Attack on Srilankan cricket team in Lahore

Excerpts from Dawn :

Jayawardene felt his foot go numb. A bullet had grazed his ankle.

Tharanga Paranavithana, who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, mumbled something. Sangakkara turned to listen when a bullet zipped past his head and slammed into a seat. Then, shrapnel tore through his shoulder.

Lying next to him, Thilan Samaraweera was shot in the leg and crawled down the aisle to hide his head behind a metal casing for protection, Sangakkara said.

35 bullets ripped through the bus , all the seats had bullet holes in them. The intent was to kill the Sri Lankans, nothing less.

Furthermore both Chris Broad and now , Jawyawardene said that they were 'sitting ducks' and the Pakistani police did not return fire.

The bus stood still for about a minute and a half as the attackers fired at will, the players said. As far as the players could tell, there was no police gunfire at the attackers.

‘They were not under pressure ... nobody was firing at them,’ Jayawardene said.

Sobering words indeed !:)

Bangladesh postpones Pakistan's cricket tour over security concerns3 hours ago

DHAKA, Bangladesh — Pakistan's cricket tour of Bangladesh was postponed at short notice Thursday for security reasons.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board said the decision was made on the advice of the government, and no new dates were announced. The Pakistan team was scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on Saturday for two Twenty20 matches and five one-day internationals.

Bangladesh cricket authorities, which had asked the government to provide security, made the announcement just before it was due to name a squad for the upcoming matches.

Pakistan Cricket Board chief operating officer Salim Altaf said he did not know when the tour could proceed.

"They have informed us that the tour has been postponed," Altaf said.

"But they have not informed us what will be the new dates of the tour."

The postponement comes after Tuesday's terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team in Pakistan, which killed six police officers and a driver as well as injuring seven members of the Sri Lanka touring party.

It was the first indication that Tuesday's attacks could have a broader impact upon the Pakistan team than just the near-term cancellation of hosting international matches.

"No team will even think to come to play in Pakistan after this attack and injuries to their cricketers," former paceman Sarfaz Nawaz said in the wake of the terrorist attacks.

"I am also fearing that other countries will be reluctant to even invite Pakistan for home series in fear that may open the door for such terrorism to come to their country."

Bangladesh too has been caught up in deadly recent political violence, involving border guards and the army, stretching the nation's security capability.

WTF .... what does Jawyawardne and chris expect? Bodyguards when under fire, have to first protect the host and once ensured only then counter attack. The guards in this case first would have needed some time to take up position (remember this took them by surprise) ... this could easily have taken more than a minute. By that time the driver had sped away the bus. We can easily forgive broad and mahela for this emotional outburst .. since this guys would have been under stress!! ... for them the one minute would have seemed eternity.

It would be wise if we don't invite any team who so ever to Pakistan until we solve the 3/3 incident and make an example out of those responsible for this carnage. If God for bid any team member would have gotten killed, it would have been disastrous for the already tarnished image of the country. Let time pass, time is a great healer, also for now all eyes are waiting to see the out come of the investigation and culprits getting punished. BD imo has made the right decision not to come, we too for now should avoid inviting any more teams to tour Pakistan.

Pak rules out India's hand in Lahore attack

USUAL SUSPECT: Pak's Interior Ministry chief said the attack on Lankans could be the work of al-Qaeda.

New Delhi: Pakistan's Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik on Thursday ruled out India's involvement in attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore.
Malik said the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers could be the work of al-Qaeda.
Interior Ministry sources also said the police have arrested four key suspects in connection with the attack on the Sri Lankan players on Tuesday in Lahore.
"The investigation is going. We are at the moment in an unfortunate situation in Punjab province where this incident took place. There have been large-scale rounding up of people and four of those we believe are involved in the attack. So as far as they are concerned we are catching up with them and that is a good sign," said Pakistani Ambassador to United Nations Abdullah Hussain Haroon.
Almost 300 people, including some Afghanis, have also been detained in connection with the attack in which five security personnel and two other people were killed.
There are reports that the attackers might have wanted to hijack the Sri Lankan team bus, to demand the release of arrested Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi.
Lakhvi has been detained by Pakistani authorities in connection with the Mumbai terror attacks.
But police say it is too early to say whether the attackers wanted to hold the team hostage.
Initial investigations suggest that they only wanted to attack the team. On Wednesday night Lahore police released sketches of four of the men who attacked the Sri Lankan cricketers.
The police are also scanning hospitals in and around Lahore as they believe that one or more of the terrorists were injured during the shootout.
CCTV footage available show the gunmen were easily able to carry out the attacks, raising serious questions on security.

I sincerely hope that our government doesn't f- this up and makes a clear case out of this.

Brother, please, a country of India's size and population, imagine all the news stations, channels, papers, media, everything.
Alot of these stations will always try to spread certain propaganda or information which appeals to people and especially their own people.
You should not bother with reading their information, it is highly unlikely and quite awkward that Indian news sources have full details on it while Pakistan is conducting investigation on this as we speak, perhaps there was a foreign hand? I don't know, patience is a healer, and we must wait and we shouldn't allow us to be screwed over by the rest of the world, we must deal with this issue accordingly and punish those who planned and carried it out, it's as simple as that.

Guys i have seen indian media reporting after Mumbai carnage. Never seen such a lowest standard of coverage in my life. Right from the start blame ISI and Pak govt and making video dramas etc etc....Indian media is more powerful then govt...they can say crow is white, masses will believe it..

I know EXACTLY what you mean, trust me I do.
It's all drama, and emotions, it's hilarious and unprofessional at the same times and it makes you mad because you know that most of the times, you and your country are at the receiving end of it.

DAWN.COM | Pakistan | Investigators see LeT footprints in Lahore attack

ISLAMABAD: Investigators are zeroing in on the footprints of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), according to preliminary investigations by the Joint Investigation Team probing Tuesday’s attack on Sri Lankan cricketers at Lahore’s Liberty Chowk.

Sketchy details of the initial probe suggest that a group of headstrong Lashkar activists, who went underground and remained in hiding in Rawalpindi after the crackdown on Lashkar and Jamaatud Dawa in December, had acted on their own and carried out the attack.

Although officials would not confirm the involvement of Lashkar, they categorically ruled out the possibility of involvement of the Indian spy agency RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) or the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as no evidence has been found so far pointing in their direction.

At least eight people, six policemen among them, were killed after 12 gunmen attacked the bus carrying Sri Lankan cricketers to Qadhafi Stadium.

The attack has killed hopes of any international sports events in Pakistan for months, if not years, and seriously damaged Pakistan’s reputation to host any international sporting event, including the 2011 Cricket World Cup.

The prime minister’s adviser on interior, Rehman Malik, refused to comment on the investigations when asked.

‘At this moment I can only say that investigations into the Lahore attack are going in the right direction. We have also involved the National Database Registration Authority (Nadra) to determine the identity of the attackers,’ he told Dawn.

Interestingly, officials working at Nadra told Dawn that they had no facility to match the sketches with the database. ‘It is a very expensive technology and we do not have it here. So Nadra cannot do anything in this regard,’ a top official of Nadra said.

But asked specifically about the involvement of Lashkar in the Lahore attack, Mr Malik said he could not reveal anything at the moment. ‘The preliminary report will be finalised by Friday. At this moment I can only say that reports regarding the involvement of LeT are speculation,’ he added.

Later he told reporters in Parliament that al Qaeda could be involved in the attack. He also said so far investigations had not yet found any Indian connection.

He told journalists that the involvement of India’s Raw had not been proved so far. But, he added, the final answer could only be given once the investigations were completed.

Mr Malik claimed that investigators had not found any link between the attackers and Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, a key Pakistani suspect in the Mumbai attacks and the alleged trainer/handler of the suicide squad that wreaked havoc in India’s commercial hub in November last year.

But he refused to share details with media of the arrests made by the law enforcement agencies so far.

The investigators involved in the probe believe that the attackers got their commando training in the camp of Lashkar’s operational commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi as their modus operandi had similarities with the Mumbai attackers.

Lakhvi was detained by authorities on suspicion of involvement in the Mumbai terror attacks. He was picked up from his camp in Muzaffarabad on Dec 10 last year.

Investigators believed that one of the attackers had assured the chief suspect in Mumbai terror attacks that his followers would take revenge against Pakistani authorities for his arrest and subsequent trial.

The authorities have also approached Jamaatud Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, who is currently under detention at his Johar Town residence in Lahore, to help authorities in tracking down the attackers.

^^^^I think some people here still won't believe their lying eyes.
