Azerbaijan threatens to strike Armenian nuclear power plant
16.07.2020 16:55

Azerbaijan may strike a high-precision missile blow at the Metsamor nuclear power plant in Armenia, the head of the press service of the Ministry of Defense Azerbaijan, Colonel Vagif Dargyakhli, stated.

Azerbaijan will strike the missile blow in the event that Armenia decides to attack strategic objects of Azerbaijan, in particular the Mingechevir reservoir, the official said.

"The Armenian side should not forget that state-of-the-art missile systems in service with our army are capable of striking the Metsamor nuclear power plant with high precision, and this will cause Armenia to suffer a huge tragedy for Armenia," Vagif Dargyakhli said.

He stressed that the terrain, fortification works and the air defenses would not make the attack on the Mingechevir reservoir possible.

Clashes on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border began on July 12 and continued for three days in adjacent areas. The clashes resumed again on July 16. Azerbaijan lost eleven soldiers and one civilian, whereas Armenia lost four soldiers. The parties accuse each other of provocation.

Armenian Foreign Ministry Slams Baku's Threat to Bomb Nuclear Plant as Breaching Int'l Law
19:00 GMT 16.07.2020(updated 19:01 GMT 16.07.2020)

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Azerbaijan's threat to carry out an airstrike on the Armenian-based Metsamor nuclear power plant (NPP) is in violation of international law, the Armenian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday, calling upon Baku to publicly denounce threats like that.

Earlier in the day, Azerbaijani Defense Ministry spokesman Vagif Dargyakhly said that Armenia should beware that Baku has the necessary equipment to conduct a precision strike against the Metsamor NPP.

"The actions threatened by the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan are a flagrant violation of the International Humanitarian Law in general and the First Additional Protocol to Geneva Conventions in particular. Such threats are an explicit demonstration of state terrorism and genocidal intent of Azerbaijan," the Armenian ministry's statement read.
The ministry emphasized that such statements by Azerbaijan were "a menace to all the peoples of the region, including its own people."

"We strongly condemn the nuclear threats voiced by Azerbaijan, which demonstrate absolute absence of responsibility and sound judgement from this particular member of the international community. Azerbaijan must publicly denounce such threats at once," the ministry said.
Clashes broke out in the border area that separates Armenia's Tavush province and Azerbaijan's Tovuz region this past Sunday. The escalation is in its fourth day now, a reasonable distance away from the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, where the two sides have waged war for decades.

Azerbaijan has by far reported 11 troops killed as a result of armed hostilities, while Armenia has reported four fatalities.

Apparently it's near Turkey - quite a few Turks were unhappy to read about this.

The threat of striking Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant came after Armenia threatening to strike the Mingecevir Dam. If the dam is damaged, the entire central Azerbaijan will be flooded. In addition, Armenia has during this conflict tried to target a number of smaller dams near the border.

Striking the Nuclear Power Plant will have severe negative consequences for Turkey, so it is most likely empty talk.

It will have consequences for Azerbaijan too. Aren't there any dams in Armenia?

You can view this as nothing more than public posturing. No sane actor would choose the optics of attacking an operating civilian nuclear installation. Dams be damned.
It is pretty much the quickest way towards getting occupied by a multi-national force.

Same can be said by the way for Armenian threats towards the Mingecevir Dam.

If they were going to do it they would have done it. The fact they spoke means they wont do it
