Assam police on Saturday arrested 14 people for alleged social media posts supporting the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the arrests were made on the radar of the Assam Police’s Cyber Cell. They have been booked under various sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, the IT Act and CrPC.
According to a senior police official, “A total of 14 people arrested so far in 11 districts of Assam, which includes one MBBS student of Hailakandi, studying in Tezpur Medical college, and two others. While some directly supported Taliban, some of them criticised India and the national media for not supporting Taliban. This could create communal tensions.”
Police taking strict legal action against pro-Taliban remarks:
Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General Violet Baruah said that the Assam Police is taking strict legal action against pro-Taliban remarks on social media which cause threat to national security. On the other hand, she tweeted, “We’re registering criminal cases against such persons. Please inform the police if any such thing comes to your notice.”
At the same time, Police apprehended two people each from Kamrup, Dhubri, and Barpeta districts. One person each arrested in Darrang, Cachar, Hailakandi, South Salmara, Hojai and Goalpara districts.
