a bit unnecessary & also ill-informed. India exports high precision engineering goods, software, petrochemicals, machinery, cars, bikes & one of the most important Pharma products. Therefore calling Indian exports sub-standard is just plain lack of knowledge.

Would you also call Indian hospitals & prowess in medicine sub-standard. I've personally met & talked to so many B'deshis (i can speak bengali & also understand the sylheti dialect)in so many of the hospitals across the length and breadth of India. When we treat your people we are also exporting goodwill.

I will not get into the loop of calling B'desh's exports sub-standard or below the value chain. You guys are doing good. More power to you.

Be happy with what you are exporting like apparels, garments, knitwear & strive to move up the chain with varied goods. Don't jump & chest-beat at the 1st sign of success.

Peace.

Correct me if I'm wrong but won't pharma export dry up if we get promoted from LDC bracket? And relocation of tanneries might also impact leather export, will it not?

Moving away from a LDC status is years away if not decades. Pharma exports from B'desh though encouraging is nearly not enough to make any substantial difference to established players. It could change in the future though.

But, I didn't understand your point? Why will it dry up if you move out of LDC?

The top 15 countries are
  1. Germany: US$48.9 billion (15.2% of total drugs and medicines exports)
  2. Switzerland: $34.5 billion (10.7%)
  3. Belgium: $27.3 billion (8.5%)
  4. United States: $24.6 billion (7.7%)
  5. United Kingdom: $24.2 billion (7.5%)
  6. France: $22.7 billion (7%)
  7. Ireland: $21.8 billion (6.8%)
  8. Italy: $18.5 billion (5.8%)
  9. Netherlands: $15.7 billion (4.9%)
  10. India: $11.2 billion (3.5%)
  11. Spain: $8.2 billion (2.5%)
  12. Canada: $6.5 billion (2%)
  13. Sweden: $6 billion (1.9%)
  14. Singapore: $5.1 billion (1.6%)
  15. Austria: $4.9 billion (1.5%)
Among the above countries, the fastest-growing drugs and medicines exporters since 2011 were: Canada (up 62.5%), India (up 60.4%), Netherlands (up 25.9%) and Singapore (up 20.7%).

And relocation of tanneries might also impact leather export, will it not?

Moving out of LDC status will affect quotas and special trade advantages in EU and USA. Bangladesh - I'd argue - got out of real LDC status a long time ago, decades maybe. LDC status has been continued for trade advantage purposes.

However Bangladesh has other advantages in Pharma as well. Bangladesh is the one of the only countries that has assigned capability to duplicate patented drugs from the West and export all over the globe. India and China don't have this advantage. Pharma majors from India and China are present in Bangladesh for this reason.

.
In case of pharma , BD can manufacture and export patent drugs until 2033 according to WTO Doha agreement...

Chest-beating in this forum is not the primary domain of Bangladeshi members, with a few notable exceptions. :rolleyes1:

We're mostly a humble lot - I'd argue. You can hang out in the Bangladeshi section for a few weeks, you'll get it.

I'd say there are a lot of positive things happening in Bangladesh worth chest beating (other than garments), yet chest-beating is minimal. Some boasting is a reaction against some non-Bangladeshi religious nut-cases intent on proving Bangladesh as a basket-case. For what intent they only know.....

One thing we *do* chest-beat about is human development, such as gender-equality, women's education level and the lowest fertility rate in South Asia. And reach of public medicine/hygiene. And nutrition. Pretty impressive for a majority Muslim nation - of all things.

Those - you'll probably agree, are a lot better indicator of progress than achieving self-sufficiency in rifling of 155mm howitzers or making tank tracks. We'd rather feed our people than arm ourselves to the teeth.

And 'varied goods' production is already happening, but the focus is on mass-manufacturing for export utilizing unskilled and semi-skilled labor. Small electrics and electronics, shipbuilding, leather, pharma, ceramics, sanitaryware are all long-established export sectors locally.

Bangladesh is going to follow Taiwanese and Korean models of export-led development with low value addition at first, not try exporting high-value Engineering goods at this time. Too much competition. Plus we need to give jobs to the maximum number of people, skilled as well as unskilled. This will ensure a better society with lower income gap between rich and poor.

You can visit my posts in the 'Made in Bangladesh' thread to get some idea.

chest-beat
You overdid the chest-beat thingy! :woot:

hest-beat about is human development,
That is something that you guy's should be proud of & rightly so. Reduction in IMR in B'desh is something that all the other South Asian nations should try to emulate.

Good. As I said more power to you & your country.

Bangladesh is going to follow Taiwanese and Korean models of export-led development
All the best.

Don't count your chickens before they hatch!

FDA approval is one of the biggest hurdle for BD. It is already taken care of and you will see medicine export will increase many fold in coming years.

. .
Well, mere figures don't really matter much... What we currently need is expanding the export basket and move towards a diverse industrial sector... Our economy is still vulnerable to external shocks...

.
The Govt expects RMG exports to be even higher.
They expect 5Bn leather export by 2021 (Which is around 1Bn right now)
And 5Bn ICT export by 2021(Which is also around 1Bn now)
Maybe some increase in fishers and other stuff too.

Our export increased from 17Bn(in 2009) to 33.4Bn in 2016. If things are done right than 60Bn export doesn't seem impossible. Seems optimistic though. But than again you wouldn't want your commerce minister to be a pessimist.

Bangladesh has a huge fertile land ever gifted in the planet. They should also develop agricultural products and encourage FMCC companies to invest and use it

.
Exactly.
BD currently focusing on agro industries and food processing.
The growth of food processing industries is amazing
And value addition is excellent in agro products.
