New Delhi: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will arrive this week in India, one of the largest contributors of peacekeeping troops to the world body, against the backdrop of a new effort to find agreement on reforming the United Nations Security Council, the global high table at which India is hoping to find a permanent seat.

Ban’s 26-29 April trip includes stops in New Delhi and Mumbai, foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said on Tuesday. In New Delhi, Ban will be hosted by foreign minister S.M. Krishna. In Mumbai, he will attend an event hosted by industrialist Mukesh Ambani, who is a member of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG) advocacy group.

The MDG—adopted by UN member states in the year 2000 and set to be achieved by 2015 —provide benchmarks for tackling world problems ranging from eradicating extreme hunger to combating HIV/AIDS and other diseases.

This will be Ban’s third visit to India since assuming the UN top job in 2007. It comes at a time when the country is aspiring to become a veto-wielding permanent member in a revamped Security Council. India is currently one of the 10 non-permanent members which are elected for two-year terms. The five permanent members are the US, Britain, France, China and Russia.

The Afghan envoy to the UN, Zahir Tanin, who is the chair of the inter-governmental negotiations on UN reforms, has restarted the consultation process with UN member states, people close to developments in New Delhi said, adding that they were “cautiously optimistic” that this round of talks will make headway.

In an interview to PTI, Ban said he was “well aware of the aspiration of the Indian government to serve evenin a bigger role as permanent member of the UNSC... There is generally broad consensus of views that considering such dramatic situations which have been taking place in the international community, the UNSC should be reformed in a more representative, more democratic, transparent way”.

But he admitted that members had not been able to agree on a clear formula that would meet the expectations of all member states.

India’s Security Council tenure, which began in January last year, has been characterized by it exercising a “moderating” role, said one the persons cited above, adding that the country had contributed 100,000 troops to various peacekeeping missions in the last 60 years. India has been active in trying to find ways to counter threats from piracy emanating off the coast of Somalia with the country’s envoys suggesting a UN-led anti-piracy land and sea force, this person said.

Ban’s visit to India will be followed by a trip to Myanmar, the UN said in a statement on its website.

“Myanmar is only at the beginning of its transition. Many challenges lie ahead... Yet I am convinced that we have an unprecedented opportunity to help the country advance toward a better future,” Ban was quoted as telling reporters in New York.

. . . .
That is only in your dream.

First, UNSC won't increase more seats at least in the next five years. I really see there is little possibility in the next decade as well.

Second, UNSC's veto right won't be stripped away at all. There won't be any country that has the power to initiate such a movement to stripe the UNSC's veto right.

Third, I have to say that Brazil and South Africa may have better chance since they are in those large continents that have no seats in SC yet. Germany does have the power and China definitely would support its bid if it can win support in Europe.

Well, for India, there is no way China will support India's bid as long as the border issue between the two countries is not resolved. There is zero possibility that China will support India into UNSC while China's south tibet is not returned yet.

The UNSC doesn't need more permanent members; it doesn't need any and the veto power should be stripped away.

For UN to make sense INDIA should be included in SC and all the veto drama should be done away with ..

I have to say you are just another dreamer.

I really do not see such possibility for the near future.

UN needs one more permanent member with veto power;... India !

. .
Why would India need to beg to a puppet for a ceremonial seat in an imcompetant organization. The UN is just a banner for major powers to hide behind to protect their interest, whether just or unjust.

. . . . .
fourth biggest military power should have a permanent seat in UNSC its just simple logic.........I think china will oppose Japans entry not India's,China do not want India to go openly in USA's camp against china.

.
Out of the G4 nations, India has by far the smallest economy.

So why would you get priority over the others?
Only a noob/idiot will think that the economy is the sole criteria to get a UNSC permanent seat...China is an example...Go compare China's economy when it got the permanent seat.

.
If Economy is the criteria..........What was the size of Chinese economy when it was included in UN SC ??????????????????

The original criteria for being a part of the P5, was to be a major independent power on the winning side of WW2 (the Allies), in 1945.

In 1945 there was no such thing as India, only the British Empire.

If you want to go by the original criteria then you have no chance unless you can go back and change history. As for today, why should India get priority, when ALL of the other G4 nations have stronger economies than India?

.
India should not ask for SC seat, instead it should show the world the SC members are useless ego filled countries who hands out sanctions at their whims and fancies.

P5 would become irrelevant in future as more countries grow economically.

India is already respected around the world, we dont want a seat and be asked to take sides.
