Authorities in India-controlled Kashmir foil separatist march to UN office - People's Daily Online February 09, 2010

The authorities in India-controlled Kashmir Monday foiled a separatist march to United Nations office in Srinagar, the region's capital city, by imposing severe restrictions, officials and witnesses said.

Thousands of Indian policemen and paramilitary troopers deployed in the city forced people to stay indoors and did not allowed them to come out. They had blocked roads and placed barricades at several places to check the movement of people.

The moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had given the Monday call for a march to United Nations Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) office in Srinagar.
The authorities had placed Farooq under house arrest since Thursday and taken many other separatists in custody to prevent anti-Indian protests and sabotage the program. The proposed march was aimed at registering the concern against the "human rights violations perpetrated by the Indian troopers".

In wake of the restrictions, Farooq Monday started an online petition protesting the human rights violations in the region and forwarded a copy of it UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

"As the government continues to impose restrictions, it seems that the only way for Kashmiris to express their concern is through the virtual world. Given the fact that I am confined to my house, I have started an e-petition to highlight this issue," reads an email from Mirwaiz inviting people to sign the petition.
Mirwaiz states that delaying of the resolution of the Kashmir dispute will continue to send thousands of innocent victims to graves.

Meanwhile, the restrictions imposed by authorities in the Srinagar entered the fourth day Monday.

Business and shops remained shut and traffic was off the roads in Srinagar for the eight straight day. The reports pouring in from other major Muslim dominated areas of the region said a shutdown was observed.

Situation in city worsened following the killing of a teenager, Wamiq Farooq in police action last Sunday evening. Farooq was hit by a tear smoke shell fired by Indian police. Though police says official held responsible for firing the tear smoke shell negligently has been suspended but people refuse to acknowledge the police action and demand strict punishment.

On Friday, another teenager, Zahid Farooq was shot in chest allegedly by paramilitary troopers with out any provocation.
