Bangladesh abstains in UNGA vote over Ukraine issue​

The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday overwhelmingly adopted a resolution that demanded Russia to stop aggression on Ukraine and immediately withdraw from the country, in a powerful rebuke of Moscow’s Ukraine invasion by the global body charged with peace and security.
After more than two days of extraordinary debate, 141 out of 193 member states voted for the non-binding resolution, according to Agence France-Presse.

The United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and most of the European countries supported the resolution.
Bangladesh, China, Cuba, India, Iran, Iraq, Namibia, Pakistan, Senegal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Vietnam and Zimbabwe were among the 35 countries which abstained in the vote, while five members – Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea and Syria— voted against it, according to UN documents.
The resolution deplored the Ukraine invasion ‘in the strongest terms’ and condemned president Vladimir Putin’s decision to put his nuclear forces on alert.

Participating in the debate on Tuesday, Bangladesh emphasised the need for maintaining respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine in line with the obligations stipulated in the UN charter.

Bangladesh deputy permanent representative to the United States in New York Md Monwar Hossain said this in a statement in a debate on the Ukraine situation at the UN General Assembly.

‘Bangladesh believes that the obligations stipulated in the Charter of the United Nations regarding prohibition of use of force, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and peaceful settlement of international disputes must be complied with in all circumstances, without exception,’ he said.

Bangladesh also expressed grave concern at the situation in Ukraine and called for immediate cessation of the ongoing hostilities and military operations in the Ukrainian territory.

Bangladesh called for restraint by all parties and to immediately resume diplomatic efforts and dialogue in order to settle all disputes by peaceful means.

Ok, Russia supoorted Myanmar over BD in 2017 when it could have abstained but overall I think it was the right thing to do.

Russians did a lot to facilitate the independence of BD, provided economic and military assistance after 1971 and to this day are important to BD in terms of nuclear power and military equipment.

The West is showing massive hypocrisy as they did far worse things in Iraq and Libya and also ignore and even facilitate the suffering of the Palestinians and Kashmiris.

Putin has gone too far and should have maybe just incorported the Russian speaking part of Eastern Ukraine and then left Ukraine alone.

All understood. But do we have a dog in this fight? There are lots of groups of thugs in the world, not our job to "show a stand" now.

Our showing a stand will only hurt our own interests.

I say, do like the Korean and the Japanese. Stay neutral and sell things to everyone. That way our people get to eat and have clothes on their backs.

Principles are for superpowers, we should concentrate on dollars and cents. Simpler things.

Yup, currency swap deal will be the solution. Indonesia has also made this deal with so many countries.

I think this situation will make Non Western ally countries speed up the process of effort to minimize the dependency to Western system in term of international trade and financing.

Yup, the Russian bombing over Syria is the reason the rebels lost from the Assad Dictators.

Assad will face his God after his death and as Syrian leader he should act like Soeharto of Indonesia during 1998 to avoid civil war, but instead he wants to remain in power and killing other Muslims with his war.

International diplomacy is not always a one-way street. Neither it is black and white.

For BD, Ukraine issue falls in the gray zone because we depend also upon Russia.

Who gives a crap about what russians have done in other countries, not our issue.

There are many dimention to BDs vote.

Russians are building the roupour nuclear power plant which is at a critical stage. They were complete arse about the rohingya debacle but mature politics does not get hung up on past disagreement or agreement. Everything needs to considered on a point by point basis. Nothing must gepordise this multi billion dollar investment critical for future energy security and economic growth.

BD votes needs to be earned and should not be given away lightly. BD not simply following US is indication that BD makes choices for itself. It a sign that BD wont be joining the Quad on US dictat. Even better that India and China both took a neutral stand which gave us cover and validated our position.

We buy agri products from Ukraine and so this situation has some negative connotations for us. If we voted yes/no only then we would have chosen a side. Voting neutral leaves our cordial and transactional relationship with Ukraine intact.

BD remaining neutral was a considered act to futher BDs position. It was not an act of laziness or kowtowing to russians in any way.
