Bangladesh Coast Guard (East Zone) seized nine lakh yaba pills worth Tk45 crore from a boat abandoned by smugglers in Naf River in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar.
A patrol team led by Commander Lieutenant Nafiur Rahman noticed a boat within the maritime boundary of Bangladesh Tuesday night and chased it.
Sensing the presence of coast guards, the drug peddlers fled anchoring the boat on the shore of the Naf. Later, coast guard members recovered the contraband pills from the boat.
Lt Commander Julhas Faysal of Bangladesh Coast Guard (East Zone) has confirmed the incident.
According to the Department of Narcotics Control, yaba is being smuggled into the country from Myanmar. The pills are manufactured in some 40 factories along Myanmar border. The smugglers prefer waterways to land routes to avoid encounters with law enforcers.
Law enforcers said the smugglers consider waterways ‘less risky’ and cheaper for transporting the contraband pills as strong vigilance is at place at different points on land routes.
Eh,Myanmar was caught ( illegally ) exporting its chief export product aka yaba.
