Assam’s citizenship list: A ticking ‘time bomb’ for Indo-Bangla ties

You people are anticipating too much. I dont think a single person will be left out in the NRC. As far as my knowledge everyone of them submitted their documents.
From what I have seen in a few video, those muslim who do not have their name in the current list, have already one or more member of their family name in that list. There are cases where father was declared citizen while son was not, or vise versa, one spouse declared citizen, other were not. These left out person will get their card easily it seems due to familial factor. But I think, those highly xenophobic assami will still find some way to declare several lakhs of muslim non-citizen and will create a nasty situation.

Your all comments seem to have a presumption that BD is ready to take foreigners at any moment because their govt termed them illegal BDeshi. Bangladesh will not take them in, neither will BD provide them citizenship right or any state rights. Why tf would BD take in illegal Indians without providing any proof of them being illegal Bangladeshis?

Why are Bdshians running away from BD? Why don't they go back to BD? I thought BD was some scandinavian country like you guys usually show the rosy picture of BD :enjoy::lol:

Mamata warns BJP: Driving out Bengalis from Assam will have serious consequences

'Don't divide and rule. If there is trouble in Assam, there will be trouble in Bengal.'

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee warned of serious consequences if the central government goes ahead with the plan to drive out Bengalis from Assam.

Addressing a public rally at Amodpur in Birbhum district of West Bengal on Wednesday, the Trinamool Congress leader warned that ethnic problems in Assam would invariably have effects in West Bengal.

Comparing the process of making National Citizen’s Register (NCR) in Assam as “Bangalee Hatao” movement, the one that took place in the 1960s, the eminent politician warned the central government saying: “Don’t play with fire.”

“Don’t divide and rule. If there is trouble in Assam, there will be trouble in Bengal. We are neighbouring states,” she added.

“People from Assam and Kerala are also staying in Bengal. So the Bengalis staying in Assam should also be taken care of. This is a free country. But in the name of citizenship register, the BJP is trying to victimise people,” Mamata said further.

The first draft of the NRC has listed 19 million people out of the 32.9 million applicants as legal Indian citizens, in a massive exercise aimed at identifying illegal immigrants in the state that borders Bangladesh.

Anyone living in Assam has been asked to prove that their forebears appeared either in the state’s only previous register of citizens, compiled in 1951, or on any electoral roll published before March 1971 to be eligible for citizenship.

The biggest beneficiary of the NRC will be the bengali muslims of Assam. This will only strengthen their status in Assam. Besides it proves that there is no migration from BD. This will also reduce the suspicion of being babgladeshi when they go to south india for work. I seen a report where coffee plantation are facing shortage of worker as they all left for Assam for NRC registration.

Star Online Report
Two separate FIRs have been filed against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in north eastern Indian state of Assam for describing the citizenship verification exercise in the state as a “conspiracy” to drive out Bangla-speaking population from Assam.
The BJP-led government in Assam condemned Mamata’s statement alleging it amounted contempt of the Supreme Court under whose monitoring the verification exercise is being carried out to update the 1951 National Register of Citizens.

Social activist Kailash Sharma and advocate Tailendra Nath Das filed two separate FIRs (First Information Report) with the Assam police yesterday accusing Mamata of making inflammatory remarks and promoting hostility between communities over the updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

Das, who referred to a news item published in a local daily that mentioned the CM’s speech on Wednesday, and said in his FIR that Mamata’s remarks also caused contempt of the Supreme Court and requested for registration of a case under Section 153(A) of the Indian Penal Code.

Addressing a public meeting in Birbhum district of West Bengal on Wednesday, the West Bengal Chief Minister had reportedly termed the citizenship verification exercise in Assam as an attempt to oust Bangla-speaking people from Assam and warned the BJP-led government of Assam not to play with fire.

Assam’s Industries Minister and the state government’s spokesman Chandra Mohan Patowary reacted sharply to Mamata’s remarks and told the media in Guwahati yesterday that “the people of Assam have cooperated and supported the NRC updation cutting across caste, creed, language and religion”.

“All political parties of the state have also extended full support to the exercise, and so have all student bodies and socio-cultural organisations. But Mamata Banerjee’s remarks, made at a public meeting at Birbhum in West Bengal on Wednesday have not only sounded provocative but also insulting to the entire people of Assam,” he added.

Mamata’s statement was “baseless and politically motivated and was intended at foment trouble” in Assam, Patowary charged.

“The government of Assam is committed to providing security to lives and property of all inhabitants of the state irrespective of caste, creed, language and religion. We urge the West Bengal Chief Minister to refrain from making provocative statements,” the Assam minister said.

Meanwhile, All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), which had spearheaded a violent agitation against “illegal migrants” in Assam in 1960s and 70s, has appealed to the Supreme Court to take cognisance of Mamata’s utterances and initiate action against her.

“The West Bengal CM’s statement is extremely unfortunate. The entire exercise is being carried out under the directive and monitoring of the Supreme Court. She is trying to drive a wedge between communities living peacefully in Assam by making unfounded utterances,” AASU general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi said.

The Assam unit of BJP urged the Registrar General of India and the officials involved in citizenship verification exercise to file a case against Mamata in the Supreme Court.

“Banerjee made the comment to lure Bengali-speaking people towards Trinamool Congress because BJP is gaining ground in her state. Bangalees in Assam have had no issues with NRC but she is playing a dangerous game even if it means contempt of court,” state BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass said.

All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) also lashed out at Banerjee. “At a time when the situation in Assam is sensitive on the citizenship issue, such a statement from Mamata Di is uncalled for and condemnable. The NRC is being prepared under the guidance and supervision of the Supreme Court and we have full faith in the government machinery and hope for an error-free NRC with the names of all genuine citizens,” AIUDF chief Maulana Badruddin Ahmed said.

Congress lawmaker Ripun Bora shot off a letter to the Registrar General of India alleging “deliberate negligence” on the part of NRC authorities in verifying documents in 208 NRC Sewa Kendras across 13 districts of Assam. Most of these districts like Barpeta, Dhubri, Goalpara, Nagaon, Karimganj and Hailakandi are Muslim-dominated

There will be trouble in all of the seven sister states. Bangladesh intelligence will make sure of it. Assam is just kicking the hornets nest

These indian ethnic cleansing actions vindicate policy Bangladesh taken post 1975 until awami league came to power was correct one. What awami league did was destroyed Bangladesh security and political position against indian design. Now Bangladesh facing disaster because of awami league.

Lot of these "Bengali Muslims" in Assam aren't even Bengali per se. The Barak valley is Sylheti speaking and has always been majority Bengali. People in Goalpara and Kamrup, whether be Muslims or Hindus speak in the same dialect, and these dialects are hitherto indistinguishable from North Bengal's own dialects. Hence, "Bengalis" in Assam are pretty much indistinguishable by looks/language from caste Assamese (except the Barak valley in terms of language), only tribal assimilated Assamese or tribal populations there like Bodos in general look/sound different.

This guy does not seems like too much worried.

benglardash population is about to grow by 13 million

If any of that happens

let me clear some confusions for you.
1. Goalpara dialect is assamese. Kamrupia dialect is assamese. People speaking this dialect are
assamese
. Nobody considers them Bengali.
2. Bengali people speak Bengali in all different varities of dialect like sylheti and hence are called Bengali.
3. Indians of all kind including bengalis can live in all part of N.E unless otherwise prohibited by constitution
of India.
4. NRC is to identify non-Indians from the Indians, who may have settled in NE after 1971 and is not a
targeted program against bengolis-muslims-whatever you people (and some CM of other state) are
cooking up in their mind. It is not like that we will spare the Burmese, Nepalese or any other people.

Caste system is very weak here and inter caste (Intra-community) marriage is also very common.
Bengalis prefer to marry within themselves and assamese-bengali marriage is relatively uncommon because of cultural difference, unlike what you said.
