Bangladesh enjoying real democracy: Pyatt
Bangladesh enjoying real democracy: Pyatt
The United States described present democracy in Bangladesh as real democracy and highly appreciated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's leadership in strengthening the democratic institutions.
This was stated by Geoffrey Pyatt, principal deputy assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs of USA, during a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office yesterday morning.
Geoffrey Pyatt said USA also appreciated the government initiatives and achievements in countering terrorism and establishing peace, said Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad.
In reply, the prime minister thanked USA and other friendly countries for their supports to restore democracy.
She said her party and the government want a strong and pro-people opposition in and outside the parliament. We want opposition party joins the parliament and play its role as a strong opposition, said Hasina.
The assistant secretary of state also expressed US President Barack Obama's keen interest to work closely with the countries of the South and South Eastern Asia for expediting economic emancipation.
As Geoffrey Pyatt eulogized Hasina's role in tackling the global climate change, the prime minister sought the US government's assistances for Bangladesh in this regard. The prime minister also sought increased US investment in Bangladesh. Pyarr assured her of continuing investment here in larger volume.
