In just 11 days of global release, Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War will today set a new speed record to $1B at the worldwide box office. The global gross through Friday is $974.5M. The mega-milestone to come once Saturday’s spoils are factored will top the previous 12-day run to $1B of Disney’s own Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Out of 34 films that have reached $1B global in industry history, this is Marvel’s 6th and The Walt Disney Studios’ 17th.

Meanwhile, Joe and Anthony Russo’s assembled heroes helped push The Walt Disney Studios across $3B in global box office for 2018 on Friday. That’s another new speed record. It beats Disney’s own previous benchmark which was set on May 6, 2016. The current 2018 split for the studio is $1,292.4M domestic and $1,727.4M overseas.

For its part, Infinity War‘s cume through Friday is $604.8M at the international box office and $369.7M domestic. After a staggering $640.9M global opening last weekend, itself an all-time record, the Marvel guys and gals continued to whip past milestones all week. On Monday, they crossed $700M worldwide, then $800M on Tuesday and through Thursday had cracked the $900M threshold. Overseas, it took seven days for Iron Man, Thor, Star-Lord, Doctor Strange, Black Widow, et al to get past $500M, and 10 to hit $600M.

Infinity War benefited well from the May Day holiday in many markets earlier this week. The Force Awakens was released in mid-December 2015, playing through the Christmas corridor.

Both films share in that neither needed China to get to the $1B milemarker globally. And given Marvel’s Middle Kingdom track record, expect Infinity War to see a massive opening beginning May 11. We’re hearing overall presales have been robust to put it mildly. IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond told Fox Business earlier this week that China presales in the format are at their highest ever on Infinity War.

As for Disney, its cup runneth over this year with the runaway success of Black Panther and now the global domination of this 19th film in the MCU, among other titles. And just around the corner is Lucasfilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story which will have its world premiere out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival before starting international rollout on May 23.

After that, Dis has The Incredibles 2, Ant-Man And The Wasp, Christopher Robin, The Nutcracker And The Four Realms, Wreck-It Ralph 2 and Mary Poppins Returns on deck before the end of the year.
