President Abdul Hamid has "signed the paper appointing the new chief justice," a Bangabhaban presidential palace spokesman told PTI.

A Law Ministry statement said 64-year-old Sinha would take over on January 17, as present Chief Justice Muzammel Hossain will retire on January 16.

Sinha was the senior most judge in the apex Appellate Division of the Supreme Court after Hossain.

Unitary Bangladesh's Supreme Court comprises two divisions - the Appellate Division and the High Court division.

Justice Sinha is known for a number of landmark judgments including those on the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the 5th and 13th amendments to the constitution.

He obtained LLB, enrolled as an advocate of the district court, Sylhet in 1974 and practiced in that court. He conducted sessions trial cases independently till end of 1977.

Then he enrolled as an advocate of the High Court and the Appellate Division in 1978 and 1990 respectively.

He was appointed as judge of the High Court in 1999 and as judge of the Appellate Division in 2009.

Going by the information available on net, Justice Sinha seems to be a man of great repute and integrity. As the article mentions he has presided over several landmark judgements and is also associated with War trials of 1971, an emotional issue i assume for a lot of Bangladesh citizens.
I hope he proves to be a tough task master, considering the way how democracy works in sub-continent, Strong and honest judiciary is the only hope of common citizens.

Actually one of the newspaper posted the same news with headline as A Hindu appointed as CJ in Bangladesh (our usual BS media tricks), finally found this better balanced article who portrays him as deserving person.

Well we don't appoint people based on their religion. It happens in India only (apart from the figurehead ex-president).
Btw, BD hindus hate India too. All my hindu friends and teachers back in BD did. Stop taking our water, a$$holes. :)
Haven't you heard about Muh mein Ram Bagal mein Churi? They will say whatever you like but deep down we know how they feel.
