KARACHI: At least 13 people were reported dead and 60 others were injured in a blast outside a religious centre in Swat, DawnNews reported on Thursday.

The nature of the blast, which targeted a weekly religious congregation on Takhtaban road in north-western town, remained unknown, according to police officials.

Some reports said that blast occurred when a gas cylinder burst on the road outside the religious centre; however, officials were unable to confirm the cause.

SWAT: At least 19 people were killed and 47 injured in a blast in the Mingora city of Swat district on Thursday, confirmed officials at Saidu Sharif Hospital.

The explosion took place at the main Tableeghi Markaz (preaching centre) located on the Takht Band Road.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) spokesperson and police termed the blast as a gas cylinder explosion.

According to eyewitnesses, people were getting ready for their preaching session when a gas cylinder in the kitchen of the Markaz exploded.

“After the explosion, people started running frantically while some ran to the spot of the explosion to rush the injured to the hospital,” a person told The Express Tribune.

Rahman Ali, a medical practitioner in Saidu Group of Hospitals, said that more than 50 injured people were brought to the hospital where 10 critically injured succumbed to their injuries.

If you would visit any of the areas where gas is not present and cylinders are used, you would get an idea about the appalling safety standard.

Yup it was. Due to extreme cold weather these religious centers usually have big and dozens of such cylinders.

Confirmed to be an IED. That's the 2nd one today..

While initial reports were unable to confirm the nature of the blast, Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) official Qayyum Shah confirmed that a bomb, in the shape of an improvised explosive device, was planted inside the centre.
