ATC declares Altaf Hussain an absconder

KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court on Saturday declared Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain an absconder in a hate speech case.


The case was registered by Sindh Rangers spokesman Col Tahir Mehmood in March this year after a fiery telephonic speech of Altaf Hussain to his workers in Karachi from London. Col Tahir Mehmood maintained that following a raid on MQM Headquarters, Altaf – in a TV interview – threatened members of the paramilitary force who were involved in the operation, a charge Altaf’s party denies. Civil Line Police on Saturday presented a challan in the court, saying that the accused cannot be arrested as he was living abroad. In its challan, police pleaded that the accused be declared an absconder under Section 87/88 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The court approved the police request, declaring Altaf an absconder. The latest development comes after the court concluded a hearing of the case registered earlier against the MQM chief.
