A Liberal candidate has been sacked for claiming a man who allegedly raped his wife was the "real victim".
Gurpal Singh, contesting the Victorian seat of Scullin, was already in strife for linking same-sex marriage to paedophilia.
The Liberal Party yielded to pressure and dumped Mr Singh on Thursday night after his comments about the alleged rape were revealed.
"Based on new information that has come to light, Mr Gurpal Singh has been asked to resign as the candidate for Scullin," a party spokesman said.
"Mr Singh sincerely apologises for his previous comments and has tendered his resignation."
In a Facebook post from May last year, Mr Singh said he had "no sympathy" for the alleged rape victim and questioned why she stayed with her husband so long.
"It's shameful that a married woman suffering family violence can go to such extent," he said.
"She skimmed her lover, husband and father of her two children for all these years. And now she alleges rape. Was she kept locked all these year?"
"The real victim is the husband."
Until Mr Singh's latest comments emerged, the Liberals stood by their candidate, despite his homophobic remarks made during the campaign against same-sex marriage.
Scott Morrison said on Wednesday the homophobic comments from 2017 had been "dealt with" and Mr Singh would remain.
Last week, the prime minister criticised Bill Shorten for delaying the disendorsement of a Labor candidate who shared a rape joke and other vulgar remarks on social media.
