The Austrian government passed legislation on Tuesday, outlawing the use of garments that fully cover the face of women, such as the burqa, as well as the distribution of the Holy Qur'an in public.

The provision is part of a larger integration law, work on which was not blocked despite recent instability in the ruling coalition that means parliamentary elections have been pulled ahead a year, to October.

Starting in October, people wearing garments in public that cover a woman's face will be subject to fines of 150 euros (166 dollars).

It is not clear how many people would be affected by the measure. It has received criticism from both political extremes, in some cases for not being tough enough.

Other parts of the legislative package prohibit distributing the Qur'an and require all migrants in Austria to participate in an integration year during which they would learn German and ethics. That measure is targeted at refugees and asylum seekers viewed as having a good chance at remaining in Austria.

Asylum seekers would also be expected to perform unpaid public work. Anyone refusing to do so would lose out on benefits. The proposal is allegedly designed to make migrants better suited for the Austrian labor market.

In Austria, Islam is the second most widely professed religion, practiced by 7 percent of the population or around 600,000 people, according to the Islamic Religious Community.

The country has been spared the kind of extremist attacks suffered by Germany, France and Belgium. But fears and tensions have been growing over the past months, fuelled by anti-migrant campaigns of the popular right-wing Freedom Party (FPO).

France, which has the largest Muslim minority in Europe, estimated at 5 million, in 2010 introduced a ban on full-face niqab and burqa veils in public.

I can understand the year of integration and ethics classes and I can understand the veil ban, both of those are well within the countries rights but unpaid labor and banning distribution of the Qur'an?

If you want to punish criminals or adult male refugees with no family with unpaid labor then go ahead but forcing refugees with families to work for free is just cruel. A lot of them need to feed their families and banning distribution of the Qur'an is just limiting free-speech.

.
Banning a book ? what purpose it will serve anyway ? Freedom my foot .. but still i like Austria :smitten:

.
Banning veils that cover the face is fine.

Banning distribution of Quran?:cheesy:

. . .
I could say it about some countrys banning Bible ... Its not like they banned islam or mosquets ...
Where i live we dont ban bibles..i am only responsible for my country...

Unpaid?how about working for the benefits they receive? So,you see, they will be actually expected to work for the money the state gives them.....terrible, I know...

Benefits do not count as compensation, benefits comes out of tax money and are used by the government to serve the people.

For example if I were to work in a big company in the U.S then that company would be obligated to give me benefits like insurance AND compensation for my work.

Like I said if the refugee is a adult male with no family members to take care of or a person with a criminal record then go ahead but doing it to refugees with families to feed is just cruel.

Tax money are for citizens, refugees are not citizens. It is normal that they should work for free money or other benefits. It s not like it's slave labour, if they refuse to work, they just loose the benefits. BTW, in Romania, the state gives you an allowance monthly if you don't work, not much, true, but even for those money you have to work several hours a week for community service.

So what other books cannot be distributed in public in Austria then?
If the Quran can be banned, so can the Bible.

One very sensible policy of banning face veils is followed by a ludicrous one of
banning a book!
