Revelations made by Abu Jundal to his interrogators have reinforced fears that the Lashkar-e-Taiba has permeated multiple layers of administration in Bangladesh.
Sharing snatches of Jundals confession, a senior crime branch official said that after the LeT man escaped from the
anti-terrorism squad (ATS) during an operation at Aurangabad on May 9, 2006, he took a train to Kolkata. On his arrival at the Sialdah railway station, Jundal was received by a suspected LeT operative, identified as Saukat.
The official said Jundal told his interrogators that Saukat had arranged his stay in Kolkata for a day before they crossed the Indo-Bangladesh border a couple of days later. Here, Saukats contacts in the border forces of Bangladesh ensured the duo a safe entry without any valid documents. It may be recalled that Jundal was carrying no personal identification documents at the time of his escape from Aurangabad.
The officer said Jundal was made to stay in Bangladeshs capital Dhaka for the next couple of days before being put on a flight to Karachi on May 16, 2006.
At the Dhaka airport, he was given a ticket in the name of Saeed to board a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight to Karachi, the official said adding, although LeTs collusion with the ISI is believed to have facilitated Jundals flight to Pakistan, what is intriguing is the fact as to how Jundal could pass the immigration screening at the Dhaka airport without any valid identification documents?
Joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy refused to comment on Jundals disclosure. It will not be appropriate on my part to speak on the subject, Roy said.
