After several rounds of delays, the launch of the Bangabandhu satellite has been set for May 10, says Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission chief Shahjahan Mahmood.

“Tests for the Bangabandhu satellite’s launch have been completed,” he told bdnews24.com on Monday.

“Everything seems to be ready. SpaceX has assured us that it will be launched on May 10, at 4am (Eastern Standard Time).

Bangabandhu Satellite-1 will be orbited in the upcoming days from Cape Canaveral, using a SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.

With this historical first satellite, Bangladesh inhabitants will have access to a wide range of broadcast and communications services, including phone services, backhaul, radio, direct-to-home TV and Internet.

Once Bangabandhu satellite-1 is operational, Bangladesh will be autonomous in terms of telecommunications and Broadcasting services, being able to offer communications services to many foreign countries such as Nepal, Myanmar or Bhutan under its coverage area.

Designed to reduce the country digital divide not only in big cities but also rural areas, Bangabandhu Satellite-1 is a major step towards space technology in Bangladesh.

Built on the new-generation Spacebus 4000B2 platform from Thales Alenia Space, Thales Alenia Space is prime contractor for the turnkey system, in charge of the design, construction, testing and in-orbit delivery of the satellite.

Its coverage area includes Bangladesh and surrounding regions. Positioned at 119.1° East, the system will provide Ku-band coverage for Bangladesh and its territorial waters in the Bay of Bengal, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Indonesia. It will also provide C-band capacity for the entire region.

The 3.7-tonne satellite, built by Thales Alenia Space, a France-based satellite company, was supposed to be launched in December. But the date has been deferred several times due to inclement weather and technical reasons.

Thales Alenia Space is also responsible for a complete ground segment, which capitalizes on SpaceOps applications, dedicated to mission configuration/monitoring and on Thales Alena Space’s SpaceGate comprehensive solution dedicated to end users applications. The ground segment relies on both Primary and the secondary ground facilities including a building that houses the satellite operation and control center and network operations center. The company’s local partner in Bangladesh, Spectra Engineers Ltd, is in charge of civil engineering works for the ground infrastructures.

The video link has been gotten from the Daily Star news.

The video-stream is streaming replay of the Insight MARS Lander launch from Vandenburg AFB in the West Coast. Launch for Bangabandhu-1 will be on time as indicated from Cape Canaveral, Fla. Praying to Allah SWT for a safe and uneventful launch...

Launch aborted a little after T minus 1 minute (when Falcon-9 computers took over in startup mode). Launch rescheduled to tomorrow at 5:47 PM EDT (Florida time).

There was a 50/50 chance that this would happen and it did. However much better to have discover faults prior to liftoff and abort at launchpad than after launch when you really have no choice but to deliberately destroy the launch vehicle (as well as the satellite itself) over the ocean.

The ground station for Bangabandhu-1 in Gazipur says it has received test signals from Bangladesh’s first satellite

Satellite operations engineer Tajul Islam told bdnews24.com on Saturday that they received the signal an hour and 10 minutes after SpaceX launched a rocket carrying the satellite into orbit from the US early on Friday.

It would take seven to nine more days for the satellite to reach its designated place, Tajul said.

“There is no problem until now. Everything is going on smoothly,” he added.

An upgraded version of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket blasted off at 2:14am on Friday on a mission to take the satellite into its orbit and the Bangabandhu-1 reached the geostationary transfer orbit around 33 minutes after the launch.

Three ground stations in the US, Italy and South Korea were supposed to take control of the satellite initially.

A 32-strong workforce is ready at the Gazipur ground station to take control of the satellite after around two more months.

Bangladesh has also built a backup ground station in Rangamati to operate the satellite.
