At least 55 killed in Delhi building collapse

Nov 16 (Reuters) - At least 55 people were killed and 75 injured after a multi-storey building collapsed in east Delhi late on Monday, local media said.

Local television channels said rescue operations as some people were still feared to trapped in the debris.

Delhi's chief minister Sheila Dixit blamed the building's faulty construction for the tragedy.

"This is the carelessness of the builder...I am not even sure if it is an authorised or unauthorised building," she said. (Reporting by Rajesh Kumar Singh)

Greedy builders + no building code + improper maintenance + ignorant people = deadly disaster.

Few days ago same kind of Incident happened in our locality too in Mumbai - a 3 storeyed building collapsed , 22 dead

the govt authority should now take immediate action to rebuild such structures

first kick the officials who gave permission to build without norms then you dont see any thing falling

It has been explained that the building was built illegally that is, it was not sanctioned by the concerned authority to be a five storyed building.

Another reason it seems that this was built in a silt area nearby Yamuna river which means the land was not fit for construction of such a building.

Finally utter disregard of rules and corruption. What a shame that this happened in our Capital !!!!

This area is illegal colony where people have illegally grabed govt. land and river side area to build homes.

It was regularized by politicians due to the fact that about a million of people lives there.

This was a tragedy waiting to happen.

This building is near the river Yamuna and falls under the flood catchment area. Govt. have build a wall to stop water from entering these areas but in Mansoon season or flood situations water emerges from ground and get accumulated in the basements of the buildings.

Water accumulated in the basement for many days + use of cheap quality material + building without any pillar are the reason for collapse.

Nah, it was an illegal building that had been 'regularised' for political and monetary gain, and then they built more floors. The monsoon weakened the foundation, and one fine day a whole bunch of people died.

It was close to the banks of the Yamuna river, that made it worse. I expect more collapses like this.
