Dhaka, Bangladesh (CNN) -- A Bangladeshi university teacher was convicted Wednesday of wishing death to the prime minister on his Facebook wall.

The Bangladesh High Court handed down a six-month sentence to M Ruhul Amin on a contempt charge, saying he failed to comply with a court order after his remarks on Facebook, said deputy attorney general ABM Altaf Hossain.

Amin, who teaches Information Technology at Jahangirnagar University and is in Australia on a study leave, was not available for comment.

Hossain said Amin was tried in absentia.

After the August road accident death of Tareq Masud, a leading filmmaker in Bangladesh, Amin used his Facebook status to blame the government's negligence for many deaths in road accidents. He also wished death to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the court said.

Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Jahangir Hossain asked the government to take measures to bring Amin back from Australia so he can be jailed.

The court also asked the university to take action against Amin.

Bangladesh state transport authorities estimate up to 4,000 people every year die in road accidents. Independent researchers say they believe the actual number of deaths is much higher.

I guess Awami League has never heard of the term 'freedom of speech'. Hell, there are kinds of $hit against Obama on the Internet, you don't see anyone bitching about

.
It is expected from a regime that has its roots in bakshal. Freedom of speech is non-existent in
Awami dictionary as according to them you only have the freedom to praise S.Mujib. Hasina's vision is to make BD the next N.Korea.

It was interesting to note that during Sheikh Mujib's reign, he banned many media outlets.

Well that was 1972 and the socio-economic condition is different now. But you can see that she is in total control of the media
outlets. How many times do you see people like Mahmudur Rahman invited in TV talk shows. Hasina's only hope & best bet is
that Dada INDIA will come to her rescue in the next election(if she allows any election)

Under what basis did Mujib ban media outlets? I'd say it was rather unjustified.

Frankly, I think another 1/11 is inevitable. Whatever Joy is doing against the military is extremely dangerous considering the volatile nature of the politics of Bangladesh.

I'd suggest not to use the term Dada India, that'll attract trolls

Have you guys actually read the news? The person concerned received 6 months jail for contempt of court, must have done something to piss off the judge.

The jail term is not because what he did in facebook, if that was the case all of would have been ******* in jail.

He shouldnt have been endited in the first place.

Yea you are right. i read in local news paper this too that he was sentence to jail for contempt of court . but I think the court decision may have a link to wishing dead for PM too .

He shouldnt have been hauled to court in the first place. Btw, why was the gov stalking him on facebook anyway???

One party rule.

It's obvious that courts are government-controlled. What would we expect?

We expect them to respect our privacy on facebook. The guy was speaking his mind, that does not mean they can haul him to court, more or less stalk him(creepy).

Any way BAL should stalk us in pdf, the whole bd lot will end up in jail

The supreme court of Bangladesh is fully controlled by the government, no justice is served there.

Bro, it's common sense. It's already a known fact among Bangladeshis regardless of rich or poor.

There is no such thing as privacy laws in Bangladesh.

PDF? I doubt if they have the brains or the organization to track us down. And besides, PDF servers are based in the US.

You see many who speak out against US here (at times extreme), but no harm on them.
