ISLAMABAD: All attempts are being made to secure the release of an Indian soldier who was captured by the Pakistan Army at the Line of Control, The Indian Express quoted Home Minister Rajnath Singh as saying on Friday.

While the Indian side maintains the soldier "inadvertently crossed into Pakistan and should be returned as per existing mechanisms", Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations Dr Maleeha Lodhi said he was captured "while trying to enter into Pakistani territory".

Security sources told Dawn.com a 22-year-old Indian soldier by the name of Chandu Babulal Chohan was taken into custody by Pakistani forces.

"All attempts are being made to secure his release," Singh told reporters in the Indian capital after attending a meeting to discuss internal security.

The Indian minister said New Delhi will take up the matter with Islamabad for his early release.

Mystery surrounded the Indian soldier's arrest initially due to a lack of confirmation from official channels in both countries. Taking advantage of this information gap, India maintained that a soldier had accidentally crossed the LoC so it can request his return under existing mechanisms.

“It is confirmed one soldier from 37 Rashtriya Rifles with weapons has inadvertently crossed over to the Pakistan side of the Line of Control,” an Indian army official said in New Delhi.

Avoiding connecting the capture to Thursday firing incident in which two Pakistani soldiers and several Indian soldiers were killed, he said such incidents of people including civilians crossing the frontier by mistake have happened in the past from both sides.

“Pakistan has been informed [of the soldier's crossing] through the DGMO on hotline,” ANI News quoted Indian Army sources as saying.

Reports of the arrest came hours after India claimed to have carried out surgical strikes on "terror launch pads along the LoC". The Pakistani military swiftly rubbished these claims, saying its two soldiers died in cross-border firing by Indian troops.

At least eight Indian soldiers were also killed in a "befitting response" by Pakistani troops, security sources said.

Soaring tensions
The latest in

incident of cross-border firing came as tensions simmer between Pakistan and India over the Kashmir issue.

Last week, India initiated a diplomatic drive to isolate Pakistan after blaming it for the Sept 18 attack on the Uri army camp in IHK which killed 18 soldiers ─ a claim which Pakistan has rejected.

Tensions between the South Asian rivals have been high since an Indian crackdown on dissent in India-held Kashmir following the killing by Indian forces of Burhan Wani, a young separatist leader, in July.

On Wednesday, India pulled out of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) summit scheduled to be held in November in Islamabad. Several other Saarc members followed suit, leading to the postponement of the summit.

"Hmmm so this is what now Supa Puwa is going to do ? Now they have lowered down their tone like a sissy and will talk to us about Chandu Chohan. What do you guys think should Pakistan go as low as India went ? or should we hand over the solider before we spank his black buttocks."

This dawn is a pawn of India. First it released the details of soldier arrested without even getting confirmation from ISPR, now again reporting irresponsibly.

Even if they somehow knew that an India soldier has been arrested, they should have disclosed it. Now India will put all the pressure on Pakistan using international laws to get it back before we get some invaluable information from him.

Don't know when will our media understand.

why don't you guys send another ghatack commando team to rescue him? after the historic infiltration that they did and killed few thousand, I think they can achieve that.... wont you think
