MUMBAI: Australia’s cricket chief slammed “outrageous” cheating allegations against captain Steve Smith on Wednesday after a controversial incident in the second Test against India.

Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland came out strongly in defence of Smith, who was accused of flouting the rules during Tuesday’s defeat in Bangalore.

India captain Virat Kohli and others said Smith had overstepped the mark by appearing to look for a signal from the dressing-room when weighing whether to appeal his dismissal for lbw.

“I find the allegations questioning the integrity of Steve Smith, the Australian team and the dressing room, outrageous,” said Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland.

“Steve is an outstanding cricketer and person, and role model to many aspiring cricketers and we have every faith that there was no ill-intent in his actions.

“We reject any commentary that suggests our integrity was brought into disrepute or that systemic unfair tactics are used, and stand by Steve and the Australian cricketers who are proudly representing our country.”

The rules forbid players from consulting with anyone off the field about whether to seek a review from the umpires.

After the match, Smith blamed a “brain fade”, suggesting the incident was a one-off. But Kohli insisted “it’s been happening for the last three days, and it has to stop”.

Although no formal complaint has been laid, a source in the Indian board told AFP that the team would press for charges.

Great game of cricket comes to an end in shape of a draw.

Third test between Australia and India was drawn today, thanks to some excellent batting performance in first innings by India (that followed what looked like more then decent score by Australia in first innings) and some extremely well defending on last day by the lower middle order Australian line-up in there second innings. A performance that is now being termed as a "great escape". The match where Australia were looking in control at end of day one ended by Australian lower middle order grinding there way to a well played draw.

Looking forward for the fourth and last match with series drawn at 1-1

PETER Handscomb and Shaun Marsh saved the match for Australia

PETER Handscomb and Shaun Marsh have engineered one of the great saves in Australian Test history to push an all-time epic series to a thrilling decider.

The third Test in Ranchi will go down as a draw, but for an Australian team on the ropes, this felt like the sweetest of victories.

Two down at the start of the day and four down at lunch, the warrior-like 124 run partnership between Marsh and Handscomb which soaked up 232 minutes and 374 balls may well be looked back upon as the stand that created history for Australia in India.

When Marsh finally succumbed for 53 off 197 balls Australia only had 10 overs left to hold on, with Handscomb seeing the fight of his life right out to the end, finishing unbeaten on 72 off 200 balls.

In total Australia survived 100 arduous overs on a surface where a wicket at any point could have sparked a match-ending collapse.

Now one of the most dramatic, venomous and see-sawing series since the 2005 Ashes has been given the spine-tingling finale it deserves, with warring arch-enemies Australia and India locked one-all heading into the fourth and final Test starting on Saturday at the foot of the Himalayas in Dharamsala.

India were charging head-on towards a triumphant win on day five when captain Steve Smith had his off-stump catapulted out of the ground by a rampant Ravi Jadeja half an hour before lunch to leave Australia reeling at 4-63.

The image of Australia’s most reliable and inspirational figure staring down at his flattened castle having not even offered a shot was enough to send any dressing room into a state of panic, particularly given Matt Renshaw had just departed the over before.

But from a point where recent Australian teams would have plummeted off the precipice, unlikely heroes Marsh and Handscomb picked up the pieces and rescued their side with courageous, backs-to-the-wall performances.

The No.1 bowler in world cricket Jadeja was breathing fire but somehow, Marsh and Handscomb extinguished his domineering presence and struck a killer blow to India’s bullet-proof attitude.

Australia finished 6-204, but by the end even if they were bowled out India wouldn’t have had time to chase the 52-run lead Handscomb and Marsh had wrestled back.

Marsh is arguably the most maligned Australian cricketer of the past decade, and not always unfairly so given he has a first-class record that hasn’t reflected his talent.

But on a dusty, dying track in Ranchi with his team at crisis point, Marsh delivered a knock for the ages that ranks above his three Test hundreds when it comes to what it means to his team.

This is why coach Lehmann was so adamant Marsh must be rushed back with a silver bullet as the sub-continental specialist for this tour.

Steve Smith has his off-stump knocked over by Ravi Jadeja.
Not since 2011 against Sri Lanka, when Michael Clarke and Phillip Hughes combined, has an Australian team batted out a final day to save a Test.

Before that, such a gutsy rescue hadn’t happened on the sub-continent for an Australian side since before Handscomb was born, way back in 1989.

But after staring down the barrel of defeat, Marsh and Handscomb have breathed new life into Australia’s extraordinary shot at breaking a 13-year drought on Indian soil.

Labelled by Harbhajan Singh as the worst Australian team to ever tour India, this fighting XI only need a draw in Dharamsala to retain the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

However, Smith and Lehmann are marshalling a fearless side that will go all out for victory.

There were some anxious moments for Marsh and Handscomb along the way before their partnership finally ended with Australia already virtually in the clear 38 runs ahead and time almost out.

Handscomb was dropped by short leg Murali Vijay on six, a sharp grab which could have proved decisive.

Marsh was almost stumped the third ball after tea off Ravi Ashwin, while he and Handscomb both survived DRS appeals on umpire’s call that replays showed were both hitting plenty of the stumps.

Australian coach Lehmann acknowledged the previous night that his top order had squandered any chance of winning the game by failing to go big enough in their first innings after winning the toss – with 550 instead of 450 what was required.

However, all things considered, this was a morale-boosting draw.

When the fall of one wicket could have easily led to a collapse, Australia was hanging on by the skin of their teeth after Smith was rolled by Jadeja.

Coming just three balls after partner Renshaw had been trapped lbw by Ishant Sharma, Australia’s most reliable operator had failed to offer a shot to send shockwaves through an already rattled dressing room.

Smith shouldered arms to a Jadeja ball that pitched just outside leg stump, but didn’t thrust his pad forward with enough conviction to bump the ball away.

That said, it was a gem of a delivery.

It’s the third off-stump Jadeja had knocked over in this innings, as Australia clambered to lunch at 4-83.

Smith and Renshaw started superbly on day five when Australia resumed precariously placed at 2-23.

An hour and a half into the session and Australia were yet to show a weakness, until pace demon Sharma found a way to get inside the head of Renshaw.

Spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja bowls India into a commanding position in the fourth and last test of the series. This came at the back of a great 7th wicket partnership between Jadeja and Saha. Once the butt of all jokes, SIR Ravendra Jadeja have proven to be one key player for the Indian side.

India now need 106 runs to win the series 2-1!

Australia who have shown tremendous character and will to take this series to this point eventually fall victim to the spinning track on Third day of fourth test Dharamsala. They were expected to fall 4-0 or 3-0 in the Indian conditions but fared pretty decent.

KL Rahul slammed his sixth fifty in seven innings while Ajinkya Rahane smashed an unbeaten 27-ball 38 as India ended their dominant season on a high by registering an eight-wicket win over Australia in Dharamsala. (LIVE BLOG)

Thanks to the victory, India also clinched the four-Test series 2-1 at the HPCA stadium on Tuesday. The result also means that India now hold series wins against all Test teams at the same time. (SCORECARD)

The eight-wicket win not only ensured that the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was coming back to India, but it also stamped their season of dominance in which they played 13 Tests and won 10, drawing two and losing only one. For Australia, a chance to win a series in India for the first time after 13 years was thwarted after they collapsed to 137 all out on the third day.

Resuming at 19/0, Rahul looked in great touch while Murali Vijay was struggling to come to grips with a pitch that still had some movement and extra bounce. Vijay survived two close LBW appeals from Josh Hazlewood in the first over of the day but Rahul eased the nerves by hitting a couple of boundaries.

Hazlewood continued to probe away but Australia missed a chance in Pat Cummins’ first over. The pacer hurled a bouncer on the leg side and Vijay let it go. The ball kissed the glove on the way to wicketkeeper Matthew Wade but Australia did not appeal.

However, the bowler had his revenge as he forced Vijay (8) to edge a legcutter to Wade. Australia had a glimmer of hope when they removed Cheteshwar Pujara for 0. The batsman looked for a quick single to point but there was some hesitation, Glenn Maxwell swooped in and scored a direct hit at the bowler’s end.

Ajinkya Rahane, the Indian skipper, came out with an aggressive intent. He got going with two boundaries off Cummins but following the drinks break, Rahane stepped up a gear as he slammed two consecutive sixes off the pacer, one over deep mid wicket and one over deep extra cover.

The partnership went past fifty. Fittingly, Rahul went past his landmark and sealed the victory for India when he flicked Steve O’Keefe to deep mid wicket. The joy in the Indian team sumnmed up the feeling in a season where they have dominated.
