State minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam on Thursday said the social condition of Bangladesh was not in favour of same sex marriages.
Speaking at a dialogue between human rights organisations and the government on implementation of recommendations from Universal Periodic Review, he said certain recommendations could never be adopted in certain countries.
‘There are certain values in certain societies that the government has to keep in mind in running it,’ said Shahriar.
Referring to the UPR recommendation of abolition of death penalty, he said that it would not help maintaining law and order in Bangladesh.
‘These recommendations cannot be implemented in Bangladesh in near future,’ said Shahriar.
LGBTQ rights and death penalty abolition are two of some of the UPR recommendations Bangladesh never agreed to implement.
Human Rights Forum Bangladesh organised the dialogue at CIRDAP auditorium in the morning with the UN Human Rights Council slated to hold its regular working group session on UPR in September.
Bangladesh is supposed to submit a report on implementation of the recommendations it agreed to implement in the country in the last general session four and half years ago.
Article 19 director Tahmina Rahman said deteriorating status of freedom of expression subjected Bangladesh to a growing call from UN member states to respect people’s opinion and to implement the recommendation that were made in the previous general session held in 2013.
National Human Rights Commission chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque, HRFB convener Sheepa Hafiza, and Nagarik Udyog chief executive Zakir Hossain participated in the dialogue.
