Bangla Language Movement in Sylhet

Tamil and Malayalam are two state language spoken by the people of different state in India with each having an impressive literature and media usage behind them. On the other hand most people in Sylhet and Bangladesh as a whole consider Sylheti is a local dialect of Bangla. I am now living in Sylhet for almost 8 years and I can tell you, with the exception of some internet jerk anybody in Sylhet doesn't no that they are speaking anything other than Bangla albeit in local form.There is no local newspaper circulation or books written in Sylheti dialect.All use standard Bangla and educated Sylheti are increasingly abandoning speaking in it and adopting standard form.

There is no measurable movement among the Sylheti to achieve recognition of their dialect as a full fledged language separated from Bangla, and International mother's language day is observed here in the same scale and with the same zeal as any other place of BD.So don't listen and get the wrong impression from some loony Sylheti diaspora sitting in UK.

Well the links between Tamil and Malayalam are more deep and there is debate as to what the real differences are or are they just a transitional larger language (far greater differences are often called just one language - look at Spanish and Italian for example). I can understand most malayalis quite well and vice versa. The mutual intelligibility is very high.

I have just heard from many sylheti speakers that they consider their language to be different enough from Bengali to be more than just a dialect.

It is difference of opinion in the end....just like how Tamils and Malayalis also sometimes have a squabble about it.

if bengali and sylheti are not mutually intelligible then sylheti is a separate language.
there is no definite criteria to determine what is a dialect and what is a separate language.. all languages must have branched off as dialects in the beginning... in case of sylheti, it did not get enough isolation and political backing to make it to league of separate language, yet. If the political power center remains in dhaka, its more likely that sylheti will get diluted with bengali words.
assamese and oriya have lot of similarity with bengali, without political backing they would be called dialects of bengali now(if power center remained in Kolkata)

Issues are made by earlier UK Sylheti migrants who couldnt catch up with pace of mainstream population back home. And earlier generation who were mostly outside of Bengal administration illiterate bunch. Not understanding the fact language evolves and keeps pace with other. Whatever floats your boat,it's all political,any sane and logical minded person would understand it.
Your GREAT Bengali language was once a dialect,the way some of you act feels like it was born out of scratch,in reality,it came from the ancient Indian languages like Magadhi Prakrit,Pali,Sanskrit(european+arab+persian) etc.The same group of languages where thousands of other languages evolved,and Sylheti is one of them.

there is some standards you have to fullfill as hinduguy mentioned two of those points, to be considered as a different language. Those standards decides which one is a language and which one is a dialect and Shyleti is a dialect by every sense.It's Sociolinguistics 101.And I say that as an expert in this field. I think years of study,field survey and research has established this point without any doubt.

If still anyone wants to believe otherwise, they are free to do so. Even my granny dosen't believe a health problem called 'high blood pressure' exists.To her it's 'jiner achor' which keeps her sick.
