KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Whiteman Air Force Base official says B-2 stealth bombers soon will be undergoing the biggest and most complex update in the plane's history.

The Kansas City Star reports the Pentagon is moving forward with a 10-year, $2 billion effort to modernize the defensive capabilities of the fleet, which is kept at the central Missouri base.

Planned improvements include replacing analog equipment with digital, upgrading antennas and enhancing communications systems and pilot displays.

Keeping the nation's 20 B-2s in top shape is a priority at Whiteman, since the bat-winged bombers are expected to be in use until 2058.

Col. Rob Spalding says some improvements already have been made by technicians at the base to keep the planes current with changing technologies.

B-2 demonstraes the height of US superiortiy in science and technology in general and defence systems in perticular. US is operating B-2 from late 80's and still rest of the world couldn't produce bomber/fighter of same class. No one can come close to US for at least a century to come in these things.

Sure, don't forget to mention their RQ-170 oh wait a minute...

Wait a minute is correct. Iran only got one and by sheer luck at that.

How was it luck?

I dont want to start the nonsense dabate again.
but how would Iranian got to it so fast, it it simply crashed?
they must had been watching it.

You are clearly not a very intelligent person. Either that or you are a 12 yr old trying to make a name for himself in an adult playground.

It would be naive to believe that the US stopped flying UAVs to monitor Iran, at least from the Afghanistan side or from the Iraqi side. It would be naive to believe that no UAVs have trespass Iranian airspace. So if it was not luck that Iran managed to recover one malfunctioning UAV, then why not show US another? By showing I do not mean for the public. Iran can keep everything secret. But we would know -- in secret -- because we keep track of every UAV sortie. We would stop flying them.

It can be argued: What if everything have been happening in secret? That Iran does have more than one or even more than two and that the US have stopped flying UAVs near the Iranian borders for fear of losing more?

In that case, we would never know for sure. But it would also be naive to think that Iran would keep quiet about it. The Iranian leadership is not that mature. Boasting is what they are best at and boasting about more than one American UAVs is inevitable. Plus the American media would secure the fact that we stopped flying UAVs near the Iranian borders. Sooner or later, the reporters will find out, even without leaks. So far, nothing to indicate that we stopped flying UAVs near the Iranian borders.

I just love those planes!! They really deserve to be called state of art aircraft....

I hope they will never be used again but reality doesn't work that way :(

Reason. Its a concept alien to you, no?

GABIT'S reasoning? hahahaha man okay if you say so.

this guy said there was 100% Iran does not have the RQ-170 in another thread using his "reasoning", even when barak obama came out and said Iran give us our UAV back.

I would like to turn people's attention to the paragraph accompanying the B-2's image.

What this mean is that when the B-2 is in ingress and in 'penetration mode', the aircraft will actually perform analysis of any and all seeking radar signals and reconfigure flight control responses and aircraft attitudes to present the lowest possible aspect to the seeking radar (singular) that transmit the strongest signals. If the aircraft need to change course, it will not perform as radical a maneuver as shown, instead if the course change can be made gradual to preserve low radar observability then asymmetric engine thrust will occur to change heading with minimal flight control surface deflections to maintain stability during the change.

The B-2, F-22, and F-35 have this 'threat analysis' capability that is beyond the current ECCM systems deployed today by any country, allies or enemies. So imagine what this upgrade will give this aircraft in terms of current capabilities and additional ones.

I think it is a vanurable target for IR Homing Missiles and SAMs of the current generation.
