Terror struck at the heart of cricket when masked gunmen attacked the bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Sources within the security establishment had been aware of an imminent attack being planned by Research & Analysis Wing - India’s premier intelligence agency.

“We had been picking up chatter and had received important information from the R&AW terrorists arrested in recent weeks. An attack was imminent. We had prepared for any eventuality and Alhamdolillah we were able to avert a major catastrophe. The security team fought bravely”, said a source on condition of anonymity.

Five cricketers, including Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan captain, and his deputy Kumar Sangakkara, received minor injuries. The attack left five security men dead.

Sports producer Gavin Scovell said security teams responded quickly.

“The guards were brilliant. They weren’t panicking. They were very calm,” Scovell said. “It must have been a terrifying experience, but they handled it well.”

The police said grenades and rocket launchers had been found at the site of the incident.

The attack in Lahore is designed to damage the strong military relations Pakistan shares with Sri Lanka. Pakistan’s military assistance has been key in destroying LTTE in Sri Lanka.

The attack on the Sri Lankan cricketers comes just a day after Sri Lankan state media published photographs and videos of Indian ministers including MDMK chief Vaiko, with LTTE supremo V Prabhakaran.

Discovered at the rebel satellite communication centre in Puthukudiruppu west on Sunday, the photographs show “certain South Indian politicians in LTTE camps in Wanni,” the defence ministry said.

LAHORE: Pakistani security experts on Tuesday defused two car bombs and recovered a stash of weapons after gunmen staged a deadly ambush against the Sri Lankan cricket team, officials said.

One bomb was defused at Liberty Square, where the ambush took place, and another at the nearby Firdus car park.

"We have defused a bomb in a white Hyundai and after some time we got information about a suspect car in the Firdus car park. We also defused the bomb there," police bomb disposal unit inspector Abdul Ghafoor told foreign news agency.

Local sector warden Malik Fayyaz said that grenades, three kilograms of explosives, a pistol and a one-meter detonating cable had been recovered.

I think it’s quite visible who ultimate beneficiary for this attack is. How can we neglect the statements of fundamentalist Hindu organizations that they will carry Mumbai like attacks in Pakistan?

It is interesting isn't it. When Mumbai attacks took place every one in India was pointing fingers on ISI even when the fighting was going on. Now our dear Indian members want proof first.

Double standard.

Well.. lets face the reality!! The Mumbai attackers WERE from Pakistan Unfortunately.

Sad event. Hats off to our elite police force who were protecting the convoy. MashAllah it's quite visible who's professional in dealing with such terrorism. A mere convoy of police was able to fight back against 12 armed gunmen who were probably planning this for months. Seriously, I can't be more proud of Elite force who were overwhelmed by this act yet they managed to defend and laid their lives in order to protect the guests.

Our neighbours should definitely learn a few things or two from this event and our elite police force. As far as pointing the fingers at RAW is concerned, it's too soon to do that. If we start doing that, we'll only lower ourselves to their hideous level, where they pointed a billion fingers at us while the Mumbai carnage was STILL active.

May our Jawaans rest in Peace.

why bring what happened india into discussion??
There is zero similarities between these events.

In Mumbai terrorists made surprise raids on purely civilian centres like hotels, restaurants, railway station & jewish prayer house.

Here in pakistan terrorists attacked a fully fortified convey for sports men whose security is worthy of some head of the state and in current scenario pakistan, the guard would have been more than alert to face such threarts.

So dont make any irrelevent comparison...

India is trying to weaken Pak: Hameed Gul
Updated at: 1140 PST, Tuesday, March 03, 2009

ISLAMABAD: Former chief of Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) Gen(R) Hameed Gul said India is trying to weaken Pakistan.

Commenting on the attack on Sri Lankan team, Gul told Geo News that India wants to declare Pakistan a terrorist state and firing on Sri Lankan team is related to the that conspiracy.

The thing that will hurt most to Pakistani cricket and fans is that the Sri Lanka were the only team that defied everything that was said about touring Pakistan. India and Australia pulled out citing security concerns. Sri Lanka was the one team that believed in Pakistan and that they would be safe and secure.

Today, some of the bravest of the brave gave their lives for the safety and security of Sri Lankan cricket.

In contrast , while the need of the hour is for the world cricket community to stick with the Pakistanis, BCCI has already issued a statement that Pakistan would not be capable of co-hosting the 2011 world cup. Congress party of India has also came out and said that their decision to pull out the Indian tesm touring Pakistan has been justified.

Sad indeed

Well.. lets face the reality!! The Mumbai attackers WERE from Pakistan Unfortunately.

The story doesn’t end at saying that ok its fine those attacks were carried out from Pakistan. We need to find out the actual responsible people for it. Mumbai attacks may be carried out by Pakistanis but who can rule out the possibility of kidnapping and brain washing them by anti Pakistan forces??????
