What's new

Atomic Tech. was not of Pakistan, but it was my Technology, I gave it for free: Dr. Q

yeah but aq was the key element.., every thing is a team work, but the leader decides and knows more than anyone combined..

aq khan was regarded and honored like no other scientist and that does point on the reality..

AQ Khan provided the technology for enriching uranium after Pakistan's failed attempt to get the French reprocessing plant. This change meant gearing the rest of the program from a plutonium based weapon to a uranium based design. I could go into further details, but there is no need for that.

As a nation, we tend towards cultish levels of hero worship and thus lurch from eventual disappointment to eventual disappointment, and AQ Khan's (not to belittle his role) adulation was in large part a result of that.

However, the fact that he remained in the limelight while the rest of the teams remained relatively obscure, had several political advantages that were evident later on. :)

Agree...

If I slap a honest & sincere person on face without a reason,, 2nd time I accuse him of a crime,,, 3rd time I talk bad of him to others... How long can one hold his anger & frustration...

Dr.Qadir is such a nice person that he sacrificed his freedom for the country when he started the program & then again he sacrificed when he took all the crimes of fauji-gernails on him alone... don't the ba$tards remember tears in his eyes when he was reading that prewritten statement given to him...

Only a stupid would believe that he sold secrets to other countries,,, when he is one of the most guarded person in pakistan... Army told him to do so... & he did NOT give out any secrets other than giving out the contact #s of the suppliers who could provide the needed materials... He has said it many times...

One more thing one should remember is that he's been thru a lots of psychological & physical traumas... Don't forget his cancer for which he underwent chemotherapy after surgery... all this added to his age afctor... What if he uttered few words that might apparantly sound unfair...

& to an extent he is right .... all who harp about Samar Mubarik mand etc & that others contributed & that he wasn't alone blah blah... should think again... There were lots of relevant experts in Pakistan before Dr.Qadir... why couldn't they do anything...????? Because they did NOT have the required design details... that's what Dr.Kadir brought with him & so he is the only one who can be attributed the start of the whole program to... None of ur Samar Mubarik & Co. would have been able to come up with required design parameters & suppliers lists...

Isn't he 'father of Pakistan's nuclear tech'. Whatever he has done to Pak is not comparable to what he's doing right now.

and u r admitting he indeed provided the technology, the question is, if he was not the top hand, then how on earth one guy just transfered the technology to n korea and iran???

The relevant experts were following a plutonium based design because it was thought that the reprocessing plant would be coming.

Once that deal fell through, the whole program had to be re-organized towards a uranium based weapon.

Dr, Khan did not design the weapon. He did provide the schemata for high speed gas centrifuges for enriching uranium hexaflouride gas, and I presume that this is the "design" that you are referring to.

The suppliers were located and financed through a myriad of discreet arrangements with several other partners.

I have no doubt that even without Dr. Khan's important contribution, the program would have succeeded, albeit with a longer time table.

He provided the technology to Pakistan is what I meant.

Swiss man secretly helped CIA in nuclear sting
keyimg20090122_10232952_0.jpg

A Swiss man suspected of passing on nuclear secrets says he tipped off American spies with information that led to the fall of Libya's atomic weapons programme.
Speaking publicly for the first time since his release from prison, Urs Tinner said he told the Central Intelligence Agency in 2003 that Libya was about to receive equipment needed to make an atomic bomb.

Agents at a shipyard in Italy shortly afterward seized centrifuges bound for the African country. The bust eventually forced Libyan authorities to admit to having a clandestine nuclear programme, which they then ended.

Though the CIA has not commented on the case, a documentary about the affair aired on Swiss public television on Thursday evening and shed new light on exactly how Tinner claims he was involved.

The film coincided with the release of a federal report that accused the Swiss cabinet of mishandling the matter and destroying evidence in the Tinner case including detailed designs for a nuclear warhead.

Urs Tinner, his brother Marco and father, Friedrich were arrested starting in 2004 by Swiss authorities on suspicion of smuggling nuclear secrets. Friedrich Tinner was released in 2006, followed by Urs in December 2008. Neither was ever charged.

Marco Tinner, in custody since September 2005, was released on Friday after posting bail of SFr100,000 ($88,260).

Spies in Switzerland
According to the documentary called The Spy from the Rhine Valley, the Tinners were friends with Abdul Qadeer Khan, the founder of Pakistan's nuclear programme and head of a black market network that supplied Iran and Libya with weapons parts.

Khan, who called the Tinners "an honest Swiss family", stayed at their house.

The Tinners are engineers who deal in centrifuges. Authorities suspected them of contributing to Khan's network, which Khan denied in the documentary. Khan's system was disrupted in 2003 after the centrifuges bound for Libya were seized.

The report produced by a parliamentary supervisory committee states that on June 21, 2003, six CIA agents did in fact approach Marco Tinner with what they said was a search warrant.

It was unclear what, if anything, they found, but the agents could have had access to potentially sensitive data.

"At that time the agents got Marco Tinner to cooperate with the American authorities," the report states.

Sabotaged
In the documentary, Urs Tinner says he sabotaged equipment that he knew was bound for secret uranium enrichment programmes so it would malfunction on the first use. He doesn't say which country had ordered the parts.

Urs Tinner was arrested in 2004 in Germany before being brought back to Switzerland in 2005. The nuclear smuggling case never went to trial and the media have long speculated that the Tinners were spying for the CIA – a punishable offence in Switzerland – and that Washington put pressure on Bern to destroy evidence in the case.

Former Justice Minister Christoph Blocher told the documentary filmmakers that he travelled to Washington in 2007, three years after the Tinners' arrest, to discuss the matter with the Americans.

Blocher said the Americans wanted thousands of case files but he refused to hand them over. The Swiss cabinet later decided to destroy them after members learned they held plans for nuclear warheads.

A blast of criticism
A parliamentary delegation on Thursday strongly criticized the cabinet's decision to do that, saying it overreacted as there was no immediate threat to Switzerland's security. All possibility of determining guilt or innocence in the case vanished with the destroyed evidence.

The report was particularly critical of Blocher for not having informed the cabinet quickly enough about the scope of what the dossier contained.

Only the rightwing Swiss People's Party, of which Blocher is a member, has defended the move to destroy the files.

"What's essential is that Switzerland's security and sovereignty, as well as international law in regard to nuclear non-proliferation, were respected," it said.

Other parties were less forgiving.

The centre-left Social Democratic Party has welcomed the publication of the report which showed that the destruction of the documents was "neither proportionate nor reasonable".

In a similar vein both the centre-right Christian Democrats and the Radical Party pointed similar shortcomings.

"It should not have been possible, in Switzerland, that these documents could be destroyed on the basis that they couldn't be kept secret and secure," the Christian Democratic Party said.

"We have to see to it that the separation of powers is strictly respected," said the Radical Party, suggesting new measures might be needed to keep cabinet powers in check.

Cabinet members have not responded to the report, saying they wanted to read it in full first.

swissinfo with agencies

IN BRIEF
In 2004 the International Atomic Energy Agency supplied the Swiss authorities with a list of two companies and 15 individuals suspected of dealing in nuclear material with Iran and Libya.

Swiss engineer Urs Tinner, who is suspected of helping Libya obtain nuclear weapons technology, was arrested in Germany in October 2004. He was extradited to Switzerland in 2005.

His father Friedrich and brother Marco were also arrested by the Swiss authorities on suspicion of breaking the law on war materials by illegally exporting nuclear bomb-making equipment to Libya.

its a reaction for the media is trying to question his dedication, and hard work, surely if he was not that important, why he was given such respect and honors which other couldnt get

He of course is an important man. Nuclear bomb for Pakistan wouldn't have been possible without him. But he didn't stop with helping Pakistan. This man has made the world more unstable.

Looking at the long list of sacrifices he made for the country, and the pride and security he gave to Pakistan by developing Nuclear weapons and technology...such little fumbles of his are of no significance.
He was a Hero, and will remain a national Hero.

There is something strange to Nuclear technology..Since the beginning, most high profile scientists have done something weird..The inventor of the First Atomic bomb committed suicide.Julius and Ethel Rosenberg passed on full nuclear tech to soviet union, and remained defiant of their actions, saying they done nothing wrong. The list goes on.

A technology which has the capability of annihilating the planet, and at the same time can be the soul source of electricity for the whole world for thousands of years, may have adverse psychological effects on the individuals involved...A.Q Khan may not be different...Just my theory.

come on be reasonable. One man can not do that. Pakistan army had a solid grip on nuclear programme. Both sharif and benazir were not allowed in the facilities. It was done either directly by government or most probably army. But Musharaf thought one man will save Pakistan which was a wrong decision. We did not sign NPT so the result would have been the same if we had simply denied or taken a collective blame.

I dont know why is it so difficult to understand.

Prewritten statement is just a lie that he speaks of if what he said was not true then why did he said it on first place?
What would have happened had he refused to give that statement tell me would Pakistan have been sanctioned? attacked? or he would have been tortured ?

If all that was a lie being a national hero he should have stood for truth.

Only a stupid would believe that he sold secrets to other countries,,, when he is one of the most guarded person in pakistan.
This too is not true,Can a heavily guarded man be continuously spied of and kept in check by CIA and neither the ISI nor the "Evil Generals";) or the Army have no clue about it,seriously this is laughable.
One more thing one should remember is that he's been thru a lots of psychological & physical traumas... Don't forget his cancer for which he underwent chemotherapy after surgery... all this added to his age afctor... What if he uttered few words that might apparantly sound unfair...
True I think because of these traumas he has become mentally unsound for giving a TV interview.

Qadir was metallurgist he knew nothing about Nuclear Physics and there was is nothing he knew more then Dr Samad the hardworking PAEC head, all he did was to steal centrifuges from Europe, which was a part of chain of operations needed to make nuke not the whole of Nuke.

And FYI Dr Samad had been working on the program parallel to him and the 98 Nuke test was conducted by PAEC not KRL moreover Pakistan's nuclear program also has the contribution of Dr Abdus Salam and many other unnamed and unknown scientists who worked hard to give us Nuke. The "ONLY QADIR" brigade is just trying deprive of credit to many who deserve it for their selfless work.

The Qadir rose to fame in Zia's Era who Just wanted people to speak against Bhutto and he did just that according to "Defence Journal".

We must stop worshiping him like Idol and think rationally he's just a man who stole Centrifuges for us,thank you very much Qadir!
and then sold them,Damn you Qadir!!!!! for embarrassing us in front of whole world.

Dr AQ is such a sensitive personality. His words can be twisted all around the world and he is not taking care of how he uses them. He has already done enough damage to Pakistan when he admitted that he sold the secrets. Why the hell he said that for anyway?

Please consider the possibility that if he admits he is the one who sold the technology illicitly, nobody needs to dig any further. Imagine that! :)
