Hey man, dont open up cricket threads in defence section, everything gets jumbled up.

Pls ask mods to shift this to members club or the cricket thread.

If they win today they can not loose the series. Bangladesh can defeat the current Pakistani team in tests. Good to see another team rising to a competetive level.

Tigers take 2-0 lead against NZ

Bangladesh is leading the five-match ODI series by 2-0 after beating New Zealand by seven wickets in the third one-day of the Micromax ODI Cup at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Monday.

The hosts reached their target in 40 overs, losing three wickets after opener Shahriar Nafees played a brilliant knock of 73 (73).

Nathan McCullum grabbed two wickets while Andy McKay took one.

Earlier, New Zealand were all out for only 173 runs in 42.5 overs depending on struggling batsman Ross Taylor, who scored the highest of 62 (72).

Bangladeshi bowler Suhrawadi Shuvo grabbed three wickets while Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah took two and Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam, and Abdur Razzak took one wicket each.

Earlier in the morning, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and invited Kiwis to bat.

The hosts beat New Zealand by 9 runs in the first ODI on October 5.

Bangladesh: Imrul Kayes, Shahriar Nafees, Junaid Siddique, Raqibul Hasan, Shakib Al Hasan (captain), Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah, Naeem Islam, Abdur Razzak, Shafiul Islam, Rubel Hossain.

Tigers clinch a cliffhanger
Fantastic Shakib show helps Bangladesh win Micromax Cup against Kiwis

The world cricket fraternity saw the emergence of a new Bangladesh yesterday, thanks to their talismanic captain Shakib Al Hasan who stood tall to rewrite the record books with a colossal all-round effort in the Tigers' historic series triumph over New Zealand at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

The players erupted in joy, in front of an electrifying crowd who braved the scorching heat and humid condition, once Rokibul Hasan held the catch of Kane Williamson, who stood in the way of Bangladesh and victory with a resolute 108, at deep midwicket off paceman Shafiul Islam.

This ensured the Tigers' nine-run victory in the nerve-wrecking fourth one-dayer of the five-match series and gave them a 3-0 lead against New Zealand, whose chase eventually ended at 232 in 49.3 overs in reply to the hosts' 241.

The hero of the match was none other than the world's number one all-rounder Shakib who almost single handedly took Bangladesh cricket to unparalleled heights. He scored a magnificent 106, his fifth ton, when the chips were down. And as if that was not enough, he then took the ball in his golden arm and claimed three crucial wickets to complete the Kiwi blushes. His efforts can be best described as an angel coming with a magic wand to heal the pains of a country where nothing seems working properly.

With this win the Tigers conquered new territory; a series victory against a top-flight, full strength opposition.

Shakib and company silenced the cynics who have expressed qualms about the ability of the Tigers with this magnificent performance against the Black Caps who have seen a different Bangladesh in their third visit to the country.

Previously, Bangladesh have won a few matches sparsely against the top opponents but this was the first time they dominated a series from the very first game and now they still retain the chance of a whitewash.

The morning however did not show the day for Bangladesh.

In-form opener Shahriar Nafees returned to the dressing room in the very second ball of the innings after New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori invited his opponents to bat, and the visitors tightened their grip on the home side reducing them to 44-3.

But Shakib had other plans as the left-hander joined opener Imrul Kayes to repair the early damages. He then got able support from Mahmudullah Riyad (37) and Mushfiqur Rahim (13) to take away the visitors' early initiative during his well-composed 113-ball 106 that contained eleven fours and a six. His fifth hundred helped Bangladesh to put up a fighting total of 241 before being bundled out in 48.1 overs.

Despite the classy effort from Shakib under trying conditions, Bangladesh were still twenty runs short of their target due to lack of fire in the finishing overs. They could manage only 40 runs from the last ten overs losing five wickets, but a disciplined bowling effort made sure the total could be defended.

And when Shakib's turn came to show something with the leather, the left-arm spinner did exactly what his team required to win the match as he finished as the most successful bowler with three for 54.

Pacer Shafiul claimed the two prize scalps of Brendon McCullum, who for successive second occasion was dismissed by the right-arm paceman for 21 runs, and Williamson but the dismissal of Grant Elliot was the turning point of the match as the right-hander shared a 70-run sixth wicket stand with Williamson after the visitors were reeling at 80-5.

Elliot (22) tried to paddle against a short length ball from Shakib but top edged high in the air and it was Abdur Razzak who took an excellent running catch which emulated the former Indian captain Kapil Dev's running catch in the 1983 World Cup final against West Indies.

Threat then came from Nathan McCullum (33) but fortune favoured the brave as a brilliant throw from the deep from substitute Naeem Islam hit the stumps directly to beat McCullum's effort. His dismissal also effectively killed the hopes of New Zealand to snatch victory from the Tigers.

Shakib took the ball in the very crucial 49th over when New Zealand needed 24 runs from the last two overs and McCullum silenced the partisan crowd by hitting a boundary in the very first ball. He then managed two runs from the very next delivery but Naeem broke the hearts by sending back McCullum and in the third delivery Daryl Tuffey was dismissed by Shakib which all but confirmed the Tigers' victory.

But requiring 16 runs from last six balls with one wicket in hand, Williamson, who batted with a runner from the middle of his innings, started brilliantly taking two runs from the first delivery of Shafiul and then hitting a boundary in the next ball. But in the third ball it was time for Shafiul to jump high and bring a smile on the faces of the million cricket lovers in the country.

Bangladesh beats New Zealand to clinch cricket series victory

DHAKA, Bangladesh — Bangladesh achieved an historic first cricket series win over a topflight side when it beat New Zealand by nine runs to win their one-day international series on Thursday with one game to go.

Skipper Shakib Al Hasan smashed a magnificent 106 to steer Bangladesh to 241 all out in 49 overs, then took 3-54 to help dismiss New Zealand for 232 with three balls to spare at Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

The victory in the fourth one-dayer gave Bangladesh an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

Until this series, Bangladesh had beaten New Zealand only once in any international cricket match, and never won more than two consecutive games against the Test-playing teams.

"I think we have played great cricket throughout the series," Shakib told the cricinfo website. "We have shown great character."

New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori was gracious in defeat.

"Bangladesh have played better cricket than us and deserved the victory," Vettori said. "They have shown us how to play in these conditions."

Kane Williamson looked like leading the Black Caps to the must-win with a patient 108, a maiden one-day century that included six boundaries and two sixes. He and Grant Elliott restored their team's hopes from 80-5.

Elliott finally fell for 22 in the 37th over top-edging a sweep off Shakib, and the following batsmen failed to support Williamson, who became hampered when he injured his hamstring.

Williamson was finally last out, caught by Raqibul Hassan off a Shafiul Islam delivery. New Zealand's last three wickets went for just seven runs.

New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first, a decision which paid dividends early when Bangladesh was reduced to 97-4.

Shakib took charge and his 106 runs came off only 113 balls and included 11 boundaries and one six.

He accumulated half-century stands with opener Imrul Kayes (37), Mushfiqur Rahim (13) and Mahmudullah (37) before he was caught and bowled by Vettori in the 43rd over at 261-6.

"Williamson batted well. I think I batted sensibly and didn't take too many risks," Shakib said. "But I do need to work on my bowling as I haven't bowled as well as I would have liked."

New Zealand medium-pacer Hamish Bennett took 3-44 on debut.

The final game is scheduled for Sunday.

Bangladesh could not even play with full strength against NZ. Tamim and Mushraffe out due to injury. I hope they get better before world cup, especially Tamim. We need his aggressive batting.

Hell we won anyway..... :victory:

I am expecting a redefine Bangladesh team in World Cup. :smokin:

although Tamim is a daring batsmen and I would say the only striking batsman alongwith Shakib but perhaps it was a good experiment for Bangladesh as they clinched their first ever Series win against New Zeland? if I am not wrong? as i haven't witnessed this moment before

They did win another series couple of months back but not against NZ right?

Thats really good to see improving team of Bangladesh and hope you guyz surprise everybody by winning World Cup 2011 and don't keep an eye on T-20 World Cup then  thats belong to us

It's a humour piece not to be taken seriously!

Bangladesh to rest entire team for 5th ODI against minnows New Zealand

Dhaka, Bangladesh. In an action packed press conference at the end of the fourth ODI at Mirpur, Bangladesh captain Shakib-al-Hasan announced that the entire Bangladesh team would be rested for the 5th and final ODI against New Zealand. Bangladesh has already won the 5 match series by winning three out of the four games played till now with one match abandoned due to rains.

“We have lots of important cricket coming up. There is the Kai Altech Premier T20 league and ACC matches against Malaysia and Kenya. Given the amount of cricket the boys have been playing, we want to protect them from injury and keep them fresh for these important engagements,” Bangladeshi captain said.

“Also, with all due respect to Dan and his boys, it is really hard to keep yourself motivated against a mediocre opposition. Keeping all this mind, we have decided to rest the main Bangladesh team for the final game. We do recognize our commitments to Cricket New Zealand and will ensure that they get a great game of cricket. West Bangladesh will be playing instead of our first eleven in the final ODI at Dhaka,” Shakib-al-Hasan informed as people googled frantically for “West Bangladesh”.

After winning the ODI series convincingly, Bangladeshi cricketers suddenly realized that they had enough of it already

Given the complex geo-political history of the region, it is not entirely clear what “West Bangladesh” refers to. At the time this report was filed, at least 4 different teams had claimed responsibility for being the aforesaid West Bangladesh team – the West Bengal Ranji team, Kolakata Knight Riders of the IPL, Pakistan national team, and Afghanistan national team – all had promptly issued press releases or tweeted confirmations that they were West Bangladesh.

“Ideal match practice before tough Ranji season,” Laxmi Ratan Shukla, West Bengal Ranji captain said, becoming the first one to lay claim over West Bangladeshdom.

“Still trying to convince Cricket NZ to pay us $200,000 so that McCullum can play for them,” tweeted @iamsrk i.e. Shah Rukh Khan, owner of the KKR team, which was replied to and retweeted by many, including a certain @shreerammadras who tagged every other celebrity in his replies to @iamsrk.

“RT @shreerammadras: OMG IPL team to finally play international cricket. @LalitKModi you are vindicated. N Srini is a moron,” was retweeted by Lalit Modi, the suspended IPL commissioner and a voracious retweeterer.

“Finally cricket will take place in Pakistan (Bangladesh was earlier East Pakistan). This is a big moment for Pakistan,” Shahid Afridi, captain of Pakistani cricket team said, further adding a caveat that if their team loses the final ODI against New Zealand, “law of averages” should be blamed instead of any “match-fixing”.

“We have been asking for test playing nations to play against Afghanistan for a while, but we were really hoping for someone better than New Zealand,” Hamid Hasan, Afghanistan paceman said, who claimed he had “mixed reactions” over the news, though his team-mates expressed enthusiasm.

“I am really looking forward to the game. I am the only player who plays for 3 of the 4 contending West Bangladesh teams. I can lay a claim to Pakistan, KKR and given the nebulous northwestern boundaries, Afghanistan,” said Mohammed Irfan, tallest cricketer with a confused sense of identity that characterizes cricket today.

In an unrelated confusion during the press conference, the question “How does it feel to be the best batsman, left-arm spin bowler, and only international caliber player in the team that you also happen to captain?” was simultaneously answered by both Shakib-al-Hasan and Daniel Vettori.

NZ media take swipe at their cricketers
Staff Correspondent

New Zealand media took a swipe at their cricket team on Friday after they had lost three consecutive matches to Bangladesh in the ongoing five-match one-day series.

With the World Cup cricket just five months away, the media urged their fans not to expect anything from the Black Caps, who, according to them, hit their lowest point in the Bangladesh series.

It is pretty disappointing for cricket followers who are keen to see New Zealand step up,・former New Zealand cricketer John Morrison was quoted by New Zealand Herald as saying.

New Zealand media put the result in the same bracket with their defeat against South Africa (5-0 in 2000/01), Pakistan (5-0 in 2003/04) and Australia (5-0 2004/05).

Statistically, the three series were their worst ever but the media said they were matched with the current slump of the Black Caps given the strength and ranking of opponents Bangladesh.

It is shaping up as one of the worst ever because Bangladesh is so lowly rated,・said New Zealand Herald in its report.

Almost all the established batsmen in the international cricket, the likes of Brendon McCullum, Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder have not performed well in this series and that is, the media said, a big concern for them.

The response from the Black Caps was all too familiar, leaving even the players themselves shaking their heads as the top order hit the self destruct button,・said a web portal called 3news in its report.

The skipper Daniel Vettori痴 record as a captain is not as glories as it could be as well as his performance in this series ・68 one day internationals, won 36 of them and lost 25.

I dont think it is the coming of age of Bangladesh really, it is pretty disappointing how our side is playing. Sure Bangladesh slow the pitches down but that happens in most countries, that is the reality, former cricketer Morrison told Herald.

Sportal, another web portal, commented in its report: For too long they [Kiwis] have under-performed and they have lacked the mental hardness which lets opposing sides know that when they are up against New Zealand they are in for a run for their money. After the 3-0 loss in Bangladesh, with one more to be played, the World Cup on the sub-continent in March next year suddenly looks a long, long way away,・said Sportal.

Tigers・final match not merely formality
Staff Correspondent

Bangladesh, already assured of the series win with a 3-0 lead, will go into the fifth and final one-day international match against New Zealand on Sunday with the prospect moving to the eighth position in the one-day rankings of the International Cricket Council.

The Tigers, currently ninth in the ladder, began the series with 53 rating points and three wins in the first four matches pushed up their tally to 64, the ICC said on Friday.

They are now only three points shy of West Indies, who have held the eighth position for many days. Another win in the fifth match will add three points to the Tigers・tally making them level with the Caribbeans.

Its means the final match has no longer remained as a formality for Bangladesh, who are now basking in the glory after confirming their first series victory against serious opponents with Thursday's nine-run win.

The eighth place in the ranking is just not a number but also crucial for Bangladesh to regain their entry into the cash-rich ICC Champions Trophy.

Only top eight teams now get the chance to play in the lucrative tournament, regarded as the second best one-day competition after the World Cup. Bangladesh played in the competition last in England in 2005.

The ICC recently decided that from 2015 only top 10 teams will get the chance to play in the World Cup, which gave the one-day ranking an added significance.

The wins in the first three matches also took Bangladesh to a safe distance from number 10th team Ireland, who have only 39 points to their credit.

The series also took its toll on New Zealand, who began the series with a chance to move into fourth position, but now facing the bleak prospect of going down to the seventh position

A Bangladesh win over on Sunday will put the Kiwis behind Pakistan to the seventh, only ahead of West Indies and Bangladesh among the current Test playing nations.
