What's new

Bangladesh Coast Guard to get five ships.

.
As long as Hasina remain in power, you can rest assure that Bangladesh will never ever do anything that is remotely discomfortable to India no matter what India do.

So buying the two Chinese subs was comfortable for India? :what:

Appeasing the Bangladesh's armed forces is Hasina's 2nd priority after appeasing India. But she is walking in a tight rope. She had to make sure that her govt. has perpetual Indian blessings and that blessings are not jeopardized by acquiring real hard power. 2nd, Bangladesh's armed Forces are not pissed at her. She has learned lessons from her father's mistake of neglecting Armed Forces and bringing danger.

She will do some toothless purchases like buying training aircrafts for Air Forces or obsolete Submarine for Navy or increasing salary of armed forces personnel to keep them happy. She will not do anything to upset the India's overwhelming dominance over Bangladesh in military matters. That's why her govt. is reducing defence budget as a percentage of GDP every year and doing some hogwash to fool the public that she really care about Bangladesh's independence and sovereignty. She will keep a small and content armed forces geared at looking job opportunity at UN missions.

I agree that Hasina's "token" approval of buying a pair of the Ming subs was a typical small gesture to the Navy (these subs - though refurbished before purchase, were made operationally obsolete in most navies years ago, including the Indian Navy).

"Token" this and "token" that, that is all she will do to keep the armed forces Generals and Admirals in-line.

The Turkish Rocketsan delivery of the TRG-300 Kaplan Multiple Launch Rocket System to Bangladesh Army was also another "token" gesture in June, 2021.

The Mings can barely make it out of the harbor - but I assume they are fine as training platforms. Having our "nabiks" trained on this as a capability was a dire need of the day.

Indian diplomats bed-wetting on TV shows in India about the Mings was also a "shajano natok". They have an old Indian Navy Russian Ming-equivalent preserved in Chennai beach-walk since 1990 I believe. Been there once.

Every navy person worldwide knows that having these two token subs is maybe better than having none, but ideally we need at least two (ideally four) AIP and missile-launcher equipped modern subs made in the last two/three years. Comparing this situation in Pakistan, most folks asking this question will get their answer about what we should have.

But this is off topic for the thread. I think maybe we should talk about what new capability (for their fleet) BCG will need and will be getting.

Of course getting the subs and Roketsan's MBRL with 400 TRG-300 300mm missiles and unknown amount of TRG-230 missiles were "token" purchase. 🤣 Didn't know Indian reaction for the sub were "shajano natok".

Such dedication in acting that India gave away a Kilo sub to Myanmar for free to convince us that they are really upset. 😂 So that's why our women love Indian serial, eh? 😆 @Joe Shearer Sherlock-ফেলুদার ভাইপো তো সব বুইঝা ফেলসে। 🤣 Such a genius, wonder how he sleeps at night with that enormous brain. 😂

Because defence is the lowest priority for Bangladesh govt.
Appeasing the Bangladesh's armed forces is Hasina's 2nd priority after appeasing India.

Thought you said defence is the lowest priority now it's suddenly 2nd priority after India? You're not making much sense.

Creating new story, eh? How did Mujib neglect Armed Forces? Did he decommission new frigates or locally built first patrol craft or did he try to sell the Mig-21 we got from Russia, the third best fighter we ever had which was even better than IAF's Mig that time?

She will keep a small and content armed forces geared at looking job opportunity at UN missions.

Weird way to keep a small and content armed forces by creating new divisions, brigade, battalions, new cantonment, bases and getting new equipment. :undecided: Max 8k military members are working in UN and foreign countries, lets suppose 10k military members are working abroad. Then how do you expect 217000 members (small?) to find job in UN. You're gonna pay and lobby for them? :what:

You do realize that there's still scope for new MRCA and sub, right? What will you say when we get them? They are actively trying to get new MRCA for a sometime if we didn't face trouble multiple times we would've gotten them already.

They just inducted the dedicated sub base few months ago. Ctg base wasn't really suitable to keep sub, now with the base there's chance to procure at least two new subs. BN got what it could afford back then and Ming subs are primarily for training and coastal patrol.

Btw BN was trying to get since 80s, naval stand-off with Myanmar only pushed them further to get them. Nothing to do with dumb type of thinking that Hasina is keeping them happy with "obsolete" submarine.

I will just butt in on this point. I will let @Homo Sapiens respond to the rest.

Mujib's undermining of armed forces was through the building of a parallel force - the Rakhkhi Bahini not because there wasn't defence procurement. You are right we did have state of the art equipment during his time despite our limited ability. We just saw in Russia what happens when you have a parallel military force with your conventional military. One of the parties are going to become aggrieved eventually.

Hasina has not walked that same path like her father. But at the same time, she did put her loyalists in the Army officer corp irrespective of their ability. This weakens the morale of the military. Fancy new toys won't mean much if you lose the mentality and attitude that distinguished us from our adversary. For reference - look at BDR (BGB) pre and post mutiny. Quality Leadership is crucial for any armed force. And military leaders cannot tow the party line and yet be effective in serving Bangladesh's best interest.

PS:

I had always been amongst those that believed Hasina is playing the balancing game and had been giving her the benefit of doubt. I defended Hasina in various occasions in the past citing the new procurements for military. But lately my thoughts have changed because of the very reason I put up above.

To further illustrate my point - Arab nations today have far superior military ability than what they had in 60s and 70s. Yet, today they aren't able to fight Israel because they no longer have the mentality to do so from the top. Hence we see them normalizing relations with Israel, putting Palestinians under the bus.

Leadership and attitude is that important. You can render an army useless just by paralyzing that.

The govt. should buy at least two MPA's from Germany for our Coast Guard which will boost their surveillance capability over our maritime zone.

Buying a few MRLS while consistently decreasing defence budget as a percentage of national budget and GDP, which has a long-term and deeper impact on Bangladesh's military capability? Of course all countries in the world are modernizing their armed forces at varying degree. Real question would be, whether Bangladesh have reduced it's military power gap with neighbors in the last decade even slightly? I don't think so. Power gap with those countries increased farther. Even Pakistan with dire economic situation done much better than Bangladesh at modernizing their armed forces. While Bangladesh despite enjoying a decade of good economic growth did nothing to increase the real capability. Some eyewash like MRLS or obsolete submarines is all to show for. Those obsolete submarines are already 6 years in our Navy. Does govt. even initiated any deal to replace those in with newer capable submarine? do not expect any new submarine before 2030s even if that materialize and not get stuck like our legendary MRCA procurement.

You are counting trees while not realizing the forest is shrinking gradually.

Armed forces did not get even clothes in that time, while Rakkhi Bahini was prioritized for all sorts of benefits. If USSR had not gifted those 12 Mig-21 and Egypt 30 T-55 Tanks, our Armed Forces would have been a total non entity.

The mods usually delete off topic posts - which they have in this case, as requested. My hats off to @waz, @WebMaster bhais and other mods.

Per forum rules, I believe locking threads only happens when mudslinging or a chance of the same occurs. But the mods and @WebMaster bhai always have the last word.

The whole off topic comment exchange started when we brought up the Aircraft carrier and blue-water Navy discussion, which itself is off-topic for a Coast Guard discussion. :-)

Coast Guard has no role in defending our sovereignty or territorial waters. It chases/apprehends smugglers, pirates and fish thieves or alerts the Navy when it sees foreign Navies escort foreign oil exploration vessels in our waters, which happened with the Burmese Navy a few years ago. Needless to say - the Burmese turned tail and ran back to their port.

If the mods have no qualms - we can keep discussing Coast Guard related topics in this thread, e.g. what we have and what we need. Such as the recent post about new Turkish OPVs to be made in Bangladesh locally,
This was such a weird discussion so far. Some of the fiery posts written by people who don't have a clue about what they are talking about were bemusing. Seriously?

Best to stick to basics.
