Australia assures of preventive action against racial attacks
+ - 21:46, September 25, 2009
In the wake of recent allegedly "racial" attacks on Indians in Australia, an Australian official Friday admitted that the country's image has taken a backseat because of those incidents and assured of preventive action.
"Our image has really been affected by incidents of attacks on international students. But I would like to make it abundantly clear that we are doing all our best to protect our international students," visiting John Brumby, premier of Australia's Victoria state which reported the maximum number of racial attacks on Indians, told the media in New Delhi.
Earlier in the day, he met Indian Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal and Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi and assured them that steps would be taken to prevent those incidents in future.
He also said that Australia might introduce jail term for those guilty of carrying out racial attacks.
