Australia eyes defence business in India

September 09, 2010

New Delhi, Sep 9 – Australia Thursday sought to expand defence ties with India with the signing of a pact between the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the department of trade and economic development of South Australia.

The pact was signed at the Australian High Commission here in the presence of Mike Rann, the premier of South Australia who has brought some of the top defence companies from his province to India.

‘Many of South Australia’s defence companies are eager to work with Indian companies in developing defence products and services for India,’ Rann said after the signing ceremony.

‘They also recognise the important role that CII plays in liaising with both government and industry in India,’ he said.

Several representatives of Australian defence companies accompanied Rann on the visit. These include Codan, manufacturers of high frequency radios used in border patrols; Minelab, maker of mine detectors; Lockheed Martin Australia, maker of over-the-horizon radar; Daronmont, specialising in coastal radar systems; and Prism Defence Systems, manufacturers of helicopter guidance systems for ships.

South Australia is home to over 200 defence companies.

‘As the strategic outlooks of our two Indian Ocean nations converge, and as we expand cooperation under the India-Australia Strategic Partnership, we anticipate more such initiatives will emerge in the years ahead,’ said Australian High Commissioner Peter Varghese.

We shouldn't make it sound like we are desperate for Australian Uranium.

Eventually they will sell it as $ talks.

I heard Australia has good experience in the OTH radar (over-the-horizon radar) technology field its said that Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) can overcome certain stealth characteristics.

We are not desperate for Australian uranium, our nuclear deal with Canada(world largest producer) alone will give us enough uranium to meet our needs.

But then it becomes a matter of principle. They deny us Uranium we deny them market access, that's what the guys meant.

The current government refuses to sell uranium to a country that hasn't sold the nuclear non-prelification treaty.

Over the horizon radar planes/systems are some of the best radars in the world.

Programs change with governments. I am more hopeful of Gilliard's regime.

Lol, You speak as if you are part of the Indian government. You are not, and oru countries are already doing defence deals as the article says.

It's the same government, but a different leader. Nothing will change for the foreseeable future.

Australia is committed to getting rid of all nuclear weapons in the world and is committed to stopping new weapons being created.

May God bless Australia for that. In Pakistans case Our biggest deterrence is Nuclear weapon but i always wished a nuclear free world.:tup:

nobody said about nuclear weapons here...:D we need uranium for Power making:D ..electric power
When did I said you are getting that uranium for Weapon making. I am not paranoid like some of the countries who protest on civil nuclear deal and say Pakistan will make weapons out of it (Like we dont have any :disagree:).

I am Just supporting Australian will of Nuclear weapon free world.

We are not asking Uranium to make weapons.. We have enough uranium deposits to meet that for than a century.
